Remarkable Movements from the Past
11th February is celebrated as the International Day of Women and Girls
in Science by a resolution passed by the United Nations General
Assembly on 22 December, 2015.The day recognizes the critical role that
women and girls play in science and technology.The day's purpose is to
promote full and equal access to women and girls for participation in
science. The theme of 2022 is “Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion: Water
Unites Us”

Some dignitaries born/passed away on this day (Past –Present)

Thomas Alva Edison born on February 11, 1847 was an American


inventor and businessman who has been described as America's greatest
inventor. He developed many devices in fields such as electric power
generation, mass communication, sound recording, and motion pictures.
These inventions, which include the phonograph, the motion picture camera,
and early versions of the electric light bulb, have had a widespread impact
on the modern industrialized world.

Jamnalal Bajaj was an Indian industrialist who founded the Bajaj


Group of companies in the 1920s, and the group now has 24 companies.
During the First World War, the British government appeased and
honoured native tradesmen, soliciting funds. They appointed Jamnalal an
honorary magistrate. Several institutions in India bear his name, including
the Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies. He breathed his last on
11 February 1942.

Sidney Sheldon born on February 11, 1917 was an American writer,


director and producer. Sheldon was prominent in the 1930s, first working on
Broadway plays and then in motion pictures, After turning 50, he began
writing best-selling suspense novels, such as Master of the Game and Rage
of Angels (1980). His 18 novels have sold over 300 million copies in 51
languages.

Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed was an Indian lawyer and politician who


served as the fifth President of India from 1974 to 1977. A medical college,
Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College has been named after him at Barpeta
Assam. He breathed his last on 11 February 1977.
