Remarkable Movements from the Past
February 22 is celebrated as World Scout Day when millions of Scouts
from all over the world gather at local, national, and international levels
to celebrate the Founder's Day and reaffirm the scout Promise. This day
marks the birthday of Lord Baden-Powell, the pioneer of Scouting.

Indian textile industry is one of the largest Industries in the Indian


economy. India's first textile mill, the Bombay Spinning and Weaving
Mill, was set up on February 22, 1854by Cowasji Nanabhai Davar.

In 1946, Dr Selman Abraham Waksman, a Russian Empire-born


Jewish-American inventor, biochemist and microbiologist announced his
discovery of the antibiotic streptomycin, the first specific antibiotic
effective against tuberculosis. In 1943, he had isolated streptomycin from
a mold he had known and studied early in his life. For this work, he was
awarded the 1952 Nobel Prize.

Abul Kalam Ghulam Azad was an Indian scholar, Islamic
theologian, independence activist, and a senior leader of the Indian National
Congress during the Indian independence movement. Following India's
independence, he became the First Minister of Education in the Indian
government. He is commonly remembered as Maulana Azad. His
contribution to establishing the education foundation in India is recognised
by celebrating his birthday as National Education Day across India. He
breathed his last on 22 February 1958.

Kasturbai "Kasturba" Mohandas Gandhi was an Indian political


activist and a leader in the struggle for civil rights and independence from
British rule in India.. She married Mohandas Gandhi in 1883. She breathed
her last on 22 February 1944.

George Washington born on February 22, 1732 was an American


political leader, military general, statesman, and Founding Father who
served as the first president of the United States . He presided at the
Constitutional Convention of 1787, which established the U.S. Constitution
and a federal government. Washington has been called the "Father of His
Country" for his manifold leadership in the formative days of the new
nation.
