Forces and

energy
3.1: Gravity, weight and mass
Gravity
What is gravity?

If you drop a ball, why it falls down to the

ground and won’t flow in the air?

Gravity
Gravity is like a giant magnet that locates in the bottom of
Earth.

It attracts every
object that has a
mass toward the
center of Earth
Gravity
Is found around any object with mass; causes weight and a
force of attraction on other masses.

Earth gravity is an example

of a non-contact force.
Q/ what is a non-contact force?
Weight
Is the force of gravity on an object, measured in Newton
(N).

Weight varies according

to location because it
depends on gravitational
force.
Mass
Mass is a property of matter and can be measured by
kilogram (kg).

Mass does not change according to location.

The contact force
The force from a surface on an object that is equal or
opposite to the weight of the object.

For every action, there is a reaction.

In the contact force the two objects have to touch each
other.
