AUTOMOTIVE TWO WHEELER COOLING SYSTEM:

CONTENTS:
 Necessity for cooling system.
 Requirements of a cooling system.
 Types of cooling system.
 Air cooling system.
 Liquid system.
 Oil cooling system.

NECESSITY OF A COOLING SYSTEM:

 Thermal efficiency of an petrol engine is anywhere between 30% to 40%.
 Around 70% of the energy is last.
 About 25% of the total heat energy is last to cylinder walls.
 The heat has to be not removed from the cylinder and surrounding area.
 If not its can lead to detonation, lubricant burning and engine over heat.
 Overheating leads to ware pose of engine components and engine seizure.
 Engine is designed to prepare at a particular temperature and to maintain this
temperature a cooling system is required.

REQUIRMENT OF A COOLING SYSTEM:

 The cooling system should be able remove heat generated by the engine and maintain
optimal temperature.
 If the cooling system cooled the engine beyond operation temperature.
 The thermal efficiency of the engine drops.
 Vaporization of fuel is affected.
 Lubricant viscosity increase, which leads to drop in mechanical efficiency.
 Only upside is improved volumetric efficiency.

TYPES OF COOLING SYSTEM:

 There three types of cooling system employed in two wheeler.
 Air cooling.
 Liquid cooling.
 Oil cooling.

AIR COOLING:
 This is the most common type of cooling system employed in motor cycle and
scooters.
 In the air currents flowing over engine cylinder and head will carry the heat away
from the engine.
 The heat dissipation heat depends of following.
 Surface area.
 Temperature difference.
 Metal conductive.
 Mass of air passing over the engine.
 The surface area is improved by providing fins around the cylinder and head.
 Air flow is achieved through the vehicle movement.
 In case of scooters, a blower attached to the engine crank that blows air around the
engine.

ADVANTAGE:
 They are lighter and easy to maintain.
 They warm up quickly.
 They can operate at extreme climatic conditions.

DISADVANTAGE:
 Uneven cooling of engine.
 Air cannot carry heat efficiency.
 Certain operating conditions can cause engine overheating.
