Analysis:

The first law of thermodynamics may often be used to determine an


unknown temperature.

In this case, there is no mechanical energy component. So relevant terms


include heat transfer by convection and radiation from the surface, thermal
energy generation due to ohmic heating within the conductor, and a change
in thermal energy storage.

Since we wish to determine the rate of change of the temperature, the first
law should be applied at an instant of time.
