Electronic Device: Smartphone

Smartphones are one of the most common electronic devices that almost everyone owns.
This device has become an absolute necessity in this modern age; from communication,
business, banking, education, etc. Almost everything can be accessed through the tip of our
fingers, thanks to these devices. Smartphones are developments from old handheld devices like
the telephone and the cell phone. Smartphones, unlike the ones before it, offer a wider range of
features because of its speed, power, and its ability to connect to different networks.

1. Is the device a part of a computer system? If yes, is it a computer peripheral? If not, how is
this device classified?

A smartphone is defined as a “portable device that combines mobile telephone and

computing functions into one unit.” This device, on its own, can be considered as a computer
network because it has the capability to accept input, process and store information, and provide
output to its user. It functions both as a personal digital assistant and a cellular phone.
Smartphones can also be a part of a network. For example, like cell phones, this device is part of
a cellular network. A cellular network is a wireless communication network which can be used to
transmit data, voice, and other types of content. A smartphone can be part of this network
through a SIM Card that allows the device to receive calls, text messages, or connect to the
internet through mobile internet services.

2. Be able to defend (and convince) that your device is the most indispensable among the other
electronic devices.

Smartphones are absolutely essential to our day to day lives. Especially now that various
changes have taken place across the different facets of society. Firstly, smartphones allow us to
communicate through a variety of ways (SMS, call, instant messaging, video-chatting, etc.).
Smartphones have also allowed us to access different forms of media and entertainment through
the internet. Applications and social networking sites that are available for smartphones come in
various forms. It allows users to create, indulge in, and consume content that fits their interests,
and is also crucial in shaping our culture. Smartphones are also used in education. Aside from
the communication that it provides, it allows students and educators to access unlimited amounts
of information on the internet. With the recent shift from traditional to online classes, the need
for this device became even higher. Smartphones really helped in making our lives so much
easier. To be able to keep a computer in your pocket and bring it anywhere is an indispensable
feature that not all electronic devices have.
