Don’t Forget White!

By Veronica Buckley

People often don’t think of white as a color. White is sometimes considered the absence
of color. However, white is the blending of all colors. If you look closely at white in nature, you
will notice that few things are completely white. Think of gray-tinged clouds and blue-tinged
snow.
In many cultures, white suggests purity and innocence. In other cultures, it represents
mourning and death. Medical facilities use white to suggest cleanliness.
White products are often the most popular. For example, one in four consumers bought a
white car in 2013. In advertising, white space used to mean wasted space. However, some
companies now use white space to great effect. Research shows that the use of white in
advertisements and product packaging creates an attractively simple aesthetic. It also helps the
consumer to focus on the product itself.

name of the article and the author. Then use your own words to retell the main ideas. What are
the most important points the author is trying to make?
Remember, the main idea of a paragraph may be summarized in one or two sentences.
You don’t need to include minor (less important) details in your summary.

Job Hunting: Some Colorful Tips

Lawrence Cho

Tempted to wear that orange and purple shirt to your next job interview? Think again.
Research shows that employers choose job applicants who wear conservative colors. A recent
survey indicates that the most favored colors are blue and black. Color psychologists believe that
black communicates leadership qualities. Blue suggests someone will be a good team player.
Gray clothing suggests that an individual is logical and analytical. Brown means dependable.
White suggests truth and organization.
However, artistic organizations might take a different approach. These employers believe
that green, yellow, purple, and orange clothing communicate that an applicant is creative and
individualistic. Red, of course, means power and energy.
So for your next job interview, remember that you are marketing yourself. Be aware that
color is part of the package. You want to be remembered for your skills, not your colorful
clothes. Leave the trendy clothes in your closet. After you get the job, you may be able to expand
your color choices. At the interview, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Happy job hunting!
