INTRODUCTION ABOUT NIFT
National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) :

• It is a premier Institute of Design, Management and Technology was set up by the Ministry of Textiles,
Government of India.

• At present the centres are at Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Chennai, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Jodhpur,
Kangra, Kannur, Kolkata, Mumbai, Panchkula, Srinagar, New Delhi, Patna, Raebareli and Shillong.

• Flagship program of NIFT
• Duration: 4 years
• Scope: Design unique fashion identity.
• The core domain areas of the department have been
identified as Design and illustration, Fundamentals of
apparel and devpt., Value addition for apparel and
history & contemporary design.
• Subjects: Apparel Construction Methods, Colour Mixing,
Computer-Aided Design, Elements of Textiles, Fabric Dyeing
and Printing, Fashion Illustration and Design, Fashion

B.Des. (Leather Design)
• Fashion and Interior Design course
• Duration: 4 years
• Scope: Create prepared design professionals and
design entrepreneurs for Fashion leather
productions, Luxury goods and allied product
sectors in National and International building sector.
• Subjects: Common Foundation Program in Design,
understanding leather and non-leather materials, Fashion
Illustration, Pattern Making and Construction, Leather
Processing, Surface Techniques, Field Studies, Computer
Applications, Retailing and Design Projects in garments and
small goods, understanding of manufacturing processes,
Advanced Illustration and Technical Drawings, Advanced
Pattern Making and Construction, Merchandising & Supply
Chain, Production Systems and Analysis are the other areas
of study. Students also undergo an industry internship for
hands-on experience, Research and Development in
design.

B.Des. (Accessory Design)
• Products & Accessories Design course
• Duration: 4 years
• Scope: Create design professionals with embedded
fashion knowledge and create innovations across
platforms like Jewelleries, crafts, personal
accessories, soft goods and work gear.
• Subjects: Common Foundation Program in Design,
appreciation and insight of various accessory types, basic
understanding of materials and processes, construction
principles, anthropometrics, principles of sizes and
proportions, with a broad orientation to a socio-cultural
and historical context of the sector, develop realistic design
approach , design collection in relation to fashion identity
and prevailing fashion trends, Develop competence in
handling marketing and retail environment, product
merchandising, and consumer interface issues within a
design context, integrating finer aspects of
technology, execute design development projects within a
business context, integrating design in business.

• study of textile designing which is an integral part of
fashion industry
• Duration: 4 years
• Scope: the study of the concepts and processes of
creating designs for knitted, woven or printed
fabrics, embroidery designs, print, weave, color
detailing, texture, etc.

B.Des. (Fashion Communication)
• One of the fields of mass communication
• Duration: 4 years
• Scope: areas such as visual merchandising, styling,
graphic design, display and exhibit design,
advertising, public relations, and creative writing.
• Subjects: fundamental of communication and
design, Fashion Studies, History and Philosophy of Design,
Communication concepts and Process, Writing skills,
Consumer Behavior in Fashion, Computer Application,
Graphic Design, Visual Merchandising, Photography, Design
Methodology and Integrated Term Project, Visual
Merchandising, Graphic Design, Styling and Photography,
Fashion Journalism are studied in greater detail, with
emphasis on project work, practice and fine-tune their soft
skills like client interaction, presentation, project
management and understand the financial aspects of a
project.

disciplines.
• A rich collection of e-books and other digital resources including leading online databases are

• All RCs subscribe to leading international fashion forecast services and journals on Fashion and
Textiles.
• The audio-visual materials in CDs and DVDs are primarily used as teaching aid. AV collections
pertain to history of costume and art; fashion illustration, garment manufacturing and design
collections of NIFT graduates.
• The reference collections of RCs comprise manuals, standards, reports, news clippings, trade
catalogues from manufacturing industries and retailers; and other information sources.
