DESIGN BRIEF - NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF FASHION TECHNOLOGY ( NIFT)

INTRODUCTION :

FASHION

Fashion is about a societal and individual style of clothing and accessories that reflect the current nature
of the world.

For those who embrace fashion, it is about the latest trend, the newest style and the sheer joy of personal
expression.

Fashion is dynamic, changing in subtle or dramatic way depending on designers artistic inspirations, and
trends are often born based on style choices of public figures.

FASHION IN ARCHITECTURE

Like architecture, fashion is an art dealing with structure and shape, one that relates to the form and
function of the human body. Oftentimes the introduction of a small element, such as a zipper or a
doorknob, can completely alter the perception of a work.

Fashion is important for many reasons, including being a form of personal identity. Fashion lets express
style and personality. Fashion also enables people to display personality and personal preferences.
Fashion plays an important role in establishing identity, beliefs and thoughts throughout the world.

NIFT

National Institute of Fashion Technology was set-up in 1986 at New Delhi by the Ministry of Textiles,
Government of India as a registered society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. Today across the
globe, NIFT is acknowledged as a premier institute for imparting in various areas of fashion education
including design, management and technology.

Every year NIFT offers professionals in the industry to take up leadership positions in the national and
international fashion spectrum. NIFT has set academic standards and excelled in the thought leadership
by providing a pool of creative genius and technical competence.

The NIFT Act 2006 has empowered NIFT to award degrees. The statutory status given to the Institute,
with the President of India as the Visitor, NIFT has been saddled with huge responsibility.

To fulfill its vision, the NIFT has casted its mission “To establish NIFT as a centre of excellence in
fashion business education, a nodal agency for benchmarking fashion education in India and
apex body for training of trainees in fashion business education”.
The NIFT strives to position itself as one of the best fashion education institutions in the world.
Undoubtedly, such institutions are the ones which are autonomous; financially viable; able to attract the
best talent for teaching; attract the best students; able to get the best companies for better recruitment
and employability of its graduates; produce high quality research; and generate a body of work aimed at
achieving overall social good.

The NIFT rears its talented students to become highly competent professionals in the area of fashion
design, technology and management, capable of providing enlightened leadership to the Indian fashion
business industry with humility and sensitivity.

NIFT- ACADEMIC

NIFT realized that if it intends to play a pioneering role to help and support business competitiveness of
Indian fashion industry in a global context, its educational offerings should be re-constructed to suit the
changing business context. Its educational offerings now encompass the following types of programmes:

Professional Academic Programmes are offered as full-time undergraduate and graduate programmes in
various areas of design, technology and management of 4 and 2 years duration respectively.

These programmes are offered through 10 courses leading to the conferment of professional qualifications
equivalent to a Bachelor and Master’s Degree.

NEED

The global trade in apparel is around Rs.10,00,000 crore, which is expected to increase to Rs.16,25,000
crore by 2019. China and India would become major players in the apparel industry as the focus of the
worlds major buyers is shifting to them for sourcing of basic garments, respectively.

NIFT has exposed the Indian fashion industry to the world’s finest design expertise, management
practices and manufacturing technologies. It has created a learning environment that encourages
innovation, creativity and excellence. NIFT is a multi-disciplinary and multi-dimensional Institute that
intends to continue to play the path-finder’s role. The NIFT Act, 2006 empowers the Board of Governors of
the NIFT to establish new Campuses through a well-defined policy. It has increased its footprints by
establishing 15 Campuses.

AIM

learning environment that suits the course.

Why Coimbatore?

 Kongu Nadu is among the most industrialized regions in the country. Agriculture and
textile industries contribute majorly to the economy of the region. It is one of the major
producers of textiles including cotton, apparels and knit wear, and hosieries.
 Coimbatore is the ‘Manchester of South India’. It ranks 2nd in the production of Cotton
Yarns. Cotton is grown in Coimbatore in bulk and this boosted to make it as a "Textile
City".
 Coimbatore exports about 20 % of readymade garments. It employees 35% of work
force in Textile industry and accounts for 80% of the textile machinery manufactured in
the country. Established in 1910 at Coimbatore, Lakshmi Mills has two units to
manufacture 100 percent cotton yarns, blended yarns and yarns produced from special
fibres. Products manufactured include yarns, fabrics and garments.
 Today, some of the best known global brands in textile machinery and component
manufacturing are home – grown enterprises. Coimbatore houses a large number of
small, medium and large textile mills.

 The Coimbatore region is famed for the quality of its cotton and dyed fabric. Today, the
region covered / nearby Erode, Coimbatore and Tirupur have the highest concentration
of textile activity specializing in spinning, weaving, power looms and knit wear are hailed
as the textile hub of the world.
 A large produce of the manufacture is exported to different countries. Exports include
knitwear, woven apparel and home furnishings. Tirupur is home to some of Asia’s
largest garment manufacturing companies, exporting hosiery clothes worth more than ₹
21,000 Crores.
 Tamil Nadu is the ‘Yarn Bowl’ of India produces 40 % of total Yarn in India. Tirupur is
the biggest Knitting cluster in India - ‘Knitting City’ is a major textile and knit wear hub
contributing to 90% of total cotton knit wear exports from India.
 Tamil Nadu has 50% of India’s Textile Mills. As per the Tamil Nadu New Integrated
Textile Policy 2019, the textile industry of Tamil Nadu provides employment to over 31
Lakh people and has more than ₹ 50,000 crore exports with 1/3 of textile business in
the country.

The site is located on Siruvani main road at 1 km distance from Perur Patteswarar temple, 12
km from gandhipuram and 7 kms from ukkadam
