What is the relationship between reading and writing?

Reading is predominantly passive, though energy is expended doing

it. Writing is primarily active, requiring the investment of physical and intellectual
effort.
To simplify the consideration of the connection between reading and writing,
reading is here defined as the ability to decode written text quickly and accurately
and to comprehend what is read. Writing is defined as the ability to produce
connected text (sentences, paragraphs, and documents), either by handwriting or
keyboarding, that communicates an idea or information.
There is a close relationship between the skills and understandings required for
successful reading and those required for writing. Learning to write supports
learning to read, and vice versa.
Reading and writing are both integral to thinking and learning. They
remain intertwined as students become proficient in both areas
