WHAT IS
READING
?
READING
It is the process of
looking at a series of
written symbols and
getting meaning
from them.
READING
It is an active
interaction
between the
reader and the
text.
READING
When we read, we use our eyes
to receive written symbols
(letters, punctuation marks and
spaces) and we use our brain to
convert them into words,
sentences and paragraphs that
communicate something to us.
READING
Reading can be silent (in
our head) or aloud (so
that other people can
hear).
It is a receptive skill -
through it
we receive information.
THE
HISTORY
OF
READING
THE 5 LEVELS OF
COMPREHENSION

1.Literal
2.Interpretative
3.Critical
4.Integrative
5.Creative
1. Literal Comprehension
This is the basic
understanding of a reading
material manifested by
knowledge if details that are
directly stated in the text
such as the character, plot,
setting, and etc.
2. Interpretative Comprehension
This is a process of perceiving
ideas and information implied by
the text such as data that can be
acquired by reading between the
lines.
E.g understanding connotation
or emotional meaning of words,
figures of speech, etc.
3. Critical Comprehension
It involves determining truths
and untruths, noting
inconsistencies and fallacies or
errors in reasoning in a reading
material.
The reader is able to judge
whether the reading material is
valid or not.
4. Integrative Comprehension
This is the ability to draw
insights and conclusions to
apply lessons to real life
situations.
Reading is of no value
unless we apply what we
read into our life itself.
5. Creative Comprehension
This involves the use of imagination
and creativity in doing something
relevant to but not necessarily limited
to material.
This includes formulating oral or
written reactions, extending, altering
or continuing a story, arguing a point,
composing a poem or a song and
inventing something out of what one
read.
What is the importance
of READING?
IMPORTANCE OF READING
As a tool subject, it helps
students acquire data they
need in their search for
knowledge.
 A non-reader or a student
who is deficient in reading
will definitely not be able to
learn much.
It helps a person in gathering
essential data that can form the
bases of informed and intelligent
decisions.
 Intelligent and informed decisions are
only achieved after careful analysis of
data.
 The amount and quality of data that is
gathered by a person positively
correspond to an excellent decision.
It allows readers to release and
be relieved of stress.
 Books, magazines, comic strips
and other entertaining reading
materials give readers relaxation
and peace of mind.
What is Reading
Comprehension?
Reading Comprehension
Reading comprehension is the
ability to process text,
understand its meaning, and to
integrate with what the reader
already knows.
An individual’s ability to
comprehend text is influenced by
their skills and their ability to
process information.
In the words of Montesquieu:
“…. the love of reading
enables a man to exchange
the wearisome hours of life
which come to everyone for
hours of delight.”
