Speech #1 - Abortion, when to legalize it or not.

Today i will be disscusing Weather abortion should be legalized or not, by introducing you to
the next quote: is it important to live or to have a good life

Good morning ladies and gentleman in this auditory, I’m Kristel Peralta representing lic eo
panamericano, and I’m here in front of you to expose you my point of view about the next
topic, Abortion, when to legalize it or not.

I was raised with different ideologies, thats why I never thought i’d be standing here in front
of you talking exactly about this topic, I first will like to cover with the fact that forty seven
thousand women in the world die each year for unsafe abortions.
An interesting fact that personally let a lot of thoughts running through my head, specially
because if abortion would be legal probably that percentage is going to decrease. To support
this statement we can see this graph from the world factbook, also known as central
intelligence agency, pictured in the slide, where we can see each country’s rate of maternal
mortality in countries were abortion is ilegal according to 2015, As you may see, there’s
Bolivia with a rate of 206, Paraguay with 32, being this two the higher countries with this
maternal mortality rate, also we can see Ecuador with a rate of 64, same as Colombia, and
Polonia with 3 being the lowest.

Now memorize this numbers, because THIS graph

will show you how the mortality rate decreases for each country, besides they are not the
same countries from before, we can still see a change between their data, for example in
Cuba where it shows 39 as their maternal mortality rate, being this the highest country, and
Sweden being the lowest with 4.
This two graphics clearly shows the difference it could make if abortion is legalized, mostly
because if its legalized, abortions would be safer.

Once the statistcs are clear, we can clarify that Abortion is a very controversial topic, that
when you introduce it to a conversation, most of the people will roll their eyes and even they
will try to change the theme. The discussion that is on fire right now is whether they should
legalize it or not. As you can see on the graph, it shows in which countries it's legal, where it
is not, and other countries with different exceptions. There are a lot of different cases where
it's morally acceptable to legalize it. For example there is violation, and as a result of it you
can get pregnant and you can abort it if you need. Also, when you do not have enough
resources to take care of the children, then you will bring into the world a child who may
have a miserable life, not enough food, child exploitation, or even not a stable home. As a
matter of fact, the most supported argument to deny abortion is the ‘right to life’, which is
ironic because its an argument that doesn’t have any justification or sense. why?, here it is,
the ‘right to life’ includes to have a good house, to be free, even from when you start to
breathe. This argument mostly concentrates on protecting the baby, they actually don't care
about the mother, or the future of that family, as soon as the child is brought to life,
‘‘everything is okay, it doesn't matter if it will die from hunger, or if it will be unwanted’’ right?
but it is not. Of course there are a lot of options to choose instead of abortion, like adoption,
but adoption doesnt do what abortion does, it doesnt end a prgnancy, wont relieve the
burden of pregnancy, and I’m pretty sure that most of the women in this auditory would
understand what i’m talking about when I mention pregnacy pain, and it wont avoid the risks
of getting pregnant because it does include a lot of risks, even more than abortion has. Most
of their risks are high blood pressure, gestational diabetes, infection, stillbirth, depression
and anxiety and death. By that i’m not saying that abortion is 100% safe, but by legalizing it,
at least it will be safer to go to a certificated clinic instead of going to a weird place from
someone your friend recommended where you know it will not be properly sterilized, and
that’s why the ‘‘abortion is more dangerous than pregnancy’’

The World Health Organization estimates that in the year In 2008, some 358,000 women
worldwide died from causes related to pregnancy and childbirth, such as hemorrhage,
hypertensive disorders, sepsis and infections, anemia and childbirth obstructed. In
developed countries where abortion is allowed by law and health personnel are trained to
offer safe services, abortion mortality rate is low, 0.2 to 2.0 deaths per 100,000 abortions,
although pregnancy-related mortality is about nine times higher: nine deaths per 100,000 live
births. In Ecuador, we are still fighting to legalize abortion, Actually it was a proposal that
was almost getting certificated when our president decided it to remove it. Here the abortion
topic is somthing sacred, 7 young women give birth each day in Ecuadir, which increases the
risks of having that baby, Which would make maternal rate mortality increase, example in
our different provinces, like el oro, has a 7,0 % rate on maternal mortality, then goes
chimborzaon with 5,7 and the other ones, so what do you think is better? To avoid the risks
you could get from the pregnancy and have that baby, bringing it into a place that is not the
most appropriate for it to live? Or to avoid that risk and look for your safety first so you can
bring a baby in the proper conditions?
the world is closed to an idea where there are restrictions on being free, that’s why i invite
you to spread this point of view which stands that by legalizing abortion where are not
obligatin everyone to do it, we are jiust giving the opportunity to the ones who neded it.

Thanks
- Kristel Peralta.
