Mathematics: Lattice Method

Lesson Objective
● After direct instruction about what the lattice method is and how to use it for
multiplication, students will multiply two-digit by two-digit numbers using the lattice
method as a new math strategy.
Standards Addressed
● CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.NBT.B.5
○ Multiply a whole number of up to four digits by a one-digit whole number, and
multiply two two-digit numbers, using strategies based on place value and the
properties of operations. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations,
rectangular arrays, and/or area models.
Anticipatory Set
● Engage students by starting with a number talk (26 x 34)
○ “Friends, we’re going to start today with a number talk for two-digit by two-digit
multiplication. I’m going to put a problem on the board and give you all a few
minutes to think about it with your whiteboards. Don’t forget our hand signals
that we use in number talks!”
Perceived Objective and Rationale
● “Today we are going to be learning about what the lattice method is and how to use it to
solve different multiplication equations. The lattice method is important to learn about
because it is another strategy you all can use when doing multiplication problems. So far,
I know you all have learned many different strategies that you can use for multiplication
problems, but that’s a good thing because knowing more strategies allows you to pick the
one that best works for you and the way your brain learns!”
Input and Modeling
● Have online pdf ready to show
● Begin by introducing the lattice method as another multiplication strategy
○ “I love the different ways I saw your brains working in the number talk earlier,
but today, I’m going to teach you all a new strategy to solve multiplication
problems. You can use it for one-digit by one-digit problems, two-digit by
two-digit problems, or even four-digit by four-digit problems!”
● Next, walk them through how to set-up the lattice method
○ Allow them to use graph paper or mini whiteboards if they prefer
○ “Let’s start by drawing two boxes side-by-side … Excellent, now lightly draw a
diagonal line through the two boxes.”
● Then, solve a multiplication problem with the lattice method in a whole-group
○ Start with a one-digit by one-digit problem (62 x 7), then move to a two-digit by
two-digit problem (38 x 29)
○ Ensure that all students are following along by drawing on their whiteboards
exactly what the teacher is doing on the big whiteboard
Check for Understanding + Guided Practice
● Circle back to the number talk problem and solve it as a class using the lattice method
○ Give students 3 minutes to silently solve the problem on their own whiteboards
(set a timer!)
○ Once the timer rings, students will do a pair-share by turning to a classmate and
sharing their answer and checking their work
○ Then, solve the problem on the board step-by-step and ask students to check their
work as the teacher is showing her work
■ Students can raise their hand when their work differs from the teacher’s
work to flesh out common mistakes that the students may make
Independent Practice
● Students will continue practicing the lattice method for multiplication on an independent
worksheet
● Float throughout students to ensure that students are understanding the content
Assessment
● Assess the Independent Practice to see how students learned the skill
Closure
● “What did you all learn today? … Thank you for sharing! And why is this important for
us to know? … Great thinking! Thank you all so much for your hard work today!”

Differentiation
● For students who need more support: work individually or in small groups with them
during independent practice to explain the lattice method; go to various interventionists to
receive specialized instruction
● For students who need less support: allow them time to go on Freckle math or Symphony
math to undergo more multiplication practice in order to reinforce the learning
