made enormous (87) ________ in making food more fit to eat, it has, at the same time, made many
food unfit to eat. Some research has shown that perhaps 80% of all human illnesses are related to diet
and 40% of cancer is related to the diet as (88) ________, especially cancer of the colon. Different
cultures are more prone to (89) ________ certain illnesses because of the food that is characteristic in
these cultures. (90) ________ food related to illness is not a new discovery. In 1945, government
researchers realized that nitrates and nitrites, commonly used to preserve color in meats, and other
food additives, caused cancer. Yet, these carcinogenic additives remain in our food, and it becomes
more difficult all the times to know which things on the packaging labels of processed food are helpful
or harmful. The additives, which we eat, are not all so direct. Farmers often give penicillin to beef or
poultry, and because of this, penicillin has been found in the milk of treated cows. Sometimes similar
drugs are (91) ________ to animals not for medicinal (92) ________ but for financial (93) ________.

94. A. pass B. conquer C. seize D. obtain
95. A. operations B. practices C. questions D. issues

Part 2. Read the passage below and choose the best answer to each question
Two things explain why a new infectious disease is so alarming. One is that, at first, it spreads
exponentially. As tens of cases become hundreds and hundreds become thousands, the mathematics
run away with you, conjuring speculation about a health-care collapse, social and economic disruption
and a deadly pandemic. The other is profound uncertainty. Sparse data and conflicting reports mean
that scientists cannot rule out the worst case –and that lets bad information thrive.
So it is with a new corona virus, known as 2019-ncov, which has struck in China. The number of
reported cases grew from 282 on January 20th to almost 7,800 just nine days later. In that time four
reported cases outside mainland China have multiplied to 105 in 19 territories. Doubt clouds
fundamental properties of the disease, including how it is passed on and what share of infected people
die. Amid the uncertainty, a simulation of a corona virus outbreak by Johns Hopkins University in
October, in which 65m people lost their lives, was put about as a prediction. It is not.
Those are the right questions, though: will the new virus become a global disease? And how deadly
will it be? A definite answer is weeks or months away, but public-health authorities have to plan today.
The best guess is that the disease has taken hold in China and there is a high risk that it spreads
around the world –it may even become a recurrent seasonal infection. It may turn out to be no more
deadly than seasonal influenza, but that would still count as serious. In the short term that would hit the
world economy and, depending on how the outbreak is handled, it could also have political effects in
China.
The outbreak began in December. The repeated mingling of people and animals in China means
that viral mutations that infect humans are likely to arise there; and mass migration to cities means that
they are likely to spread between people. This virus probably originated in bats and passed through
mammals, ending up in Wuhan’s wet market, where wild animals were on sale. Symptoms resemble
flu, but can include pneumonia, which may be fatal. About 20% of reported cases are severe, and need
hospital care; about 2% of them have been fatal. As yet, there is no vaccine or antiviral treatment.
The world has never responded as rapidly to a disease as it has to 2019-ncov. Even so, the virus
may still do great harm. As humans encroach on new habitats, farm more animals, gather in cities,
travel and warm the planet, new diseases will become more common. One estimate puts their cost at
$60 billion a year. Sars, mers, Nipah, Zika, Mexican swine flu: the fever from Wuhan is the latest of a
bad bunch. It will not be the last.

The Lost Fort
In 2013, archaeologists discovered the remains of an ancient fort built in North America by
Spanish explorers - four decades before the arrival of other European settlers. Why did the Spaniards
build Fort San Juan, and what happened to them? Technology is helping to answer these questions.
In 1567, Spanish explorer Juan Pardo and his men built a fort in the Appalachian Mountains -
40 years before the English established Jamestown in Virginia. As part of Spain's ambitious exploration
of the Southeastern United States, it established colonies in St. Augustine, FL, and Santa Elena, SC.
Pardo built a series of forts that stretched from the coast of South Carolina to Eastern Tennessee.
He and his men were searching for gold. If they found it, Spain planned to establish more
colonies in the region. But 18 months after Fort San Juan was built, a tribe of Native Americans known
as the Mississippians attacked it, killing all the Spanish soldiers except one.
Archaeologists believe the Mississippians killed the Spaniards because the explorers were
mistreating the Native Americans in a variety of ways.

Page 6/7
Modern archaeologists discovered the long-buried fort using a technology called magnetometry,
which uses x-rays to create images from subterranean scans. Magnetometers can detect artifacts
made of iron, steel, brick, and different kinds of rock.
In fact, the archaeologists were studying a nearby Native American ceremonial mound
when they came across the ancient fort's foundation, moat, and entryway by accident. Since the
excavations started, scientists have found artifacts such as iron nails, pottery, and an iron clothing
hook.
The doomed Spanish explorers never found their gold, but the region is so rich in the precious
metal that later settlers found nuggets lying on the ground.
If Pardo had discovered that gold, Spain might have further colonized the area, and the
southeastern part of the U.S. might have become part of Latin America. Instead, the Spaniards stayed
away, and in 1607 the English built their settlement at Jamestown, beginning the region's permanent
history of colonization.
