DEFINITION
 Gout is form of arthritis caused by excess uric acid in the
bloodstream.
Gout most classically affects the joints in the base of the big
toe.
Gout are due to the formation of uric acid crystals in the joints
and the body’s response to them.
Gout attacks often occur without warning in the middle of the
night.
CLINICAL MANIFESTATION
Sudden and severe pain in a joint, usually in the
middle of the night or early morning.
Tenderness in the joint. It can also be warm to
touch and look red or purple.
Stiffness in the joint.
Mild fever.

NURSING DIAGNOSIS

• IMPAIRED PHYSICAL MOBILITY RELATED TO


PAIN as evidenced by Limited range of motion,
decreased muscle strength.
• ACUTE PAIN RELATED TO GOUT as
evidenced by swelling, inflammed, tenderness
and with fever of 37.7C, with a painscale of
8/10.
NURSING MANAGEMENT
 Assess for the pain using painscale of 1-10 to describe the severity.
Evaluate or continue monitor degree of joint inflammation or pain.
Apply cold packs to inflamed joints to ease discomfort and reduce
swelling.
Encourage the patient to perform relaxation technique to promote
rest.
Use cognitive therapy such as creative visualization to distract the
patient from the pain.
Encouraged adequate fluid intake.
CON’T
Assist with active or passive range of motion.
Encouraged patient to maintain upright and erect posture
when sitting, standing, or walking.
HEALTH TEACHING
 Educate patient to eat health diet.
 Avoid foods that may trigger a gout flare, including foods high
purine and limit alcohol intake.
 Encourage learn self management skills. Join a self
management education class to help the client manage the
pain.
 Loosing weight is very important for overweight or obese,
losing weight reduces pressure on joints particularly weight
bearing joints like the hips and knees.
CON’T
Avoid or limit alcohol consumption.
Do the moderately daily exercise
Limit meat and seafood intake.
Drink atleast 6-8 glasses of water everyday.
Eat enough green leafy vegetables, citrus fruits and dairy
products.
