Exercise 6.

In the Figure here the

ground is flat and
horizontal. Vein A and
vein B are displaced by a
vertical fault. Determine
the magnitude, direction
and sense of
displacement of the
fault. 1
From the stereonet plot, the
intersection of veins A and B is 29°,
032°.
Plot the intersection lines using
the trend 032° on the map.
Intersection X is cut by the fault at
point X’ at the surface; and
intersection Y at Y’.
Next, construct cross section along
A-A’, B-B’ and C-C’ (next page)

2
Section A-A’ is along the intersection X-X’. Plot
the intersection line using the plunge angle of
29°. It intersect the fault at P, at a depth of 165
m.
Section B-B’ is along the intersection Y-Y’. Plot
the intersection line using the plunge angle of
29°. It intersect the fault at Q, at a depth of 86
m.
Section C-C’ is along the vertical fault. Plot the
points P and Q using the information above.
Join P-Q to obtain the rake/pitch of the fault,
which is 56° from west.
The vertical displacement is 75 m.
The horizontal displacement is 50 m.
The net displacement is 90 m.
The strike-slip component is dextral.
The northern block moved upwards relative to
the southern block.
