EGE 2309: ENGINEERING SURVEYING I ASSIGNMENT

Date: 15th February 2023 Deadline 27th April 2022

1.
The four corners A, B, C and D of a rectangular building were set out by intersection from two control
points G and H. After the setting out had been completed, the reduced levels of A, B, C and D were
taken and the lengths of the diagonals were measured with a steel tape of length 29.995 m. The setting
out and measurement data are given in Table 1

Calculate
(a) the bearings required to establish points A and B from both control points
(b) the error between the designed value and the set out value of the horizontal length of each diagonal.
Assume that the ground slope along each diagonal was uniform.

Coordinates

A 641.710 513.110 27.120
B 677.065 548.465 28.715
C 705.349 520.181 25.050
D 669.994 484.826 30.475
G 601.520 525.730
H 720.660 540.125

Slope length along diagonal AC = 64.075 m

Slope length along diagonal BD = 64.080 m

2.
A particular cross-section on a proposed road is part in cut and part in fill. Side slopes are to be 1in 1
in cut and 1in 2 in fill and the transverse slope right-angles to the centreline is 1 in 4. The formation
width of the road is to be 14.60 m, the existing ground level on the centreline is 79.46 m above datum
and the required height of fill at the centreline is 0.74 m. ·

The construction is to be controlled using slope rails. The slope rail on the cut side is to be in line with
the required slope of the cutting and is to be attached to two stakes A and B at 1.00 m centres, the
centre of B being 1.00 m away from the edge of the cutting. The slope rail on the fill side is to be
parallel to but offset 1.00 m perpendicularly from the required slope of the filling and is to be attached
to two stakes C and D at 1.00 m centres, the centre of C being 1.00 m away from the edge of the filling.
The tops of stakes A, B, C and D are levelled as 83.71 m, 83.94 m, 75.51 m and 75.54 m above datum,
respective1y.
Calculate
(a) the slope distances along the surface of the ground at right-angles to the centreline at which the
centres of stakes A, B, C and D must be set out

(b) the difference in level between the centre of the top of each stake and the position at which the top
edge of its slope rail must be fixed

3.
A continuous reverse curve connects two parallel straights AB and QP in the parallelogram ABPQ.
The two diagonals AP and BQ intersect at the junction point O and the common tangent parallel to BP.
The following information is given:

Coordinates of Point A: N 9, 858, 995.39 E 9,256, 222.94 m

Coordinates of Point B: N 9, 858, 945.39 E 9,256, 172.94 m
Angle ABP = 255° 44’, Side BP = 65.81 m
Find
a) The radius of each curve.
b) The chainages of the two intersection points on AB and QP, also the chainage of point P, if the
chainage of point A is (100+00).

4.
Part of a highway scheme involves the design and setting out of a simple curve with cubic spirals
transitions at each end. The transitions are designed such that the centrifugal ratio is 0.197 while the
rate of change of centripetal (radial) acceleration is 0.45 m/s3 at a design speed of 100 kph. If the
chainage at the intersection of the straights is 2154.22m and the angle of deflection is 50° 00’00”.
Calculate:
(a) the chainage at the beginning and the end of the total composite curve
(b) the setting out angle for the first three10-m chords on a through chainage basis. Let the first sub-
chord be 3m.
5.
A falling gradient of 4% meets a rising gradient of 5% at chainage 2450 m and level 216.42 m. At
chainage 2350 m the underside of a bridge has a level of 235.54 m. The two grades are to be joined by
a vertical parabolic curve giving 14 m clearance under the bridge. List the levels at 50-m intervals
along the curve.
