HUMAN RIGHTS CONCEPT: Right to freedom from discrimination and

Gender Equality

Laws were passed to address the stereotype portrayal of men and women.
The Magna Carta of Women is comprehensive women’s human rights law that
seeks to eliminate discrimination against women by recognizing, protecting,
fulfilling and promoting the rights of Filipino women, especially those in
marginalized sector. It enumerates the rights of women living in the country and
abroad. It also emphasizes the collective participation of every individual in
implementing this law. Gender equality legal mandates can also be found in the
1987 Philippine Constitution particularly:

Section 14, Article 2 of the 1987 Philippine Constitution provides that the
State recognizes the role of women in nation-building and shall ensure the
fundamental equality before the law of women and men. Section 24, Article 2 of
the 1987 Philippine Constitution recognizes the vital role of communication and
information in nation-building. Section 4, Article 3 of the 1987 Philippine
Constitution, “No law shall be passed abridging the freedom of speech, of
expression or of the press, or the right of the people to peaceably assemble and
petition the government for redress of grievances.

There are several international laws, conventions and campaigns that

recognize the rights of women throughout the globe. According to UN Women in
their website: "Progress towards gender equality is looking bleak. But it doesn’t
need to. A new global analysis of progress on gender equality and women’s rights
shows women and girls remain disproportionately affected by the socioeconomic
fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic, struggling with disproportionately high job
and livelihood losses, education disruptions and increased burdens of unpaid care
work.”

The current status of women in the Philippines according to World Bank

Blogs peened by Helle Bucchave and Nadia Belhaj Hassine Belghith is both a
cause for optimism and a reason to accelerate efforts for promoting better access to
jobs for all women. In the article, the Philippines is a best performer when it comes
to gender equality in the East Asia and Pacific (EAP) region and even globally. The
performance is the second best in the EAP region, after New Zealand.
