B. Expectations
Leisure and Recreation are important to keep oneself healthy. Engaging in physical
activities must be part of one’s active living exercises or lifestyle

At the end of the Module, I can:

1. distinguish the elements of Mountaineering and Aquatics.
2. identify outdoor recreational activities that I can engage (in the future) in considering the
available resources and health restrictions/quarantine status at school, at home, and in my
community.
3. realize the health benefits of indoor recreational and mental games or activities.

Arts and Crafts involves variety of activities involving making things with one's own
hands. Arts and crafts is usually a hobby. Some crafts (art skills) have been practiced for
centuries and handed as a family tradition and later turned into a commercial or occupational
industry one of the values of recreation.

Gardening - The demand on plants during the previous months of the pandemic was so
crazy that people were calling it as the “Plantdemic”. Gardening is the practice of growing and
cultivating plants for consumption, medical, ornamental and even cosmetic use. In Gardening is
considered by many people to be a relaxing activity. On its physical side carrying materials,
squatting, walking around for watering and kneeling are just examples of light to medium
recreational and active leaving activities.

Every activity of the previous community based recreational activities (Arts & crafts and
Gardening) from planning, preparation of materials, doing/installation of the project or planting,
up to clean – up serves as a productive use of free time.

D. Outdoor Recreational Activities

Our country is an archipelago of thousands of islands, surrounded by the ocean and seas
with different types of land formations that make up these islands. A country with lots of
panoramic beauty for interaction of human and nature is how outdoor recreation differs from
other activities.

Outdoor recreations are organized activities done during free time for the participants’
personal reason, where an interaction of man/woman and an element of nature is present.
The outdoors serves as the classroom or avenue for learning and nature teaches us to
understand ourselves better. Outdoor reaction does not have formal rules and is not
competitive in nature which makes it different from outdoor sports. Some of the reaction
activities are:

4. Orienteering – its is part of mountaineering process that involves the use of compass for
correct direction, trail signs to follow through and map as a guide.

Basic Orienteering Skills

a. Folding the map
b. Thumbing the map
c. Orientating the map to north
(with ground or compass)
d. Reading features on the map
e. Taking a compass bearing
f. Following a compass bearing
g. Pacing
h. Judging Distance

b. Styles of Mountaineering

1. Alpine Style Mountaineering - a light and fast mountaineering activity. Mountaineers in this
style generally carry a single load from camp to camp going to a single summit or target.

2. Expedition Style Mountaineering – a slow and heavy style of mountaineering with the use
of porters and packs animals with multiple food supply and used of fixed lines. The destination
requires weeks of trek by foot from base to base.

3. Ultra Lightweight Mountaineering (ULM) – climber ascends the summit using only
lightweight equipment. It involves using harnesses training preparation and actual climb of the
vertical mountain.
