RELIGION AND VALUES EDUCATION (GROWING AS A
MISSIONARY CHURCH)

COURSE GUIDE:

I. Course Title: Religious Education and Values Education 12a: GROWING AS A

MISSIONARY CHURCH

II. Course Overview

A. Introduction
Our course, as referred to the CICM book for Grade 12 - first semester, our main reference, is
entitled, “Growing as A Missionary Church”. The introduction of the CICM book, which shall be considered
as your preliminary reading, would give you a wider understanding on the following questions that matter
on the background of what our course is all about: (A.) “What is the Religious Education in
Catholic/Christian Schools? What is the CICM Religious Education Pedagogy?”; (B.) “What is the CICM-
RP Province’s Vision and Mission of Education?”; and (C) “What is the overview of Religious Education
12a?”
In particular, the big question revolving in this whole course is, “What does it mean to be Church?
This will lead you to reflect on what the Church is and as a Church, how you are to relate with the world
and celebrate meaningfully your life together. Hence, the family, as the basic ecclesial community - the
Church, is a significant setting where you can show whether you have inculcated yo4ur being a Christ-
centered person who loves, discerns, and acts for the common good. Through this, the course will give
you a taste of ecclesiology and sacramentology, hence a complementary course of the Religious
Education 11b. Whereas, you will be guided with the three modules based from the content of our main
reference:
1. Module 1 explores the understanding of the Christian Community and its role in the world that
is grounded in the relationship of Jesus and the Church. It stresses, first, on God’s self-
revelation through Jesus, and then, on His continual revelation in the Church, the community
of disciples, who are being challenged to bring the good news to the humanity.
2. Module 2 elaborates deeply on what the Church is and its role in today’s world according to
the sacred scripture (in particular, the New Testament) and to some church documents. With
this, you shall be reflecting more on the implications of the idea that the Church as a
community makes the face of Jesus visible in today’s world.
3. Module 3 expounds the celebrations and its role in your day to day life as Christian and as a
Church. In here, you shall be pondering on how you are to actualize these celebrations as
you manifest your being a Christian and Church to others.

With the use of this distance learning modality, you shall be encountering some modifications in
the presentation of the lessons, which you need to be aware of for you to be simply directed with;
specifically on the transition of the lessons per unit from the CICM book to the units per module (see
Table No. 1) and the incorporation of the CICM Pedagogy to the 5E’s Model as manifested in the modules
(see Table No. 2). This is due to the synchronization of the module format being used SLU-wide.
May this course develop and guide you on your journey to Religious and Values Education
formation. Good luck and God bless!

the highest standards because you are a better learner. You have the knowledge and skills
that you need to finish a quality work. I believe in you.
4. Submit on time. Before the end of the first grading (midterms) and the second grading (finals)
period, you will be submitting the accomplished activities in the modules through
correspondence or online. Once I receive your materials, I will inform you immediately.

the right track. While waiting for my feedback, you can continue working on the other activities.
Make sure that you do not miss any important part of each module.
6. Answer confidently. In answering the assessment and evaluation activities you are
expected to do the following:
a. Write neatly and legibly and write only on the module if you are sure of your answers.

answered in essay form, stick to the point. Follow the specific number of words given in
the instruction. Also, give proofs of your claim or point-of-view. Cite correctly the
references you use in your work.
7. Work independently. It is expected that you work on the module on your own. You can ask
help from others but do your best to do it first.
8. Motivate yourself. Whatever knowledge or skill you are gaining from this course will
definitely help you in your career. Enjoy what you are doing and everything else will follow.

participating during the Holy Mass every Sunday will help you develop your love for the
Mass or the Holy Eucharist and will lead you to become closer to God who loves all of
us. Listening to the Word of God through the readings and homily will help you to reflect
on the message of God, hence, you will learn how to respond to His call to become a
responsible member of God’s family.

For the non-Catholic Christians and non-Christians, you need to attend the weekly
religious worships and celebrations of your own Church or religion. This is where you
will draw out your weekly Religious involvement requirement. You are also invited to
join in the Catholic celebrations at the Saint Aloysius Gonzaga Parish, either in person
or through the Facebook Livestream. This is not used to convert you into the Catholic
Religion but an invitation for you to experience the beauty of the Catholic celebrations,
so that through this experience, you may gain an understanding on how the Catholic
celebrations are done. It is hoped that this may lead you to a certain level of respect
and acceptance to religious diversity.

For those who are not affiliated with any religious faith, you still need to attend a weekly
celebration or worship of any religious group with whom you are comfortable. It is from
this experience that you will draw out the different weekly religious involvement
reflections required in your RVE subject.

GRADE 12

A warm blessing Louisians!

Allow us your Religion and Values Education 12A teachers to thank you and your family for
being with SLU-LHS (SHS) once again. Let this New Normal in education be seen as a chance
to continue learning with the school and your family assisting you at a different level.

With Religion and Values Education 12A as your core subject, it is expected that you continue
to learn and accomplish the tasks and activities independently whether using online or
correspondence based modality.

Our subject challenges you to understand the Church, using the scriptures, Church traditions,
Church teachings, and your personal experience regarding the matter.

Hence, your Culminating Performance Task would be to celebrate your way of life as Christians,
manifesting your growth as a missionary Church through family prayer meetings.

This requirement would only be realized once you understand the concepts found your
textbook, relate to the activities provided by the module, accomplish all the preliminary tasks,
and integrate what you have learned in your daily life.

Family is a basic unit of the household of God, where family members share the love of God
with each other. Unfortunately, some members do not feel His presence within the family due
to varied circumstances. As a growing missionary Church, you are asked to conduct a weekly
Prayer Meeting in your family at home. This aims to rebuild the relationships in the family with
the presence of the Almighty, through Jesus, who lives and reigns at home.

So always remember that our lessons are part of us and not contained in the classroom. Keep
your focus and purpose why you wish to graduate in senior high school so that you can
overcome the challenges expected in all your subjects.

More power and continue to soar high Louisians!

Sincerely,

Religion and Values Education teachers

Guide Questions:

 Feel and understand its message as you sing the song

 Afterwards, answer the questions that follows

1. Identify at least 5 persons, things, or events where we can “see” the Lord according to the

about God. God is not an absentee God. He is present to us in the very ordinary events of our lives, in
the things that we see, in the persons whom we relate with. When we are conscious of this presence,
we see many things with new eyes, and our relationship with those around us improve. Our awareness
of God’s constant presence will affect will affect how we view life and how we try to live every day.

 We encounter Jesus through the Church (Church is the Sacrament of Jesus)

29
RELIGION AND VALUES EDUCATION (GROWING AS A
MISSIONARY CHURCH)

Topics for this lesson:

I. Jesus’ relationship with God

A. Ministries of Jesus

1. Healing

2. Table fellowship

3. Teachings of Jesus

Relevance of the ministry of Jesus today

Healing in the present time may be observed in discipleship. For instance, we conduct charity
events in the church to the community. Church groups visit the sick and pray for the sick in terms of
physical healing. Furthermore, we give forgiveness to people as we acknowledge our own sinful nature.

Table fellowship in the present time may reflect inclusiveness/acceptance of sinners. For
example, the church is not for the perfect and holy but it welcomes each and every one.

Teaching in the present time is Jesus speaking through the Bible, interpreted and shared by
priests or church leaders. These are mostly observed in catechism and homily.

II. Jesus and the Kingdom

A. The kingdom is Good news

B. The good news of the kingdom does not ask for performance

Context
My School’s Core Values

Guide Questions:

1. Identify the core values of your school (Saint Louis University Laboratory Senior High School)

2. Reflect on how these values are shown in your day to day life

Our actions point to the things that influenced out lives. Our actions embody the values and
principles we are committed to. When people do things, we understand why if we know where they are
coming from, who they are, or what their backgrounds are.

The core values of our school should shape who we are. They should influence how we see
reality and how we act or behave. It is therefore important that we know the core values of our school
and reflect on their implications for us. They should be part of our identity long before we leave the
portals of our alma matter. Maybe we are aware of the sad fact that many of our corrupt leaders both in
the government and in the private sectors come from schools that have lofty ideals. The core values of
their schools have not taken root in their lives so that these people have easily forgotten about them
once they have already graduated. What their school stood for did not become part of their identity.

Church Teaching
Topics for this lesson:

I. Jesus as the foundation of the Church

There are ways of expressing that Jesus is the foundation of the Church:

 Pentecost -The story tells us that after the death of Jesus, the disciples became very afraid
that they all ran away. Later, they started to gather together but they had to lock the doors
because of fear, but once the Spirit descended on them they became courageous and they
went around proclaiming that Jesus is alive. This act led to the growth of the Church.

 Peter (Rock) - The story narrates that Jesus named Peter as Rock for which He will build
His Church, thus Peter became the first pope of the Church.

Module 2: Nature and Mission of the Church

In this module, we explain what the Church is and its role in the contemporary time. Since in the
previous module we said that the Church had its roots in the ministry of Jesus as seen in the new
testament, we will start with some descriptions and insights provided by Scriptures.

The new Testament teaches us that discipleship is what makes a group of people Church. The
Church started with a group of people who walked in the footsteps of Jesus and are witnesses of Jesus’
concern for forgiveness, His compassion, His freedom, His inclusivity, and His love for humanity. This
witnessing is what it means to be Church.

Nota bene:

• The difference between ‘church’ and ‘Church’.

Church – All people everywhere, who believe in the Christ, and in God

church – a building for public worship.

• The difference between laity and clergy

Clergy – refers to the ordained religious Church leaders (ex. Priests, Bishops, bible scholars, the Pope)

Laity – the ordinary people, as distinct from church leaders

Unit 1: Scriptural images of the Church

At the end of the lesson, you will be able to:

a. Identify the scriptural images of the Church by analyzing its origin, the sacred scriptures;

b. appreciate the necessity of the sacred scripture in understanding the scriptural images; and

c. show how equality and unity build the Church by identifying biblical passages related to it.

Context

Louis University Laboratory Senior High School)

2. Why do you consider it as an accomplishment?

38
RELIGION AND VALUES EDUCATION (GROWING AS A
MISSIONARY CHURCH)

Through the years, our school may have been recipient of awards from the government or from
some private organizations because it contributed to the building of a better society. These
accomplishments are made possible by the cooperation of people in the community.

We can accomplish great things as a community than as individuals. If we are united, tasks,
which are seemingly difficult, becomes easier. Much of the great accomplishments in the history of
human beings resulted from collaboration rather than from individual efforts alone. When we contribute
out individual talents for the good of the community, we can do so much more.

Guide Questions:

1. What is your idea of a servant-leader?

2. Do you consider yourself as a servant-leader?

Servant leadership is not just a Christian ideal but also it is a characteristic desired by any
culture or people. Servant – leaders do things not for themselves but for those they are leading and
other people affected by their actions. They can make personal sacrifices and not brag about it.
Servant-leaders are also empowering in a sense that they help others to be able to stand on their own

Church Teaching
In the previous Unit it was made mention that the Church has to assess and re-asses itself to
remain relevant. We need to “read the signs of the times” so that we know what is happening and we
know how to respond (this is why the Catholic Church has many councils that addresses concerns
brought about by the changing times).

The Second Vatican Council was a gathering of Church leaders all over the world to assess
what is happening in the Church and how the Church can respond properly to a fast- changing society.
Saint John XXIII, the Pope at that time envisioned an aggiornamento (updating) within the Church, and
opening of the Catholic Church for a fresh dialogue with other Churches in the world. The Church had
to update itself with the issues, problems, and opportunities in the new situation. Thus, the Scriptural
images of the Church (people of God, temple of the Spirit, Body of Christ) were re – interpreted in the
light of the contemporary situation. In this way, Vatican II restored a more salvation – historical
perspective. The following are the main description of the Church by the council:

45
RELIGION AND VALUES EDUCATION (GROWING AS A
MISSIONARY CHURCH)

I. The Church as People of God

The People of God model is community – oriented, focusing on the interrelationship and mutual
helpfulness of the members. Some features are as follows:

a. Ideally, all should work for the good of the whole Church and this work should operate on the
principle of shared responsibility. This model fosters a more democratic approach to Church and
governance.

b. A structure and a form of authority is necessary but authority will be based on true leadership and not
merely on ranks and position. Also authority is based on service, because they will serve as a sign and
the center of unity.

c. The Holy Spirit pervades the whole Church. All members receive and possess the Holy Spirit, who
fosters a true relationship of love among the members. God’s Spirit, therefore, is not only given to
leaders of the Church.

• Pope, bishops, priests, people form one

Holy Spirit community

• The Pope is the center of unity for the

whole Church. Bishops in communion and
Pope inspires all in virtue of their baptism

• Holy Spirit pervades the whole community

II. The Church as Hierarchical Society

This model is fairly late developed in Church History. The Hierarchical notion of the Church
developed in the late Middle Ages, particularly in the Counter – Reformation period when the Church
was intent on responding to the attacks of the Protestant Reformers. Some features are as follows:

a. The model is based on the idea of the secular state, which has a constitution, government and laws
to help it achieve its proper end. Just as the secular state operates by a chain of command (office of the
president, legislative, executive, judicial, people), so does the Church (Pope, bishops, priests, people).

b. The major function of the church in this model is to teach, govern and sanctify. The Hierarchy
controls each of these functions. Thus, the hierarchy issues authoritative interpretations of the
scriptures, from which they derive decrees and directives for the people to follow.

c. Not a form of clericalism, rather the distinction is to maintain the inerrancy of the message of the
scriptures.

46
RELIGION AND VALUES EDUCATION (GROWING AS A
MISSIONARY CHURCH)

• Pope and bishops are authentic

teachers and interpreters of the scriptures.

• The clergy, who form a separate group

distinct from the rest of the Church, controls all
aspect of Church life, teaching, governing, and
sanctifying.

• The people, who supports the hierarchy,

are instructed by the leaders of the Church in how
to live the gospel.

III. Church as Servant

In this model, the Church emphasizes a new dimension of understanding the Church. The
model fosters the idea that we do not live for ourselves alone, rather we are called to serve the world; to
reach out to those different from us, even our enemies. As an instrument of the kingdom, the Church
exists to serve and not to be served.

The words of Pope Paul VI’s (1965) in Gaudium Et Spes are clear: “the Church seeks a solitary
goal: to carry forward the work of Christ Himself under the lead of the befriending Spirit. And Christ
entered this world to give witness to the truth, to rescue and not sit in judgement, to serve and not to be
served. The important implication of this is we should not limit our responsibilities to grandeurs, rather
our responsibility is to all the strata of humanity to the places where justice is not promoted, gospel
values are not lived, and the marginalized our abandoned.

See pages 42 – 46 of your textbook for further discussion

IV. The Church as envisioned by the second plenary council of the Philippines (PCP II).

PCP II envisioned a renewed how effective the Church’s mission of evangelization was and
proposed ways and means by which the Church can be better service to society. To do that, it was
deemed necessary for the Church to re-think her identity and mission in the changed situation. PCP II
envisioned a renewed Church doing her mission in a new way. First, our Church in the Philippines
should become a communion of communities of disciples, in which all are co – responsible. Second,
the Church as a community of disciples does not exist only for its members. It exists for the world.
Third, to make the mission of the Church in the Philippines more fruitful and effective, the Church
should foster the birth and growth of Basic Ecclesial Communities (BEC). BECs are small Christian
communities, usually families, who gather around the Word of God and Eucharist. These communities
are ideal, because of the lack of vocation to the religious life. And lastly, The Church should focus on
catechesis and worship. Disregarding catechesis will result to the lack of understanding of the faithful
about their faith and at the same time, lack of worship will lead to the deterioration of the faith of the
people.

Song analysis

One Bread, One Body

John Michael Talbot

Refrain: 1. Gentile or Jew

Servant or free
One bread, one body, one Lord of all
Woman or man
One cup of blessing which we bless
No more
And we, though many, throughout the earth
We are one body in this one Lord 2. Many the gifts, many the works
One in the Lord
Of all

Guide Questions:

1. What does body and bread symbolize in the song?

• How is the body and bread related to each other?

• How does the song envision unity?

• What is the source of unity as depicted by the song?

The song was composed to be used within the context of Eucharistic celebration where the
community is nourished by the bread of God’s word proclaimed and explained to us; and the bread of
Christ’s body we receive during communion.

Today, the world is characterized by division. Many nations and communities desire for unity but
they cannot find it. Our Christian faith which is based on solidarity with others must be able to contribute
to the world’s search for harmony and peace.

MODULE 3: THE CELEBRATIONS OF THE

CHRISTIAN LIFE
In this module, you will attempt to describe our celebrations and the role they play in helping you
become more responsible, involved, and concerned members of the Church and citizens of our society.
It will clarify your understanding of Sacraments and their role in your day to day life as Christians and as
a Church. As theologians say, how we celebrate the Sacraments reflects what we are as a Church.

In unit 1, you will see that celebration in every stage of our life reflects the meaning on how we
understand Sacraments. Our celebration of the Sacraments carries the saving grace and action of Jesus
through the power of the Holy Spirit. Unit 2 will tell us that to be part of the Growing Missionary Church
must undergo an initiation by receiving the Sacraments of Initiation. Unit 3 teaches us that the love and
mercy of God is way bigger than our shortcomings and failures. This is possible by receiving the
Sacraments of Healing. Unit 4 will inform us on the importance of discerning our life vocation because as
Christians we are all called to serve God and His people. Thus, understanding the two Sacraments of
Service is necessary.

Unit 1: Towards the Understanding the Meaning of Sacrament

At the end of the lesson, you will be able to:

a. Discuss the meaning of Sacrament which can only be trace its roots in the saving love of Jesus;

have great potentials for transforming an individual and the community. The liturgy of the Mass or the
Eucharist, because it is celebrated every day, has such great potential. Yet many of us do not see or are
not serious with the value of this celebration. May what we have understood about it in this course make

Unit 3: Sacrament of Forgiveness and Healing

At the end of the lesson, you will be able to:

a. Understand that the love and mercy of God is way bigger than our shortcomings and sinfulness.

b. Value the healing and forgiveness offered by Jesus through the sacrament.

c. Reflect at certain passage from the Gospel that showed a healing action of Jesus.

Context
Mother, Mother I am Sick, Call a Doctor Very Quick!

Guide Questions:

1. Recall one instance your life that you were very sick
2. Who were the people who helped you during those times?
3. Are you willing to help those who are sick even if you are not directly associated with them?

There are times that we get sick and this is normal and should surprise us. During this time of
sickness, we obviously feel weak and helpless. Sickness will hinder us from doing the things we usually
do for ourselves and for our family. We become a liability rather than a source of help for them. In effect,
the family members will spend time, resources, and effort to take care of us until we get well. Because of
this negative situation, it is best to opt for a healthy lifestyle to avoid getting sick. More often than not,
many of us are not conscious of our health. The result is that, at some point, we or the people close to
us, experience a serious illness rendering us helpless. It is during this time that we need people to comfort
us or cheer us up.

During this state of sickness, we may find ourselves being isolated. It is also the time when our
faith in God may be weakened, but because of our family members and friends who unceasingly show
their care through their visits, gifts, and reassuring words, we feel we are still part of the community. This
positive experience even at a time when we are not well makes us realize that life is worth living. There
is a reason to hope for faster recovery. The same is true with the experience of pain, hurt, and sadness
when we happen to damage or break a relationship. As part of healing, we want to ask forgiveness and
hope for reconciliation. In the Christian tradition forgiveness and reconciliation are attained with the help
of prayer so that we should always resort to prayer every time we need healing. The following text will
tell us more about the situation of illness and what of faith should do.

Unit 4: Sacrament of Service

a. Know the sacrament of service is born out from the love of God towards humanity;

b. appreciate the love of Jesus as a model in living out the sacrament of service;

c. create a letter to express gratitude to your parents/guardian who sacrifice themselves in the service
of your family.

Context
‘Totoong Serbisyo’

Guide Questions:

1. What are the things you do at home or in your community that you consider service?

2. Why do you consider it as an act of service?

Service is born out of commitment and love in any relationship. Every one of us belongs to a
certain group like the family, circle of friends, school, community, or a religious group. These groups
survive and continue to live meaningfully when the members show their commitment and love through
service. Today, to serve is a great challenge for many people because the world is oriented towards
consumerism and materialism where self-gratification is the primary goal. Despite this reality, every
member of the group is challenged to serve for the benefit of the community because the will to serve is
the beginning of the community. Authentic service is an act of humility. Saint Paul advises the Ephesians
to give this kind of service to one another.
