Word uses the headings in your document to build an automatic table of contents
that can be updated when you change the heading text, sequence, or level.
Click where you want to insert the table of contents – usually near the begin-
ning of a document.
Click References > Table of Contents, and then choose an Automatic Table of
Contents style from the list.
The next three (blue) sections should be separate pages in a thesis. In a seminar
paper they are optional.

General requirements:
I expect compliance with all formal requirements, e.g. correct citation in footnotes
(see examples below) or alternatively Harvard citation style (for examples see:
http://guides.library.uwa.edu.au/ld.php?content_id=15709737).
In Harvard style only the source is given in a very short form (Gross 2017), the
detailed description of the source is given at the end of the paper in the chapter
„bibliography“ or „references“. Footnotes allow the author to add further com-

ments. Some authors abuse this freedom and their main text is often smaller than
the footnotes. This should be avoided.
The argument, i.e. the main text in your thesis should be clear, understandable,
logical and consistent.
Quotations should be clearly marked, if the quotation is less than two lines
long, they can be inserted in your own text in quotes and italics, e.g. „a thorough
litature research is the backbone of any scientific paper“, but quoting what others
have said is not enough, you also have to assess, evaluate and decide.
Longer quotations should always be marked as such by choosing the style
„Quotation Gross“ and by adding quotes, e.g.:
If quotations are not marked and look like your own text, this will be considered
as plagarism and the paper is NOT ACCEPTED.
As already mentioned in class, an important requirement is the critical ap-
proach. No information should be accepted at face value. Doubt is the mother of
good research. When you find a view, opinion or statement, try to find a counter-
argument, a divergent view or a conflicting statement. If you have found it, try to
find out who is right. Your arguments should be based on logics, not on authority.
Apply this critical approach even to your own results, i.e. try to prove that you are
wrong! If you don’t do it, others will. Only if you do not succeed in proving that
you are wrong, there is a likelyhood that others will not be able to do so either
and that you are right - or closer to the truth.
1. Introduction
Sources
“Quotations should be clearly marked, if the quotation is less than two lines
long, they can be inserted in your own text in quotes and italics, e.g. „a
thorough litature research is the backbone of any scientific paper“, but
quoting what others have said is not enough, you also have to assess,
evaluate and decide.”1
These are only examples of possible subchapters. They can also be summarised
in a general chapter „introduction“.
For the main text please choose „Standard Gross“ as the style.
2. Main Section
In the main text, try to avoid the pronoun „I“ and use the the passive instead. Not
„I did not find any cases of...“, but „no cases of ... could be found“.
Try to avoid colloquial language („stupid, cool“), utterances which express your
personal taste or opinion, e.g. „unfortunately, the president was reelected“.
Let somebody else proofread your paper before you submit it!
