Introductory Message

Welcome to Understanding Culture, Society, and Politics 11!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the

Schools Division of Iloilo City and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western Visayas
through the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is
developed to guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible
adults) in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic
Education Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to

guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using
the contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners
in acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity
and employment.

For learning facilitator:

The Understanding Culture, Society, and Politics 11 Activity Sheet will

help you facilitate the teaching-learning activities specified in each Most
Essential Learning Competency (MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face
encounter between you and learner. This will be made available to the learners
with the references/links to ease the independent learning.

For the learner:

The Understanding Culture Society, and Politics 11 Activity Sheet is

developed to help you continue learning even if you are not in school. This
learning material provides you with meaningful and engaging activities for
independent learning. Being an active learner, carefully read and understand the
instructions then perform the activities and answer the assessments. This will be
returned to your facilitator on the agreed schedule.

UNDERSTANDING CULTURE, SOCIETY, AND POLITICS ACTIVITY SHEET

Examining the Functions and Importance of Education in the Society

I. Learning Competency
1. Examine the functions and importance of education in the society.

II. Background Information for Learners

Education is learning new information about our environment and

ourselves. It is a well-known fact that education leads to freedom from
ignorance. When we learn something new, we enhance the way we think that
leads us to come up with better choices in life. Freedom is having many choices
in our actions to help us develop desirable behaviors, experiences, emotions,
and thinking. Education also clears up our real purpose in life and affords us to
acquire competence and accountability in performing our roles and
responsibilities in our family, neighborhood, community, and society.

In the Sociological Perspective, education has a two-fold function -

manifest and latent. The manifest function of education pertains to
socialization. Emile Durkheim described schools as agents of socialization that
prepare children for their future economic roles. Children are taught not just
economic subjects like Mathematics and Science, but also how to fall in line, wait
for their turn, and share what they have. It also aids in transmitting culture, skills,
and values. On the other hand, latent function of education refers to the
unintended functions that are brought about by the school environment. Schools
are venues for expanding people’s networks. They are where you can possibly
find a spouse, a business partner, or friends whom you can keep for life. Also, it
is an avenue to develop one’s ability to work in groups, whether as a leader or as
a member.

In this Learning Activity Sheet (LAS), you have to give your best shot in
composing a “Pagdayaw sa Eskwelahan” or Encomium Speech to Praise our
educational system – the school. Before composing your “Pagdayaw” piece, you
first need to examine the functions and importance of education in society. Only
after which you can express your ideas and thoughts in praising the functions
and importance of education in our society. Good luck and do more than your
best to achieve your assigned task.

Remember

In the Humanities and Social Sciences, we help Senior High School students to
enwrap themselves in tasks and performances by immersing their minds through the
pedagogy of the K to 12 curriculum, which includes the disciplines of communication,
social work, counseling, politics, and philosophy, among others. These disciplines
would serve as a groundwork in shaping them for life.

Education is not only a trend, but a lifelong investment for physical, mental, and
spiritual well-being of every individual. It is through education where we understand our
real identity, purpose, roles, and responsibilities in this world. Not only we understand
these things theoretically, but we are also trained to apply skills and competencies to
survive and live fully in this life. In school, we don’t only obtain knowledge planned for
us to acquire and develop, but also things like formation of friendships among students.
Likewise, they also develop entertainment and socialization opportunities through
school sporting events, dances, bands, and talent shows.

V. Reflection
Directions: Supply the appropriate words to complete the thought of each phrase.
