Name: KEY Sec Number:

Answer the following questions to the best of your ability showing all appropriate work to obtain full
credit. Questions that involve word problems should be answered using a sentence, and appropriate
units provided, in order to receive full credit.

1. (10 pts) Compute the derivative of the following functions:

7
• f (x) = 6e3x
7
f 0 (x) = 6e3x 21x6

• g(x) = 6−6x + 7 x
7
g 0 (x) = 6−6x ln (6) (−6) + x−1/2
2

• H(x) = ln 7x(7x + 5)
!
0 1 1 −1
H (x) = (7x(7x + 5)) 2 ((7) (7x + 5) + (7x) (7))
(7x(7x + 5))1/2 2

• J(y) = (y π ) (π y )
J 0 (y) = πy π−1 π y + π y ln(π)y π

2. (5 pts) Given a car is traveling with a velocity given by v(t) = 30t2 meters per second t
seconds after the start of a race. How far does the car travel in the first 5 seconds?
30 3 5
Z 5
v(t) dt = t = 10 53 − 03 = 1250 meters

Distance =
0 3 0
The car travels 1025 meters in the first 5 seconds.

3. (5 pts) Find the value of the argument A such that the expression

2 log8 (x) + 6 log8 (z) − log8 (6y)

is of the form log8 (A).

2 log8 (x) + 6 log8 (z) − log8 (6y) = log8 (x2 ) + log8 (z 6 ) − log8 (6y)
= log8 x2 z 6 − log8 (6y)

 2 6
x z x2 z 6
= log8 =⇒ A =
6y 6y
4. (10 pts) Suppose that the daily cost , in dollars of producing x radios is

C(x) = 0.002x3 + 0.1x2 + 35x + 300

and currently 43 radios are produced daily.

(a) What is the current daily cost? Here we consider C(43). This gives the current daily
production cost to produce 43 radios is $2148.91.
(b) What is the marginal cost when x = 43? Here we look at the derivative of the cost
function to give us the marginal cost:

C 0 (x) = 0.01x2 + 0.2x + 35

C 0 (c) = 54.69
When c radios are being produced the marginal cost is $54.69 per radio.
(c) Interpret the meaning of the marginal cost when 43 radios are produced daily. The
marginal cost gives the additional cost that would be incurred if the production was
increased from 43 radios to 44 radios. In this instance the cost would increase by $54.69.

5. (8 pts) Given an investment opportunity with compound continuous interest will double in
13 years time. What is the interest rate of the investment? If the initial amount invested is
$7000, how long will it take for the investment to be worth $1,000,000?
Here we know that the investment is governed by:

A(t) = P ert

Given the problem information we know that by setting P to be the initial investment:

2P = P er13

Divide both sides by P and take the natural log to obtain:

1
ln(2) = ln(e13r ) =⇒ 13r = ln(2) =⇒ r = ln(2)/13 ≈ log (2)
13
The investment has an interest rate of 5.3319 % compounded continuously. To see how long
it will take the investment to be worth $1,000,000 we need to consider:
1000
1000000 = 7000e0.0533t =⇒ = e0.0533t
7
1000
=⇒ ln = 0.0533t
7
13 log 1000

7
=⇒ t =
log (2)

It would take approximately 93.06 years for the investment to reach the $1,000,000 mark.
6. (20 pts) Given that a function has the derivative:

f 0 (x) = x2 + 16x + 55

(a) Find the intervals on which the function f (x) is increasing and decreasing.
Note that we can factor f 0 (x) = (x + 5)(x + 11). This gives the critical points of f (x)
are x = −5 and x = −11. As f 0 (x) is a parabola with a positive coefficient on the x2
term we know that

f (x) is increasing when x ∈ (−∞, −11) and x ∈ (−5, ∞)

f (x) is decreasing when x ∈ (−11, −5).

(b) List and classify the critical points of the function as relative maximums and minimums.
The function has critical points when x = −5 and x = −11. Noting the intervals on
which the first derivative (given above) is increasing and decreasing allows us to classify
these critical points.
• x = −11 is a local maximum.
• x = −5 is a local minimum.

(c) On what intervals is the function concave up?

Using the second derivative we find the concavity of f .

f 00 (x) = 2x + 16

Setting f 00 (x) = 0 we see that 2x = −16 =⇒ x = −8 is the place that f has a change in
concavity, and f 00 (x) > 0 when x > −8. The function is concave up for x > −8.
(d) If f (x) has an inflection point at what x value does it occur?
The function has an inflection point at x = −8 changing from concave down for values
of x less than −8, to concave up for values of x larger than −8.
(e) Sketch the shape of f (x) labeling the critical points and points of inflection if there are
any.
One possible sketch of f is given by:

8. (8 pts) Given the following diagram find the area of lake Chrispell.

Here we integrate the following function over the interval form 1 to 4.

Z 4 3 4
−x 5x2
f (x) dx = + − 4x
1 3 2 1
9

The area of Lake Chrispell is 2 square units. Note no units are specified in the diagram. So
we assume a non-dimensional ‘unit’.
