Introduction- rahul

The lesson is based on the days of the franco Prussian war in which Prussia
defeated france and the French districts of Alsace and Lorraine passed into the
Prussian hands . this led to an order that stated the use of german language in
school of Alsace and Lorraine replacing French being passed .the lesson
portrays the effect that this order had on the children, teachers and the general
public.
Summary – parmeet
The story is narrated by a French boy, Franz who dislikes the French language.
After capturing the districts of Alsace and Lorraine in France, Berlin has
ordered that German language instead of French be taught in the schools there.
It is the last day of their French teacher M. Hamel, who has been there for forty
years. He had deep respect and regard for his mothertongue - the French
language and he embraced his french identity. He felt that being close to one's
values and culture makes one feel liberated. He had been providing faithful
service for forty years and was forced that day to give his last lesson.
Franz is shocked to know that it’s his last lesson, as he does not know French.
Now, suddenly, he gets interested in learning it and understands everything
taught on that day. He develops an instant liking and respect for the teacher, M.
Hamel . Even the villagers came to the class to thank M. Hamel for his service
& show their respect for their motherland. on hearing the last lesson , they felt
that they were able to understand everything & regreted that they didn't focus on
learning their own language earlier.
M. Hamel tells them that they all are at fault for not being eager enough to
learn, putting it off to the next day. He blames himself for not teaching them
sincerely.
His patriotism is reflected in his praise for the French language as being the
most beautiful and most logical language in the world and asked the children to
protect their French identity. The Last Lesson’ highlights that humans have a
tendency to procrastinate and believe that there is always plenty of time to do
things leading them to postpone the lessons of life, but, they are unaware of the
fact that life is subject to change.

Message- siddhi
The main message that the lesson depicts is to never let go of one’s identity.
Just like m. hamel had deep respect and admiration for his mother tongue and
motherland, one should always embrace his or her cultural and national identity
and be close to their values. As truly stated in the lesson, when people are
enslaved , as long as they hold fast to their language it is as if they had the key
to their prison. At the end of the class M.hamel wrote on the blackboard the
words “ vive la france” that translates to “ long live france” to remind the
children to never let their national spirit die.
Title- nakul
The title "The Last Lesson is really appropriate as the central theme on the
chapter revolves around the emotional experience that the day of the last French
lesson that the schools of Alsace and Lorraine had was. M. hamel had been
teaching French for 40 years and had impacted many lives and when suddenly
he was forced to stop teaching French and give his last lesson . everyone had a
great revelation on how important every French class and specially that last
lesson was.
Character sketch- aditriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
M. Hamel was a dedicated teacher yet a sensitive and understanding human
being. Although he was strict, when the day of the last- lesson arrived, he held
himself along with the children and the parents responsible for not having the
children learn their own mother tongue. He had deep respect for his french
values & held france in high regard. He was an experienced teacher who
provided 40 years of faithful service to the school. At the day of the last lesson
he taught the children In a way that it felt that he wanted to put all his
knowledge of french into the minds of the children and pass on his values &
culture: He was so emotional that day that he couldn't even give a last speech or
message to his children and just gestured with his hand that the class was
dismissed. He was Just staring at the room and the things in it so that he
wouldn't forget them or the school. As a symbol of his patriotism, he wrote on
the blackboard Vive La france ( Long live France ) and taught his students to
never let go of their french values or identity.
