Participant will typically squeeze 3x, then the average is

calculated using the measurements from both hands.
Correlation between hand grip and hand width?
Question: Is there a correlation between hand grip and hand width?
Variables: Hand grip & Hand width
Test Used: Graph comparing both variables
- Used to find the correlation between handgrip and hand width within both
male and female.
- Data pairs that did not correspond to an individual (eg one of two left
blank, or data ordered numerically) were deleted; there were still more
than enough data points to meet the threshold for the test conditions
Results

- The correlation between

hand width and hand grip
was slightly positive.
- Suggests that they do
indeed correlate with each
other.

- Slope of the correlation:

0.0436
- R2 value = 0.3561
- 35.6% of the variation in
hand grip can be accounted
for by the variation in hand
width in this model
Hand width differences between sexes

Question: How Test used: T-test

much wider are assuming unequal
men’s hands than variance (because females
women’s? outnumber males)
Variables: Hand Null hypothesis: there is no
width and sex. difference in the average
hand width between men and
women
Results
The difference in hand width
between the sexes is
statistically significant.
P was 2.2897 x 10 ^ -36,
which is smaller than .05 (a lot
smaller!)
The null hypothesis was not
supported.
The data visualization
here shows how male
hand width is larger than
female hand width.
Width in cm
Note how the range for
men’s hands appears
bigger, even as their
sample size was smaller.

Width in cm
Significance of hand
length differences
between sexes
Variables used: Hand length, sex

Null hypothesis: There is no

difference between the hand
length of males and females.

Results: The t-test calculation

revealed there may be a
statistical significance.

The p-value of 1.8196E-08 is

smaller than our alpha of .05.
Do women and men differ more in hand length or width?
For which is there more of a difference?

P value for difference in hand width: 2.2897 x 10 ^-36

P value for difference in hand length: 1.8196 x 10 ^-8
These P values, which reflect the odds of getting the result due to random
chance, are different. The smaller p-value, for hand width difference, shows
men and women differ more in hand width than hand length.

Comparison of p-values is possible as both sets of data have almost the exact
same sample size.
Handgrip Strength
● Could potentially be
considered markers of
nutritional & health status,
physical fitness, and sex
of individuals.
● Other predictors for
handgrip strength: age,
height, weight, and
occupation...and
apparently geographic
ancestry.
Conclusion!

Our interpretation of these findings is that this

information lends supporting evidence that humans

are indeed a sexually dimorphic species. We learned

that the degree of sexual dimorphism varies by trait

and our analysis allowed us to gain a far better

understanding the impact of sex on both physical

size and human strength.
