“MARIA DE LAS PERLAS”

This costume is a reflection of the rich religious and cultural beliefs and traditions of the
municipality of Baler. The wing like sabutan sleeves is a representation of the Phoenix
or Sarimanok, a Philippine mythology bird like creature that symbolizes power, freedom
and compassion. Just like the modern day Balerianos, free- spirited human beings, yet
they remain steadfast amidst calamities and challenges. The headpiece was created as
a portrayal of Faith and devotion of Balerianos to the holy virgin Nuestra Señora Dela
Ermita. The costume is accentuated with coconut shells which symbolizes the coconut
farming as one of the agricultural product of baler. Furthermore, this masterpiece is
flourish by fresh water pearls and precious stones which signifies Baler as a treasure
from the north.
