Preface

This manual was written for Customers who own or intend to purchase the Hexagon Manufacturing
Intelligence (Hexagon in the rest of this manual) GLOBAL S measuring machines.

This document provides the measuring machine owner with the information required to set up the area
where the measuring machine will be installed. It also indicates the machine crate sizes and weights and
the size and bearing capacities of the lifting equipment used to move the machine into the facility and to
its site. Details about overall dimensions, the environment and handling procedures are given for all of the
measuring machine’s models, and options.

In addition, this document indicates the tools and accessories that the Customer is to provide on the
installation site so that the Hexagon staff can install and test the measuring machine safely and efficiently.

You may print as many copies of this copyrighted manual as desired for

Documentation Provided with the Measuring Machine
The information provided with the measuring machine offers a wide range of solutions for getting to know
and using its functions. The measuring machine comes with a compact disc or thumb drive containing the
following documentation.
Site Preparation Manual

Provides the Customer with all the necessary information for identifying the requirements to be met on the
installation site of the measuring machine. This document specifies the environmental, electrical and
pneumatic requirements for the installation of the machine, and contains instructions on how to receive,
handle and store the shipping crates. It also indicates the tools and accessories that the Customer is to
provide to the Hexagon staff responsible for installing the machine.
User Manual

Contains essential information on how to use the measuring machine safely and efficiently. The manual
includes a detailed description of the measuring machine, the instructions for use, and the routine
maintenance procedures recommended by Hexagon.
Use and Maintenance of the Measuring System – General Safety Regulations

This document was written for owners of a Hexagon measuring system; it contains the general safety
regulations that users and preventive maintenance engineers must know and follow in order to use and
maintain the measuring system safely.

of the national, local and company safety regulations.

Prior to CMM Arrival
For your own benefit and to avoid delays, take these steps before we ship your CMM:

Appoint a project manager

All successful installations have someone responsible for coordinating the internal aspects of the project
while the machine is being built. The project manager should be the key customer contact for the local
sales representative and Hexagon.

Seek a thermally stable location

Fluctuations or extremes in temperature may cause mechanical components to grow and shrink, affecting
machine accuracy. Avoid locations near heat sources, refrigeration units or drafts such as near doors or
windows. See specifications for requirements. Contact a Hexagon representative if you have any
questions.

Avoid exposure to direct sunlight

Indirect or fluorescent lighting is preferred, assuming it provides sufficient illumination. Avoid light from
windows directly on the machine.

Minimize vibration

Place machine on a rigid level floor. The floor should be as vibration free as possible. While the electronic
and mechanical components of the machine are extremely stable, excessive vibration may cause
measuring and reading errors. The foundation must support machine's weight plus the parts being
measured. The machine should not straddle floor cracks or seams; this might subject the machine to
differential motion affecting repeatability. Please see specific requirements below and if vibration issues
are suspected, please contact Hexagon regarding a vibration site survey.

Promote cleanliness

Contamination may shorten machine life and affect accuracy. Ideally, select an area away from
machining centers in order to minimize exposure to dirt, dust, oil, mist, coolant, chips, and other
contaminants. Thoroughly clean the machine site, giving special attention to the area for base. It's
important that the bearings and scales are kept clean. Always leave rigid and/or flexible guards in place
over X-beam, Y-guideways and X-Z-carriage.

Complete the Site Prep Checklist

Conduct a site preparation survey and complete and return the Site Prep Checklist, a companion
document to this manual. Please have this manual readily available while completing the checklist and
considering your proposed installation site.

Overview

This chapter provides a brief description of the measuring machine and a measuring system.

The GLOBAL S Measuring Machine
GLOBAL S is a family of measuring machines with Cartesian axes, a gantry architecture and a vertical Z-
rail. The machine is available in several versions that differ from one another in precision and
performance.

The accuracy and performance features increase from the GREEN to BLUE to CHROME version.

Models characterized by different working volumes are available for each version.

The GLOBAL S measuring machine is characterized by the speed and precision best suited for the type
of use for which it was designed: point-to-point measurement and continuous measurement of small and
medium sized parts

The GLOBAL S may be characterized by standard or high working speed.

The fixed part of the measuring machine consists of the granite work table on the surface of which are
machined guideways along which the main carriage runs and the threaded holes for securing the part to
be measured. The work top rests on independent supports.

On the work table runs the main carriage (Y axis), made up of a beam and two legs (left and right).

The central carriage runs along the beam of the main carriage (X axis).

The rail (or column) is assembled inside the central carriage and moves perpendicular to the floor (Z axis).

The bridge structure ensures optimal rigidity so that, under normal environmental conditions, the GLOBAL
S machine can be installed directly on the floor.

All the measuring machine axes are equipped with a motor; the movement of the axes is always
supervised by the control system and can be controlled by the measuring software or the user by means
of the Jogbox (NJB) portable terminal.

Various types of probe heads and probes may be assembled on the flange of the column. There is also a
wide range of accessories and options.

According to its version and model, the GLOBAL measuring machine interfaces with and is controlled
either by a DC241, DC800C, or by a DC800 I/O-Ready control system.

The machine family has particular features which provide high performance in terms of speed and
accuracy combined with machine management functions aimed at saving energy consumption.

SCAN PILOT technology optimizes complex profile scanning.

FLY2 MODE technology optimizes trajectories, making machine movements


more streamline and reducing the time needed to run measurement
programmes.

The machine switches off when it is not active and remains ready to resume
operations when needed to reduce running costs and decrease mechanical
stress on the machine without negatively influencing use times, speed or
performance.

Eco Mode + technology (optional) is used to interrupt the compressed air flow
during periods of inactivity.

Compass is an advanced and innovative system which uses physical


hardware components and enhanced firmware algorithms to reduce and
compensate for the machine’s intrinsic vibrations and any impact on results.
Available on the CHROME version only.

According to the version and model, a workstation integrating the Personal Computer, a monitor and a
work top for keyboard and mouse may be available. See the User Manual for more information.

Messaging Lights

The Messaging Lights LED indicator kit (optional) can be used to monitor machine state at a distance
from the measuring station.

Thermal Compensation System

The thermal compensation system is of the multisensor type.

The temperature sensors are positioned inside the measuring machine on the axes, table and beam. In
addition, the user is provided with an external sensor that is to be applied to the workpiece to be
measured when the thermal compensation system is active.

Due to its intrinsic characteristics and the number of sensors applied to the machine, the thermal
compensation system ensures maximum measuring performance in a broad temperature range.

When the thermal compensation system is active, the control system corrects the measurements made by
the measuring machine on the basis of the temperature values measured by the sensors.
PULSE

The PULSE system (optional) is used to monitor and record ambient condition by detecting events
occurring during machine use (crashes, vibrations, exceeding of temperature and humidity limits, and air
supply pressure, etc.).

It consists of vibration, temperature, humidity, air supply pressure and crash sensors connected to the PC
via a USB port and a dedicated module network.

The data collected by the sensors in the kit are made available for later event analysis and immediately
indicate the occurrence of operating irregularities to the operator.

Intended Use and Unauthorized Use


GLOBAL S is a low-power machine designed and built to measure small to medium-sized parts used in
the mechanical industry. It automatically moves a lightweight, contact or non-contact measuring tool,
according to the programmed cycle executed to measure a part placed on its work table.

The measuring machine is not to be used for any machining processes other than measurements and is
not to be fitted with any tools other than those designed for use with it without prior authorization from
Hexagon. It is not to be used, for example, to move or lift parts, to mill, or to measure parts of the human
body.

The measuring machine may only be used in an industrial environment that has been suitably prepared
and protected.

Warning
Any changes to the measuring machine and, more in general, to the
measuring system not authorized by Hexagon, may make the machine
dangerous, will make the guarantee offered by Hexagon null and void and
result in the company declining all liability for any damage caused by it.

The Measuring System
When a GLOBAL S measuring machine is installed, all the other components making up the Hexagon
measuring system are also installed. These components must be interconnected to one another and to
the electrical and air supply systems of the installation site.

Figure 4 and Figure 5 are examples illustrating the components of a measuring system based on a
GLOBAL S measuring machine and DC800C or DC800 I/O-Ready control system.

installation site (cables A, B, C, D and E are supplied by Hexagon):
 The hoses connecting the pneumatic control unit of the measuring machine to the air supply
system of the installation site.

 The cable connecting the control system to the measuring machine (cable A). This cable also
supplies electrical power to the measuring machine.

 The cable connecting the control system to the electrical power supply (cable B).

 The cable connecting the control system to the Personal Computer (cable C).

 The cable connecting the Jogbox to the measuring machine (cable D).

 The power cable connecting the IEC320 power strip to the electrical power supply (cable E). The
power strip is fixed to and powers the workstation: Personal Computer, PC monitor and printer.

Perimeter Protective Systems

Figure 4, Figure 5, Figure 6 and Figure 7 show the measuring system without any guards covering the
area where the measuring machine operates (danger zone).

The final decision as to what kind of system should be used to control access to the danger zone is made
by the Customer. In order to determine the most suitable protective system, the Customer should take into
consideration the indications given by Hexagon, the local safety legislation in force, the characteristics of
the installation site and the Customers own specific application needs.

Preventing access to the work area

Figure 8 shows the measuring system without any guards covering the area where the measuring
machine operates.

High-speed GLOBAL S measuring machines can be outfitted with optional laser scanner devices to
prevent access to the operating area of the machine. These devices work by automatically limiting or
interrupting measuring machine operation in case of unexpected access to the protected area.

Installation Requirements

The measuring system and, in particular, the measuring machine, must be installed and operated in a
place that satisfies all the requirements specified in this chapter.

Read this chapter carefully to identify these requirements and set up the installation site accordingly.

Warning
Failure to respect even just one of the requirements specified in this chapter
may not only cause the measuring system to malfunction but also increase
the risks of overturning, tripping, collision, crushing and piercing described in
the User Manual to an unacceptable level.

Safety Requirements
Using the measuring system safely

A Hexagon measuring system may be used safely when the Customer has:
 Satisfied all the requirements indicated in this chapter during installation of the measuring
system.

 Taken measures to reduce or eliminate the risks declared in the Site Preparation Manual, User
Manual and the General Safety Regulations Manual for the measuring machine in use.

 Taken measures to reduce or eliminate the risks declared in the Site Preparation Manual and the
User Manual for the site specific installation.

 Taken measures necessary to prevent inadequately instructed staff from inadvertently gaining
access to the measuring machine while it is powered.

 Adequately instruct the users, paying particular attention to the risks, declared in the Site
Preparation Manual, User Manual, and General Safety Regulations Manual so they know how to
use all components of the measuring machine safely. Contact Hexagon to schedule training, PC-
DMIS classes are available.

Risk analysis for the specific installation

Before installing the measuring system, the Customer must conduct a careful and complete analysis of
the risks for the specific installation. This analysis must take into account not only the hazards presented
by the components of the measuring system supplied by Hexagon but also aspects associated with the
specific installation, such as:
 Requirements laid down by national, local and company laws and standards.

 Methods of installation; characteristics of the installation site.

 Methods of use and any other risks created by interaction between the components of the
measuring system and any other installations and machines present on the installation site.

The risk analysis conducted for the specific installation will enable the Customer to determine all the
measures to be taken to make the measuring system safe to use and maintain. In particular, the risk
analysis may be used to determine whether the danger zone around the measuring machine is to be
protected by an active or passive system in accordance with the Hexagon recommendations.

Vibrations on the Installation Site (Direct Support on the Floor)

The floor on industrial areas is constantly subject to vibrations which originate from all kinds of sources:
presses, power hammers, machine tools, means of transport, lifting devices and any machinery that
transmits vibrations along the floor. These vibrations may directly influence the performance of the
machine, thus leading to measuring errors. The metrological performance of the measuring machine is
only ensured if the values of the acceleration due to the vibrations present on the floor of the installation
site lie below the limit curve in the following figure for all frequency values indicated.

Caution
The Customer is responsible for measuring the vibration values on the
installation site and taking all necessary corrective action to ensure that these
values remain within the limits laid down.

When the vibrations at the installation site exceed the values specified, suitable measures must be taken
to keep the vibrations within the required limits to guarantee the metrological performance of the
measuring machine. These measures include laying concrete foundations or cuts in the floor or using
active anti-vibration supports (optional). If in doubt, a vibration survey is recommended. Please contact
your Hexagon representative to schedule a site vibration survey.

customer’s needs but also on the basis of the indications contained in the technical documents
accompanying the measuring machine and in respect of the guidelines specified below.

Size of the Installation Site

The installation site must be sufficiently large to permit all installation operations as well as all operations
performed during normal working and maintenance activities. In particular, plan accurately the amount of
room the user needs to access the worktable, the pneumatic control unit, the control system, and the
personal computer on which the measuring software is installed.

Figure 22 and Figure 23 specifies the minimum spaces to be left free around the measuring machine with
a DC800C or DC800 I/O-Ready Control System. These spaces have been calculated on the basis of the
general requirements for the use and maintenance of the measuring machine and in respect of the
international safety standards.

Size of the Installation Site with Optional Laser Scanner System

During automatic operation of the high speed version of the machine, the laser scanner system defines
two protection areas around the machine (external and internal), having different dimensions.

See the user instruction manual of the DC800 I/O-Ready control system for a description of the operation
of the laser scanner system in case of unexpected access to protected areas.

The dimensions of the protected areas can be programmed during installation (by Hexagon) and must not
be smaller than those shown on the following table.

User-Defined Layout

The Customer may arrange the components of the measuring system in a different layout from the
reference layout. In this case, however, careful consideration must be given to the length of the cables
supplied by Hexagon (see “Electrical Cables and Connections” on page 50) and the positions of the
connectors in which these cables are inserted (see “Reference Layout”).

The necessary amount of free space must always be left around the measuring machine. The system’s
control panel must be easily accessible during the normal working activities.

In order to define the layout of the measuring system, the Customer should follow the safety indications
given in “Reference Layout of the Measuring System” and “Size of the Installation Site”, and consider the
type of protective system used to block access to the danger zone.

Electrical Cables and Connections

The cables supplied by Hexagon are only guaranteed against accidental treading. Consequently, where
necessary and appropriate, the Customer must adequately cover the cables used to connect the control
system to the other components of the measuring system and the electrical system.

The Customer is therefore responsible for taking all the necessary measures to prevent the cables, in
particular the power cables, from interfering with the installation, use and maintenance of the measuring
machine.

If necessary, pass the cables in chase ducts or cover them with footboards having a trapezoidal cross
section. Never pass the cables along thoroughfares or where there is a risk of water or oil infiltration.

Power cables not adequately positioned or protected create a risk of tripping
and electrocution as described in the User Manual.

The Customer must take all necessary measures to ensure that the humidity and temperature
requirements are constantly respected on the installation site and around the measuring machine. In
particular, the Customer must make sure that the requirements for optimum measuring precision are
satisfied during the use of the measuring machine.

Tips for Controlling the Temperature and Humidity

To keep the temperature and humidity within the limits in which the correct functioning of the measuring
machine and, more in general, the measuring system is guaranteed, we recommend you:
 Avoid installing the machine near heat sources of any kind.

 Avoid installing the measuring machine close to windows, doors, air-conditioning system outlets
and areas exposed to draughts.

 Avoid exposing the measuring machine to the direct sunlight and artificial lighting.

The Customer is responsible for:
 Providing on the installation site an air supply source that meets the requirements of the
measuring machine and any other components of the measuring system that require an air
supply.

 Setting up the hoses for connecting the measuring system to the air supply source.

 Taking all the necessary measures to prevent the hoses from interfering with the installation, use
and maintenance of the measuring machine and creating hazardous situations.

 Take all the necessary measures to prevent the components of the air supply system, in
particular the cables, from interfering with the installation, use and maintenance of the measuring
machine and creating hazardous situations.

Warning
Pneumatic tubes not adequately positioned and protected create a tripping
risk as described in the User Manual.

Characteristics of Hose Connection

The pneumatic control unit of the measuring machine has a connection for a calibrated polyamide or
polyurethane hose with an outside diameter of 8 mm (inside 6 mm).

Notice
US only connect to 1/4 in. barbed fitting.

The Customer is responsible for taking all the necessary steps to ensure that the air supply cables do not
obstruct or make hazardous the installation, maintenance and use of the measuring machine.

Quality of Compressed Air

The quality of the compressed air (provided by the Customer) to supply the measuring machine must
comply with the specifications laid down in the ISO 8573-1 standard (classes 4, 5 and 6).

If the compressed air available does not satisfy the requirements, we
recommend the use of a filtering unit, above the pneumatic control unit,
consisting of a 0.05 mm primary filter, an oil-proof filter and, where
appropriate, a drier.

Connecting to the Electrical Power Supply System


The Customer is responsible for setting up a suitable electrical supply system and making sure that the
power supplied to the components of the measuring system meets the requirements specified in this
section.

The Customer must also take all the necessary measures to make sure that the cables connecting the
measuring system to the power supply source do not interfere with the installation, use and maintenance
of the measuring machine.

Warning
Power cables not adequately positioned or protected create a risk of tripping
and electrocution as described in the User Manual.

We recommend a protected, dedicated branch be set up with two sockets for connecting the control
system and the peripheral devices (the measuring machine is powered by the control system).

Requirements for the Electrical Power Supply of the Measuring System

All Components of the Measuring System (Except PC and Peripherals)

The power supplied to the components of the measuring system (except PC and peripherals) must
conform to the EN 60204-1 standard and, therefore, must satisfy the following requirements:
 Supply shall not be interrupted or drop to zero voltage for any more than 3 milliseconds at any
time in the supply cycle in which at least 1 second must pass between consecutive interruptions.

 Voltage drops will not exceed 20% of the peak voltage of the supply for more than one cycle in
which there must be more than 1 second between consecutive interruptions.

 The variation in the input voltage must not be more than +/-10% with respect to the ratings.

Voltage stabilizer! If even just one of the requirements listed above is not respected, all the components
of the measuring system must be connected to a voltage stabilizer.

To ensure the correct size of the electrical power system, the Customer must also consider that the
instantaneous current absorption at power-on by the components of the measuring system (in particular,
the control system) may reach a maximum value equivalent to 20 times the sum of the rated current
absorption values of each device.

Requirements for the PC and Peripherals

The power supply requirements of the PC and its peripherals are often more restrictive than those of the
remaining components of the measuring system. For this reason, according to the electrical
characteristics of these devices, it may be necessary to connect the PC and its peripherals to a voltage
stabilizer or a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) device even when this is not necessary for the other
components of the measuring system.

A good general rule is, however, to supply the PC and its peripherals with a line dedicated exclusively to
the computer devices and not shared with industrial machinery.

Grounding the System

The electrical connection set up by the Customer must include a wire for the grounding connection and
must satisfy the following requirements:
 The power sockets to which the components of the measuring system are to be connected must
be connected to the grounding system.

 The grounding system must be suited to the purpose and the ground connection must not cause
damage to or interference with the components of the measuring system.

A safe and effective ground connection immune to conducted interference is normally obtained by
connecting the ground wires of the measuring system directly to an equipotential node and by avoiding to
connect it in a cascade with other devices, in particular with powerful machines.

It should also be kept in mind that, according to the commonly-used electrical standards, the electrical
resistance between the system and the ground must be below a limit value coordinated with the value of
the circuit breaker with the highest activation current value.
Maximum Power Consumption

The table below shows the maximum power consumed by the components of the Hexagon measuring
system that require a power supply. According to the actual configuration of the measuring system, the
Customer may use the data indicated in the table to determine the maximum power consumption of the
measuring system and size the electrical power supply source accordingly.

Electromagnetic Emission and Immunity
Electromagnetic Interference Emissions

All the components of a Hexagon measuring system conform to the limits laid down by the EN61000-6-4
standard on electromagnetic interference emissions in industrial environments.
Immunity against Electromagnetic Interference

The Customer is responsible for taking the necessary corrective action if the measuring system or any of
its components are subject to electromagnetic fields with an intensity exceeding the allowed limit.

Although the measuring system was designed to operate in industrial environments, we recommend you
avoid installing it near machinery that creates strong electrical or magnetic fields, such as power
disconnects, transformer cabinets, electric cables (busways), electric discharge machines, high frequency
ovens, arc and resistance welding machines, or near droplights and ground plates of lightning-conductor
systems.

Warning
Any electromagnetic disturbance that considerably exceeds that laid down by
the regulations creates a risk of uncontrolled movement by the machine.
Measuring Components

Measuring machines and devices supplied by Hexagon function correctly if the electromagnetic
interference to which they are subject remains within the limits laid down in the EN61000-6-2 standard (on
immunity of machinery to electromagnetic interference in industrial environments).

In particular, for immunity to low-frequency magnetic fields, measuring components have been tested by
exposing them to a magnetic field of 50/60 Hz with 30 Amps/m = 8 µTesla (1A/m corresponds to an
induction in free space of 26 µTesla). This is therefore the maximum value within which Hexagon
guarantees the efficient functioning of its products.

PC and Peripherals

For information on the degree of protection of the personal computer and the peripherals connected to it
(monitor and printer) against electrical interference, see the manufacturer’s documentation.

Protection system preventing access to the work area
The protection system for preventing access to the work area depends on the speed characterising the
machine:
 high speed;

 standard speed.

In case of high speed machines, to guarantee maximum safety during use, the measuring system can be
equipped with the laser scanner devices which prevents contact with the moving parts of the measuring
machine when operating at high speed.

Protective System Controlling Access to the Danger zone


In order to guarantee maximum safety during use of the measuring machine, the perimeter of the danger
zone around the measuring machine can be covered by guards or marked with signs. The guards should
be set at a distance so as to prevent contact with the moving parts of the measuring machine when
operating at high speed.
Types of Protective System

The system controlling access to the danger zone may be of the active or passive type, the former of
which automates interruption of the measuring machine but is more expensive.

Active protective system

Active protection means a system capable of automatically limiting or interrupting operation of the
measuring machine in case of unexpected accesses to the protected area.

The actions taken by an active protection system when the designated zone is entered depend not only
on the type of violation but also on the current status of the measuring system, normally indicated by
special signs (for example, luminous columns and/or lamps).

Hexagon offers optional protective systems based on laser sensors, optical barriers and boundary
enclosures with interlocked ports/gates. Alternatively, in agreement with Hexagon, the Customer may use
third-party protective systems.

In any case, the protective devices must be installed and tested in accordance with the specific
instructions provided.

Warning
The installations must be concluded by the installing technician by testing the
scanner laser system or the active protection system in its various modes
(decelerating, stopping), in general. The Customer must check the active
protection system operating steps and sign for acceptance.
No changes to the protection of the system are permitted unless they are agreed with Hexagon. Changes
may concern, for example, dimensioning of the safety areas or positioning of the optional laser scanners.

Passive protective system

A passive protection system is made up exclusively of passive elements (for example, boundary chains or
coloured tapes on the floor) whose function is to mark off and highlight the area. The highlighted or
marked off area must have a minimum depth of 500 mm (19.7 in).

A passive protection system must always come with suitable warning signs and signals. Where
necessary, the system’s status is indicated by appropriate signals (for example, luminous columns)

The Customer must make sure that there are no passageways frequently used by staff inside or in the
immediate vicinity of the danger zone of the machine. If there are, they must be shifted or suitable guards,
warning signs and safety signals are to be set up.
How to Determine the Most Appropriate Type of Protective System

The Customer must determine the type – active or passive – and the characteristics of the system for
controlling access to the danger zone considering:
 National, local and company safety regulations in force

 Characteristics of the installation site

 Characteristics of the model of measuring machine in use

 Type of protective system – active or passive – recommended by Hexagon (see Table 21)

 Specific functional and operational needs

 Risk analysis for the specific installation.

The following table may be used to determine the type of protection to be used.

Other Requirements
The Customer is responsible for respecting the requirements specified in the following sections.
Cleanliness

The measuring system must be installed and used in an environment that is clean, free of abrasive
powders, paint and oil suspensions.

For information on the classification, characteristics, planning, construction and operation of a test room,
see the VDI/VDE 2627 guideline.
Lighting

The measuring system must be installed and used in an environment that has adequate sources of
lighting so that the system may be installed, used and maintained under conditions of absolute safety.

Warning
Insufficient or inadequate lighting increases the tripping, collision, piercing
and crushing risks described in the User Manual.

Safety Signs

The measuring system should be fitted with appropriate safety signs on the basis of the laws applied
locally to prevent the risk of injury to persons and damage to things during operation of the moving parts
of the measuring system and any other moving component operating in the installation environment and
interacting with the measuring system.
Environments with Special Safety Requirements

Unless agreed otherwise, Hexagon measuring systems cannot be installed and used in work
environments with special safety requirements.

For example, the use of a Hexagon measuring system in environments where there is a risk of an
explosion, in other words, in environments subject to the ATEX Directive, is strictly prohibited.
Noise

The weighted equivalent continuous sound pressure generated by the measuring machine is less than 70
dB (A). No particular precautions are therefore required to protect the user from noise generated by a
Hexagon measuring system.

When the control system is equipped with a ventilation or air-conditioning device, avoid installing the
user’s work station close to this device.
An Eco-Friendly Measuring Machine

The GLOBAL S measuring machine is made up of recyclable materials in a percentage of 99%.

The GLOBAL S measuring machine contains no lead and its electrolytic coatings contain no hexavalent
chromium, lead, cadmium or mercury.

In particular, in accordance with Directive 2002/62/EC, the ABS sheets contain no organic tin compounds
such as TBT (Tributyltin) or TPT (Triphenyltin).

Managing Crates

The measuring machine is delivered to the Customer packed in special shipping crates.

Follow the instructions given in this chapter to receive, move and store the crates correctly.

Caution
Do not open the crates. If the crates are opened before installation without
express authorization from Hexagon, the guarantees will be considered null
and void.

Contents, Dimensions and Weights of the Crates
Before shipping, the measuring machine is disassembled and the components are packed in wooden
crates. The parts inside the crates are fixed by beams, which prevent them from moving during transport.

The contents of each crate is sealed in an airtight plastic case. The case contains bags of hygroscopic
salts to absorb any moisture forming as a result of condensation. The hygroscopic salt bags do not
contain SILICA-GEL or dimethyl fumarate.
Special shipping brackets hold machine components in place. The CMM cannot be used with brackets
attached.

Receiving and Storing the Crates
On reception of the crates, the Customer must check their state. If they are damaged, the Customer must
immediately report the problems found to Hexagon and the transporter, before proceeding to transport the
crates to the installation site and unpack them.

The components of the measuring machine must be stored with the crate.

Temporary storage of the crates must always take place in an indoor area which ensures a sufficient
degree of environmental protection (in a dry and covered room), bearing in mind that:
 The storage temperature must be between 0°C (32° F) and 50°C (122° F).

 The relative humidity must be less than 75%.

Caution
When the conditions listed above are satisfied, the measuring machine will be
effectively protected by its packaging for a period of two months. The
measuring machine must therefore be installed within two months of the date
on which the packages are received and, in any case, no later than the date
stamped on the crates. After this date, Hexagon declines all liability for any
damage caused by storage exceeding the terms indicated.

Check that the surfaces on which the packages rest have a bearing capacity sufficient to withstand the
weight during the storage time.

Moving the Crates


To lift and transport the crates, the Customer may use a bridge crane or a crane and a lift truck having a
capacity sufficient to enable it to lift the weight of the crate to be moved and wire lines of a suitable
capacity and length (see Table 23 Dimensions and Weights of Crates).

Caution
Avoid applying excessive pressure to the crates with stay rods, steel wire
lines or belts wound all the way round the crate. During transport, avoid
collisions and knocks that could damage the contents of the crates.

Caution
The packages should be moved and transported in respect of the following
safety specifications:
 Before lifting and moving loads, see the safety standards in force at the company where you are
working and ask your Safety Manager for instructions. Follow these instructions strictly when
performing the lifting and transporting operations.

 As well as having an adequate bearing capacity, the means of transport chosen must ensure
safe transport of the packages without any risk of overturning, collapsing or slipping (for example,
it must guarantee safe transport of the packages even on sloping surfaces).

 Considering the total weight to be transported (weight of the crates plus weight of the means of
transport used), check the bearing capacity of the floor of the installation site and along the entire
path, from the place of arrival to the place of installation. Even only a partial collapse of the floor
may cause hazardous unexpected events (for example, overturning or slipping) and potential
injury to persons and damage to things.

 Considering the overall dimensions (dimensions of the means of transport plus dimensions of the
crates), check that the passageways are of an adequate size. Excessively small or inadequate
passageways could entail making unexpected movements that may make the means of transport
unstable and create hazardous conditions.

Preparing for Installation

To ensure safe and efficient installation, the Customer must prepare the site and provide the installation
engineers with the tools and equipment described in this chapter.

This chapter also describes the dimensions, weights and methods for lifting and moving the parts into
which the measuring machine is disassembled at the time of delivery.

Installation Safety Specifications
The Customer is responsible for adequately preparing the installation environment, the tools and the
necessary resources (for example, lifting means, electrical and pneumatic connections) so that all
installation operations may be performed without any risk of injury to persons and damage to things and in
full respect of the national and international safety directives.

Handling Packages on the Installation Site


The crates and packages containing the components of the measuring machine must be transported by
the Customer to the installation site (for instructions, see “Moving the Crates” on page 65).

This operation should be performed at least forty-eight hours before the start of installation to ensure
sufficient thermal stabilization. In this period, and on all the following days, the ambient temperature of the
installation environment must remain above 15° C (59° F).

Caution
Check that the contents of the crates have not been damaged during
transport. If they have, inform Hexagon without delay, specifying the type of
damage.

Unpacking and Inspecting

The components of the measuring system are to be unpacked by the technical staff designated by
Hexagon in the Customer’s presence. During the unpacking phase, the Customer must check that the
contents of the crates correspond to the items present on the packing list attached to the shipping
documents. In the case of a purchase order, check that the supply also corresponds exactly to the items
ordered.
Keeping the Packages for Later Use

We recommend you keep all the packaging materials used to protect the components of the measuring
system at the time of delivery to the Customer.

In particular, the Customer must keep the original packaging material of all the components of the
measuring system subject to repair and/or overhauling at the Manufacturer’s site. The components that
are to be returned to the manufacturer, for example, for repair, must be packaged using the original
packaging material, otherwise the guarantee becomes null and void and the Manufacturer is relieved of all
responsibility. This category of components includes computers, printers and measuring heads.

We also recommend that you keep the shipping brackets of the measuring machine. They may be reused
during any future movements.

Caution
All packaging material must be stored in an indoor area which ensures a
sufficient degree of environmental protection (in a dry and covered room).

Lifting and Transporting the Measuring Machine
On the installation site, the Customer must provide all the tools (for example, a bridge crane or a crane
and a forklift truck) and accessories (cables of a suitable length and capacity) required to lift and transport
the measuring machine during unpacking and installation.

Lifting means, wire lines and other accessories to be used for lifting purposes must have a bearing
capacity suited to the weight to be lifted. For the weight and dimensions of each model, see “Overall
Dimensions and Mechanical Characteristics” on page 23.

Danger
The use of inadequate lifting equipment or different lifting points from those
indicated severely increases the risk of the measuring machine falling or
overturning.

The overall dimensions of the measuring machine components listed in this section also include the
dimensions of any shipping brackets. We recommend you use these measurements to verify whether the
components fit through the entrances to the installation site and whether the latter is sufficiently high to
allow the lifting operations to be performed.

During transport and handling, all moving parts of the measuring machine must be blocked by shipping
brackets. The brackets must not be removed until the measuring machine has been set in its final
position.

Danger
Removing the shipping brackets before moving or handling the measuring
machine will not only cause certain damage to the measuring machine but
will also create severe risks due to the unexpected movement of parts, loss of
stability and a risk of overturning.

The operations described in the following sections can only be performed if the requirements specified in
“Size of the Installation Site” on page 46 are satisfied.

Lifting

The overall dimensions and weights indicated in the table below are those of the measuring machine,
calculated considering the shipping brackets. Use this table to choose suitable wire lines and lifting
means. The data provided may be used to check the size of the door openings through which the
measuring machine will pass during the installation operations.

The GLOBAL S measuring machine may be lifted with a fork lift truck or a bridge crane, providing the
means used have a capacity suited to the weight of the measuring machine.

Lifting with a Fork Lift Truck

If the machine is complete with its bench (models 05.yy.05 and 07.yy.07), the forks of the lift truck must be
inserted under the bench itself preferably on the left side pillar.

If the machine is not assembled on the bench (models 09.yy.08, 12.yy.10 and 15.yy.10), insert the forks
must be inserted under the work table, preferably on the left leg side. To avoid damaging the work table,
place suitable protective materials between the work table and the forks (for example, rubber or wooden
pads).

Caution
Particular attention should be paid when lifting the machine with a fork lift
truck, as the thermal sensors are assembled under the granite work table.

To avoid damaging the work table, place suitable protective materials between the work table and the
forks (for example, rubber or wooden pads).

Lifting with a Bridge Crane or other Type of Crane

The crate contains the pins that are to be used to lift the machine if use is made of a bridge crane or other
type of crane; in this case, the wire lines are to be fixed to the lifting pins, and these in turn are to be
inserted in the holes present in the edges of the work table. To prevent the wire lines from damaging it
during the lifting operation, protect the work table using the four rubber-coated corner pieces. The corner
pieces are provided in the crate. Lifting pins will be provided with all measuring machines delivered to
European Customers.

After installation, cover the holes with caps.

Lifting the Main Carriage –15.yy.10 Models

The table below indicates the overall dimensions and weight of the main carriage according to the X and Z
axis strokes (the dimensions and weight include the shipment brackets). This table should be used to
choose the suitable wire lines and lifting machine.

The main carriage can be lifted with a fork lift truck or a bridge crane providing the means used have a
bearing capacity suited to the weight of the measuring machine. The lifting method to be adopted is
illustrated in the figure.

Lifting the Main Carriage with a Fork Lift Truck
The forks of the truck are to be positioned under the two lifting supports applied to the bottom of the
beam.

To avoid damage to the work table, lay protective material between the work table and the forks. For
example, rubber or wooden spacers can be used.

Lifting the Main Carriage with a Bridge Crane or Other Type of Crane
To lift the main carriage, use the four eyebolts (B) fixed to the lifting supports.

To sling the machine use wire lines with a bearing capacity suited to the weight of the element to be
moved. To hook the wire lines to the eyebolts, use a shackle with an adequate capacity.

Lifting the Bed – 15.yy.10 Models

The table below shows the dimensions and weight of the bed according to the X and Y strokes. This table
should be used to choose the suitable wire lines and lifting machine.

The bed can be lifted with a bridge or other kind of crane, providing the means used has a bearing
capacity suited to its weight. The lifting method to be adopted is illustrated in the figure.

lifting pins, and the latter are to be inserted in the holes present on the edges of the work table.

To stop the wire lines damaging it during the lifting procedure, protect the work table using the four
rubber-coated corner pieces. Lifting pins and corner protections are provided in the crate.

Installation Accessories
The Customer must also provide the following tools and accessories on the installation site:
 Step ladder with a platform for access to the top of the column. The ladder must have a height
that ensures operations may be performed under conditions of absolute safety.

 A mobile industrial vacuum (i.e. shop vac).
