ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Shri P.S. Venkataramanan is the son Late Smt. Jagadhambal and Late
Shri P.K. Sivasubramanian of Mumbai who settled down in Kashi in 1978.
Shri P.S. Venkataramanan is a Commerce Graduate. He worked in
Intelligence Bureau (Home Ministry) and State Bank of India till his
retirement in September 2020.

Since his mother was involved in translating Kashi Khand into Tamil
(which was voluminous), the author alongwith his wife Smt. Lalitha V.
desired that devotees should know the temple wise details as obtaining
in Kashi Khand. They visited over 350 temples in Kashi alongwith her
husband and family friends to collect various details and brought out
various books.

Every devotee knows Kashi as “SHIVA KSHETRAM”. But Kashi Khand

mentions more than 25 places of worship dedicated to Lord Vishnu in
Kashi. As per Kashi Khand, Lord Vishnu arrived in Kashi and undertook
intense prayers for 5000 years. Local pundits respectfully refer a portion
of Kashi as “VISHNU KASHI” also, keeping in mind the various Vishnu
temples in the holy city.

With these points in view, the author has deemed it necessary to bring
out a book exclusively highlighting various places of worship dedicated
to Lord Vishnu, their location, name of pundits available, their cell
number etc. In the long run the names of pundits and their cell numbers
may change which will be updated in the subsequent editions.

The author is known in Google and YouTube as Mission Man of Kashi

and has helped lakhs of pilgrims in their smooth conduct of Kashi Yatra.
The author alongwith his disciples Shri Dhiraj Sharma and their family are
releasing videos of temples in Kashi in YouTube in the series KASHI
TEMPLE WORSHIP. The author has a website namely varanasitemples.in
which covers over over 345 temples in Kashi.

May Lord Bindu Madhav of Kashi bless all devotees in Kashi.

INTRODUCTION

The book contains brief details of various Vishnu temples in Kashi as

enumerated in Kashi Khand, their exact location, the type of
poojas/aarties performed in the temples etc., name of the Priest in
charge of the temple alongwith his contact number.

The write up is brief, temple-wise, in a very easy to understand language

to enable the readers to get a glimpse of the temples’ details as per
Kashi Khand. The temples finding place in the book are those which find
mention in Kashi Khand.

It is an attempt to bring the details given in Purana with the practical

aspect (location of temple, approach etc.) After giving location of each
temple, the author has endeavoured to name a few other temples in the
near vicinity, so that devotees can visit those temples also and worship
the respective presiding deities.

While every effort has been made to keep the book easy to read as also
interesting, the author will certainly be pleased to receive any
suggestions from readers in this regard. The author requests the readers
to read the book, and worship as many temples as possible in Kashi so
that they can seek the blessings of Almighty Lord.

Further, the author has spared no effort to give proper details. The
author is open for any kind of correction pointed out by readers if there
is any unintentional mistake. However, he does not take any
responsibility for any unintentional mistakes.

BRIEF INTRODUCTION OF KASHI KHAND

There are eighteen Puranas which have been associated with several
mythological occurrences. 1. Brahma Puran 2. Padma Puran 3. Vishnu
Puran 4. Shiva Puran 5. Bhagwat Puran 6. Narad Puran 7. Markandeya
Puran 8. Agni Puran 9. Bhavishya Puran 10. Brahma Vaivarta Puran 11.
Linga Puran 12. Varah Puran 13. Skanda Puran 14. Wama Puran 15.
Koorma Puran 16. Matsya Puran 17. Garud Puran 18. Brahmand Puran.

Of them, Skanda Purana is the largest and important one. Skanda is

another name of Lord Kartikeya, son of Lord Shiva. In South India,
Skanda is worshipped and called by various names i.e. Kandan,
Murugan, Aaru Muga Bhagavan (six faced God) etc.

Skanda Purana comprises of seven Khands (Divisions), namely

Maheshwar Khand, Vaishnav Khand, Brahm Khand, KASHI KHAND,
Avanti Kshetra Khand, Naagar Khand and Prabhas Khand. Of all the
Khands, KASHI KHAND has been read and revered by various
ancient people, which gives a detailed study of Kashi and its
importance.

In Kashi Khand great importance is given to Lord Vishnu. The epic also
mentions several places in Kashi where Lord Vishnu is existent in
different forms. Many people undertake worship and pooja at these
places. In the forthcoming pages, the temple wise details of Vishnu
Temples are given. Many temples are stand alone temples. Some
Vishnu deities are located inside other temples. Many staunch devotees
undertake Maha Vishnu Yatra on important days like Vaishakh Shukla
Ekadasi, Kartik Shukla Ekadasi etc.
*******************************
KASHI YATRA PERFORMED BY SOUTH INDIANS

All Hindus consider it very auspicious to visit Kashi at least once in their
life time. South Indians undertake Kashi Yatra wherein rituals in three
places viz. Allahabad, Kashi and Gaya are involved. Given below, in brief
are the rituals generally performed in Kashi.

i) Maha Prayaschittam.
ii) Maha Sankalpam
iii) Manikarnika Snanam
iv) Panchagatta Pindam
v) Ganga Pooja/Dampati Pooja
vi) VishwanathaAbhishekham
vii) Annapoorna/Vishalakshi Archanai
viii) Kala BhairavaSamaradhanai
ix) Worship of PanchKowdi Mata temple which is located opposite
Durga Temple on the way to Kabir Nagar Colony. (This temple, however,
does not find any mention in Kashi Khand).

The above rituals may normally take 2-3 days. Three days would be ideal
and if only 2 days are allotted, some rites or rituals might have to be cut
short. Regarding importance of Manikarnika Snanam and Panchagatta
Pindam, readers may please refer to our write up of five important ghats
elsewhere. Regarding the temples mentioned above, devotees may
kindly go through the respective temples’ write up in our website
varanasitemples.in.

VISHNU BHAGWAN IN KASHI

According to Kashi Khand, Chapter 26, at the time of Maha Pralay

(deluge) there was absolute destruction every where and darkness
prevailed all over. Even during the worst time of deluge, Lord Shiva and
Goddess Parvaty did not leave this place (Pancha Krosha Kshetra),
therefore this place is known as Avi Mukta Kshetra. Lord Shiva desired
that every one in the Kshetra (region or area) should be happy and the
place was called as Ananda Kanan (Anandavan).

Lord Shiva cast a soft and affectionate glance to his left side wherefrom a
handsome man appeared. Since this person qualified as Uttama Purush,
he was known as Purushottam. Lord Shiva was glad and he proclaimed
that Purushottam was none other than Maha Vishnu. Lord Shiva and
Lord Vishnu entered Anand Van where Lord Vishnu immediately
engaged himself in intense prayers which lasted for 5000 years.

With his Sudarshan Chakra, Lord Vishnu dug a huge Pond and filled it
with his divine perspiration. This Kund came to be known as
Chakrapushkarini Teerth. Lord Vishnu was deeply engrossed in his
prayers and Lord Shiva was moved by the former’s sincerity. He
requested Lord Vishnu to get up and ask for divine boon. Lord Vishnu
desired that both Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvaty should always be
available to accept his (Lord Vishnu’s) prayers. Lord Shiva’s jewel from
the ear tops fell in the Chakrapushkarini Teerth and then onwards the
Pond came to be called Manikarnika (jewel is referred to as Mani and
Karnika means ear).

Lord Vishnu further stated that the entire area is shining with a bright
divine light with great radiance and, therefore, this Kshetra (region) will
be called as “Kashi”. (Even now Kashi is referred to as City of Light).

BINDU MADHAV

As per directions of Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu travelled from Mandarachal

to Kashi with a divine mission of making King Divodas leave Kashi (Kindly
read Divodaseshwar).

After having accomplished his mission, Lord Vishnu was enjoying the
serene beauty of Kashi, Pancha Nada Teerth, Padodak Teerth and other
places. At Pancha Nada Teerth, he came across one extremely lean
looking Sage who was undergoing Tapas.

Lord Vishnu in his divine form approached the Sage whose name was
Agni Bindu and stood in front of him. The Sage, on seeing the Lord in
person, was ecstatic and he prostrated before the Lord. The Sage then
started singing praises of the Lord.
The Sage addressed the Lord by various names like Mukunda,
Madusudan, Madhav, Narayan, Rama Bhadran, Chatur Bhuj, Janardhan
etc. The Sage also mentioned that those who worship Lord Vishnu with
Tulsi leaves or garland made of Tulsi Leaves will get lots of blessings.

After having sung all praises about Lord Vishnu, Agni Bindu Rishi stood
silently with folded hands. Lord Vishnu asked the Sage to seek any divine
boon. The Sage, in reply, sought only one thing: that Lord Vishnu should
always be available in the vicinity of Pancha Nada Teerth.

Lord Vishnu granted accordingly. He further stated that Kashi is a Punya

Kshetra and devotees can achieve several kinds of Siddhi by staying in
Kashi. Lord Vishnu further told that he would stay in Kashi as long as
Kashi is present and there will be no destruction of Kashi, as this holy city
is situated atop the Trishul (Trident) of Lord Shiva. Therefore, even Maha
Pralay (great deluge) cannot destroy the city.

Agni Bindu Rishi was extremely happy at this and sought one more
divine boon from Lord Vishnu. He desired that Lord Vishnu should
always be available in the vicinity of Pancha Nada Teerth in the name of
the Sage. Further, a devotee who takes bath in Pancha Nada Teerth and
even if he dies elsewhere, he should attain Moksha. The Sage also
sought that a devotee who bathes in Pacha Nada Teerth and worships
Lord Vishnu should be blessed with wealth and prosperity.

Lord Vishnu agreed to the request of the Sage. He stated that

henceforth he (Lord) will be known as Bindu Madhav in Pancha Nada
Teerth. By his presence, the Teerth will be extremely Sacred and
devotees who bathe in this Teerth and honour learned persons, will be
blessed with wealth and prosperity. The Teerth, which is capable of
cleansing all Sins, will be called as Bindu Teerth.
A person may have
committed various sins,
knowingly or unknowingly.
But if, during the Kartik
Month, he religiously bathes
in Pancha Nada Teerth
(Panch Ganga) and worships
Bindu Madhav, he will
attain Mukti.

Kashi Khand, Chapter 60 has given in detail the importance of Kartik

Month in respect to Pancha Nada Teerth. Lord Visweshwar himself
regularly takes bath in this Teerth during Kartik Month.

Lord Vishnu further stated that he (Lord) was called as Aadi Madhav in
Sat Yug, he should be worshipped as Ananda Madhav in Tretha Yug, he
would present himself in Dwapar Yug as Shree Madhav. In Kali Yug the
Lord should be known by the name of Bindu Madhav.

PRAYAG MADHAV

Kashi Khand mentions Prayag Teerth where devotees have been advised
to take bath and worship Prayag Madhav. Prayag Teerth has been
mentioned to the north of Dasaswamedh.
Devotees who worship
Prayag Madhav with all
divinity will be cleansed of
all their sins. They will find
all round happiness in their
lives.

Kashi Khand has attached a great importance to bathing in Prayag

Teerth. Prayag Teerth, as such, is not in existence but this falls within the
larger area of Dasaswamedh.

One point needs to be mentioned here to make things clear. At the time
when Skanda Puran was conceived by Bhagwan Ved Vyas and when the
Puran was actually written, there were only five bathing places in Ganga
at Varanasi, which had a great religious importance, namely Assi,
Dasaswamedh, Manikarnika, Panchganga and Varuna. Even today, South
Indian pilgrims who visit Varanasi, for their Kashi Yatra, perform
Shraaddha Karma at the above five Ghats. Over a period of several
centuries, many Ghats have come up in the name of many Kings or the
Royal families, etc. Religiously speaking, Dasaswamedh extends to a
very wide area in the river Ganga and may include several new Ghats in
its fold.

Therefore, Prayag Teerth as mentioned in Kashi Khand is a part of

Dasaswamedh. Devotees may consider both as synonymous. Great
importance has been attached to taking bath in the above Teerth in
Magh Month and worshipping Prayag Madhav. Persons doing so, will be
blessed with wealth, food grains, happy family and will attain Moksha.
LOCATION OF PRAYAG MADHAV

Prayag Madhav is located at D.17/111, in the premises of Ram Mandir at

Dasaswamedh Ghat. Some people also call it Dharani Varaha (Ref:
Varanasi Vaibhav by Pt. Kuber Nath Sukul). Devotees can travel
