FIX ME!

According to Devlin (2012), math is something you play with, something you do. Math
subject is not about computation or make your lives more complicated, but you can enjoy math
through games, that’s why as a future mathematics teacher we ensure that this game will make
you love mathematics.

Since most of the students having a hard time in solving determinants, especially in
applying the Law of Sign, this game is proposing to make them master how to get determinants
and recall their previous lessons about law of sign. Through this game, the students will catch
their attentions and enjoy the lesson. Therefore, they will learn a lot.

BENEFICIARY:

Bachelor of Secondary Education major in Mathematics

LOCATION:

Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology – San Isidro Campus

DEFINITION:

The determinant of a matrix is a scalar value that is a function of a square matrix. Its input
consists of a square matrix, while the output is a number. It can be denoted as det (A).
Determinant is useful in solving for linear equation, capturing how linear transformation change,
and changing variables into integrals. It can determine whether those matrices have an inverse
and if the system of equation has a unique solution. Moreover, determinants is useful particularly
to the field of science, engineering, big data, data analysis, business calculus, and so on.

OBJECTIVES:

* To identify the knowledge of the participants in finding the pieces of puzzles to put together in
order to get the correct image to solve the given equation

COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

* To measure students’ knowledge on how to get the determinants of the given matrix

* To improve students’ ability and mastery of solving the determinants

* To show students’ ability to connect as a team.

DESCRIPTION:

This game is called Fix Me. A game that involves a puzzle in which a group of students
will try to put the pieces together to arrive at the correct image. The puzzle contains a set of
questions about determinants of a matrix. A fun and interactive way to test students pattern
recognition and help them understand the process of solving to come up with the right answer.
This game will be played by a group of students, which purposely created to improve students’
ability and mastery of solving the determinants. To measure their knowledge on how to get the
determinants of a given matrix, their communication, cooperation, and unity as a team, to solve
the hidden message as fast as they can, and get the points to win the game.

PROCEDURE:

STEP 1: The students will be group into 6 consisting of 5 members per group.

STEP 2: Your teacher will give a puzzle and you will fix it; the cooperation of each member is
important to quickly build the puzzle

STEP 3: After completing the puzzle given by your teacher, you will proceed again with your
teacher to get the questions that is ready for you to answer. Each member must answer one by
one on a board. (Calculators and cellphone are not allow during the game)

*For questions 1 and 2, find the determinants.

[ ]
10 7 −3
[ ] 7 4
9 2
0 −1 5
3 5 9

*For questions 3 and 4, find the adjucate/inverse.

[ ]
9 2 1
[ 15 8
4 0 ] 7 5 −4
2 −8 10

*For question 5, apply the Cramer’s rule

2x + y + z = 3

x–y–z=0

x + 2y + z = 0

STEP 4: The first group who get the correct answer will be given 2 points. The group who will
gain the most points will be the winner.
