Homework Year 3-6 – Environmental Responsibility Debate

This week you are going to prepare for a big debate. All Year 3-6 children will debate about who is
responsible to take care of our environment. In class you will draw a paper and on that piece of
paper you will see what team you will be on during the debate. Even if it is not how you personally
feel, you will have to find arguments to defend the role on your piece of paper.

 The government is responsible for the environment. The government must come up with
laws, so we will take care of the environment. If there e.g. is no law that says we have to
recycle glass, we don’t have to… It’s a choice, not a responsibility.
 Everyone is responsible for the environment. Children may not be able to make big decisions
for their parents and individual adults may not be able to make decisions for the
government, but everyone must be responsible at their own level, including children.

Prepare statements that will help you to persuade the other team. Anticipate on what the other
team will bring in and prepare how you will respond to this. You can practise this debate at home.
Ask your mom and dad, or siblings, to pick up the other role and have a discussion after dinner.

During the debate you’ll have to bring in good argumens and you have to speak with confidence;
loud, clear, look at the people around you. Convince them!
