THE DIRECTOR, MSOMI TEACHERS COLLEGE

1
PROPOSAL FOR THE PROPOSED MSOMI DIPLOMA TEACHERS’ COLLEGE

1. Introduction

Msomi Teachers' College has trained students to be teachers from Migori, and the county
as large. The change of the curriculum to CBC is a necessary need for ALL teachers as it is not
only a requirement, but also a must for the already PTE and ECDE teachers trained on the
previous curriculum to upgrade their skills to match the pupil’s needs.

Justification

Migori County has about a minimum 15 schools in each Ward, of the 40 wards. Each school
has an average 6 teachers not trained nor upgraded to the CBC curriculum in primary and
pre-primary levels. This translates to a minimum 3,600 teachers who need the training.

Related Institutions

Migori County has by now Migori TTC, a Public Institution that remains largely inaccessible
by most potential teachers due to comparatively higher fees charged. The College cannot
also accommodate all the potential teachers in the county, not forgetting that it admits
students through the government KUCCPS. This gap makes revival of MSOMI TTC too easy
potential to meet its capacity.

With good financial, marketing and academic management, the college will be able to make
profits within its first term of operations.

2. Mission, Vision, Objectives, Philosophy

MISSION

The Mission of the institution is to train men and women who will:

• Be capable of motivating those they teach and have acquired a zest for knowledge so
that they will be motivated to continue life-long learning.
• Be highly competent in the application of pedagogical skills.
• Be committed to sound environmental practices in order to ensure and enhance
sustainable development.

2
• Have developed positive attitudes, values and morals so as to be effective leaders in
the communities they serve.

• Kindness, love and wisdom Environmental care.
• Collegiality, commitment and loyalty.
• Total reliance on God, our Maker.

PHILOSOPHY

The philosophy of the College is based on two tenets: accent on INDIVIDUAL WORTH and on
EXCELLENCE. In pursuing this philosophy, the institution is guided by the belief that in order
to achieve our full potential as human beings we need Divine Grace.

5. THE MARKETING PLAN
I. Situation Analysis

Msomi TEACHER’S College’s main goals are to continue to build and maintain a professional
image and reputation for the college. There will be emphasis on Msomi branding, which will
aid in increasing student enrolment and community awareness as well as give students the
option of training for a career faster without financial burden. Branding and community
awareness are key factors for increasing the number of students.

A. Msomi has somewhat made a name for itself in the community since inception. The
main focus for this reinventing will be branding; getting people to recognize the
name and the logo right away and associating it with a positive image.
B. Misinformed and uninformed citizens are an obstacle; accurate and positive
information will help keep the community informed about the benefits of enrolling
in a Teacher Education Training Programme at Msomi.
C. The “rethink EDUCATION” campaign will focus on the advantages and reasons for
career and teaching training to help people understand how their lives can benefit
from programs offered at Msomi.
D. Msomi will strengthen cooperative relationships with the Ministry of Education and
the County Government to capitalize on the strength of each institution to maximize
education and training opportunities for community members.

II. Target Audience

1. Adult students (P1 and ECDE Trained teachers and/or those wishing to UPGRADE
to DIPLOMA).
2. High School graduate students, especially those who did examinations(KCSE) in
2022 and earlier.

III. Goals
1. Increase knowledge and awareness about Msomi and the benefits of Training
programs. 2. Make meaningful cooperation with Government, organisations and
community.

5
3. Develop a marketing strategy for potential students consistent with the
College mission.

IV. Key Strategies

1. Keep engaging interactive website up-to-date. Use website as a key
component for changing the mind-set for Teaching colleges. Innovative look will
help build professional brand.
2. Use digital ad and retargeting to increase online exposure for targeted areas in
Migori County and the region(Fluid advertising).
3. Continue to build a reputation for the college as the provider for high wage
Teacher training.
4. Expand community outreach and marketing to build name and brand
recognition for MSOMI TTC (press releases, actively participate in education and
community events, etc.).
5. Focus on the “rethink EDUCATION” theme to show people how they can take
advantage of career and teacher training. Develop published materials to show
Msomi’s unique role in Teacher education.
6. Continue program videos—video series highlighting individual programs.
7. Maintain consistent, ongoing communication mechanisms for outreach to
Teachers in Schools within the borders of Msomi TTC.
8. Develop working relationship with high school counsellors to recommend
certificates to students interested in Teaching. Hold faculty and counselor
meetings for schools at our campus or ask to present at such meetings in order
to educate staff and faculty about what Msomi has to offer and how we benefit
their student body.
9. Increase exposure by promoting Facebook traffic and encouraging followers to
‘like’ page so that they receive information about what is going on Msomi.
Facebook contests and giveaways (give away prizes for ‘liking’ and sharing our
Facebook page; hold a contest for ‘face of Msomi’ among students to have them
featured in upcoming ads or videos, promotional giveaway, i.e. Photo contest).
10. Expand social media presence on Twitter, Instagram and incorporate Snap
Chat.

6
11. Promote articulation with KUCCPS.
12. Actively participate in Migori County Education activities and events.

BUILD COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS

• Continue to build partnerships with the local communities in our service area and region,
by participating in and/or sponsoring strategic local events, as well as branding outreach
opportunities;

• Increase alumni connections with students for strategic marketing opportunities,

mentoring and coaching opportunities, support of advancement, and fundraising
campaigns;

• Create awareness in the Education community about Msomi Teacher Education programs
and encourage local business to sponsor college scholarships, internships, and become
donating partner.

SUSTAINABILITY

It is important to note that the college did not previously do expectedly well due to total
reliance on income from student fees. Previous managements did not put in place measures
for sustainable development. Opportunities exist as the college is situated in a town
environment and market is available due to population. To survive, there need to be
conscious efforts by management for survival tactics. These include;

1. Coming up with cost cutting and cost reduction strategies

2. Employment of ways to produce own resources like renting a few acres of land to
produce maize, beans and other foods. These takes about 50% of costs.
3. Playing a consultant role in recruitment of human resources in education(Teachers)
for other basic education Institutions (Primary and secondary schools)
• Conducting aptitude tests and interviews to find students’ strengthsHelping
students develop key skills, like time management and study habits
• Outlining plans for academic and career goals
• Advising on educational materials and staffing

7
• Analyzing teacher performance, curricula, and other educational data to ensure
they meet the correct goals
• Collaborating with parents and teachers to aid in students’ success
• Coaching educators on ways to improve their teaching skills
