    Syntax: The Simple sentence

     What follows is a summary of a series of events that take place in Edith


    Warton’s short story Roman Fever.
    Analyse the syntactic structure of the following sentences by means of X-
    bar theory tree diagrams.

    a) The women had eaten lunch at that Roman restaurant on many occasions.
    b) They always drank some vermouth before the main dish. 
    c) Alida wanted to discuss a taboo topic with her friend to make her tell her the
    truth. 
    d) After lunch, they asked the waiter to allow them to stay there for some
    time. 
    e) Knitting uninterruptedly, Grace listened to Alida with perplexity. 
    f) The women had both been waiting for that moment for a long time.
    g)  Alida’s husband had betrayed his wife’s trust that night. 
    h) Would this bleeding wound ever heal? 
    i) What can they do to save their long-lasting friendship?
    j) How could they ever overcome the Roman Fever?
