CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

According to our research cyberbullying is defined as a form of bullying

or harassment using electronic means. Cyberbullying and cyberharassment are

also known as online bullying. Cyberbullying is an issue that happens all the

time especially among teenagers, as the digital sphere has expanded

technology has advance. Studies have indicated that cyberbullying is becoming

a major problem in schools and has a number of adverse effects. The objective

of this study is to investigate “The Effects of Cyberbullying on the Academic

Behaviour of SHS Students in SJaCS’’.

Cyberbullying takes on various forms, including using emails, instant

messaging, and text messages to send harassing and threatening messages or

posting such messages in chat rooms, on bash boards and on other social

networking websites Many of these actions involve primarily insults, threats,

spreading rumours, sharing someone else’s information and so on. It inflicts

emotional harm to the victim.

There are different types of cyberbullying, some of these includes

exclusions, harassment, cyber stalking, impersonation, trolling and fake

profiles. This may result in poor academic performance, low self-esteem, anger,

anxiety family problems, depression, school violence and worse, suicide.

It is even possible that the damage from cyberbullying would be greater

than bullying because there’s no scape for the victims, harmful material could

be easily preserved as well as quickly and widely spread. All of this creates a

mess and hurts as an individual emotionally that’s the reason why we chose

this kind of study to know on how to prevent the cyberbullying and give an

awareness to all students who have experiencing the cyberbullying.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Cyberbullying started from social networking and advancing new

technologies. Social networking and the development of new technology led to

the rise of cyberbullying. Cyberbullying as the name implies is the use of

cyberspace as a mechanism to bully others known or unknown to the bully.

This form of bullying is severely and affecting many adolescents involved. The

victims are experiencing low self-esteem, increased suicidal ideation and a

range emotional reactions including cyberbullying back, being terrified,

annoyed, furious and depressed. It is a serious problem, and many individuals

are unsure of how to deal with it in public. Overall, cyberbullying is on the rise,

and if we don’t do something about it, future generations may suffer.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

The study's intended course is discussed under the conceptual

framework. The major variables in the input are the Senior High School

students and a few items from the questionnaire. The second frame comprises

techniques and procedures for analyzing the variables by using the direct

method of gathering data through making a survey questionnaires, gathering

data and interpretation of data.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

These studies have significant to several areas. First, the result of this

study provides up to date information about the nature and extent of cyber

bullying among the student. Moreover, the finding of this study may assist the
authorities, lecturers and parents to take more effective steps to combat cyber

bullying. The outcomes of this study is to make students aware of

cyberbullying, the consequences and how to prevent cyberbullying.

Students: This study helps the students to overcome one of the most prevalent

forms of harassment and to become aware of cyberbullying.

Parents: This study will help all the parents that serve as a main influence in

their children mental and physical development. Parents only want happiness

to their child but know a day technology may useful or harmful to their

children. One of example of negative effect of technology is cyberbullying. This

study will help parents to take more effective steps to combat cyberbullying

and to become aware of it.

Prefect of Discipline: This study will help authorities to identify what are the

characteristic of cyber bullies. Some of cyber bullies may committed a suicide

due to prevalent form of harassment that they face in their daily life. This study

will help authorities to prevent that kind of accident.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

The study will highlight the implications and repercussions of

cyberbullying today in our society, especially to those teenagers who are most

affected because cyberbullying happens through social media. It will answer

the question about how we can prevent from being cyberbullied, show us how

are teenagers cyberbullied and the fact that being a victim of cyberbullying can

be a common and painful experience. This can also demonstrate how do

victims react to the specific topic because, we all know that cyberbullying can

happen in a number of ways and it can have a negative impact on a wide scope

of people in our society. It was expected that the researchers had the study

ethically. Additionally, literature reviewed would clearly identify the prevalence

and importance of the study.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF THE RELATED LITERATURE

The purpose of this literature review is to provide a comprehensive

analysis of the current research on cyberbullying and the issues that surround

it in order to develop future researchable hypotheses in the area of

cyberbullying as it relates to school policy and protocol.

Foreign Review

This chapter includes discussion about the effect of cyberbullying

between male and female and some recommended prevention for cyberbullying.

The use of information and communication technologies can cause harm

to others in cyberbullying Belsey (2004). Cyberbullying is simply depicted as a

type of bullying which uses different electronic elements such as internet and

mobile devices to constantly, antagonistically and purposely hurt or harm

someone. The intercommunication is transmitted through electronic devices

such as cellphone, websites, webcams, chat rooms and email Sharif (2005).

According to Salona (2011), the increasing presence of technology makes

it difficult for a victim to get away from cyberbullying. Cyberbullies do not have

to exert effort to harass and frighten the victim. In just one click and access to

cellphones and computers, they can do what they aim to do. All people can be
a cyberbully and such persons usually have few worries about having face-to-

face confrontation with their victims. In fact, many students who do not want

to bully in traditional sense take the advantage of anonymity of cyberbullying.

According to Hinduja and Patchin (2012), several high- profile suicides

have been blamed on cyberbullying. These events have led to increasing

attention on the issue and effort to prevent is becoming a top priority.

Local Review

According to Connolly (2014) stated in the “Facts About Cyberbullying’’

that only 1 in 10 victims will inform their parents or trusted adult about their

abuse. As a result, cyberbullying victims can easily get away with their act. In

relation to this, only one in every six parents to adolescents knows exactly

what is cyberbullying. With this being said, cyberbullying is a serious problem

and with the development of technology, the rates of its victimization continue

to grow rapidly.

According to Gordon (2016), found that teenage victims of cyberbullying

experience anxiety, fear, depression, low self-esteem, resulting in feeling

overwhelmed, vulnerable, powerless, revengeful, exposed, humiliated, isolated

and losing interest in schooling and life.

However, cyberbullying is not foreign in the Philippines. The Stairway

Foundation Inc. conducted a survey in the Philippines including 1,268 school

children aged 7 to 12 and 1,143 aged 13 to 16. It was conducted in the areas of

the National Capital Region; Silang, Cavite; Zamboanga Sibugay; Bayawan

City, and Bacolod City, Negros; Cebu City; and Tiu, Batangas. According to the

data gathered, 80% of the teenagers aged 13 to 16 are cyberbullied through

social media while 60% of the children counterparts aged 7 to 12 suffered the

same abuse (Takumi, 2016).

Following this, cyberbullying has similar effects with bullying. Recent

statistics show that bullying has a negative impact on the victims’ self-esteem

according to 83% young people, as a result, 30% have inflicted harm on

themselves.
CHAPTER 3

METHODOLOGY

This chapter is about the researchers’ applied methods and techniques in

gathering the data information to the respondents that will be used for

analyzing the data that the researchers used to gather the needed information

to the problem. In order to have a clear understanding about the process of

this study.

RESEARCH DESIGN

The researchers used questionnaires to gather information or data from

the respondents. The researchers used qualitative method to know the cause

and effects of cyberbullying in each level grade in the different strands in the

San Jacinto Catholic School Inc.

LOCALE OF THE STUDY

The study will be conducted in San Jacinto Catholic School Inc. They will

be survey inside their classroom or any comfortable place that the respondents

will choose to. The researcher chose the setting of implementation because it

will give researchers the needed information for people who experienced
cyberbullying. The study will be conducted in the first semester of the

academic year 2022-2023.

RESPONDENTS OF THE STUDY

The Senior High School Students in San Jacinto Catholic School Inc.

Academic Year 2022-2023 are the study’s respondents, which is essential to

the study’s success. These participants were all chosen by random sampling.

Every participant in this sampling process has the potential to be included in

the sample. Students from each section of Senior High School in San Jacinto

Catholic School Inc. were asked to answer and complete the surveys form.

There will be an student in each level grade in the different strands. All

participants were made aware that the study was anonymous and that they

were not asked to provide their full names or identification numbers, with the

exception of their gender and section or strand, which are necessary for other

statistical purposes.

DATA GATHERING INSTRUMENTS

The researcher will use one research instrument in the study.

Questionnaire was used in the study in order to obtain data. The questionnaire

consisted of 20 questions. In addition, the study conducted a surprise

visitation in each section to disseminate the surveys form. Making a request

letter is the initial stage in the data collection process before beginning the

actual testing. The researcher gets the request letter once it has been approved.

In order to avoid being distracted by class discussions, the researcher used the

time designated for free time to administer the questionnaire. The respondents

will be given enough time to answer the questions. After gathering the data, the

collected it in order to add up and to apply the statistical analysis to be used

with the study.
