In the summer, I have a job at a park in a nearby coastal town. The park is really big with many
enjoyable rides and modern restaurants. Actually, the best thing is its location by the sea. There is
a wide path along the beautiful beach with many shops that sell food and drink.

My work there is more interesting than my lessons at university. I welcome the visitors and inform
them about safety instructions before the ride begins. I work here for about two months every
summer and enjoy it very much. The park entry is free for all employees; therefore, I can have as
many rides as I want.

The main problem is that the weather can become too hot, but then, I can simply jump in the cool
waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

aaiSalman came to the Sheikh and said: “O, kind friend, a great misfortune has befallen me, and I
can’t tell anyone but you about it. You too will be disturbed when you hear of it.”
aaiThe Sheikh was silent as Salman began narrating his story. “After years and years of hard work
and poverty, I was finally able to save some gold. I feared losing it, so I buried it under a tree at a
far-off place, away from the town. One day, when I went to check it, it had vanished!” he cried
out.
aaiThe Sheikh felt very sorry for Salman and said: “Indeed, you have a reason to be sad, my friend.
Perhaps, someone noticed you burying your treasure. The thief will be punished for his crime in
the next world.”

A very rich merchant in the city had a very stupid and ignorant son. He engaged the
best teachers for him, yet the son learned nothing. He was too idle to profit by any
instruction. His father gradually lost hope and began to despise him, though his
mother was always making excuses for him.

When the son had reached a marriageable age, his mother asked the merchant to
seek out a suitable bride for him. The merchant, however, was too ashamed and
troubled to say or do anything about his stupid son, and had made up his mind
never to get him married.

“I practised yoga for ten years in the forest, standing on one leg, fasting six days of

Ali and Fatima followed the girl to the first floor, happy to have found a good hotel
which was not full at this season of the year. She opened a door to the left. The
bedroom was pretty and there was a kitchen. But the windows opened on to a street
and the traffic was noisy. Ali asked if she could show them a quieter room at the
back. In fact, there was one but without a toilet, so they decided to take the first one.
Ali was afraid of sleeping badly. He did not like noise at all, especially at night and
thought that if they closed the windows, it would be too hot. But he was so tired that
he fell asleep immediately. His wife remained awake because of the heavy lorries
which passed in the street.

It was two o’clock in the morning and Khalid had still not been able to sleep. He kept
on thinking about his examination that day.

Even if he had revised his lessons more than necessary, he was scared of the paper
he would have that day. Mathematics … He liked the subject. He found it interesting
but he was not very good at it.

Khalid knew his friends Ali and Nabeel would, no doubt, score better marks in
mathematics. As for him, he kept on trying but had always scored average marks.
But, this time, it would be different, said a small voice deep inside him. Determined
to better himself, he had been putting a lot into it for more than two weeks to prepare
himself for the examination.

One morning, Mary’s father decided to take the family to the seaside. Mary was very
happy. She ran to the car carrying her doll. When her elder sister, Catherine, noticed
that she was bringing the doll, she asked her to leave it at home. “If you take your
doll, it will get dirty. And you will not be able to move about freely, especially when
you go swimming. Leave it at home,” she advised. But Mary was stubborn. She felt
sad about leaving the poor doll at home while she would be enjoying herself at the
seaside. So, she insisted on bringing it until her sister gave in.

I hate town life. People here are selfish. Nobody cares for their neighbours. Everyone
is busy with their work. At night it is dangerous to walk around.

Recently I decided to spend a few days in a village. I went to stay with a friend in
the north of the island. One morning I went to the fields with his parents. On the
way I met many villagers. They greeted me even though they did not know me. After
spending a few days there, I returned home.

In my opinion, village life offers much joy that is not found in city life. Villagers, though
sometimes poor or illiterate, are always helpful and kind.

Last year, I travelled to Egypt with my wife and children. We visited a lot of historical
places in Cairo. When we came out of Cairo airport, there was a big red bus waiting
for us. It took us to our hotel. The hotel was situated near the River Nile, which is the
longest river in Africa.

The following day we visited the Egyptian Museum. Then I went to a well-known
bazaar where I bought gifts for my relatives and friends.

After spending one week in the city, we went to Alexandria by train and we stayed
there for four days. We visited the fort and the library of Alexandria. We thought it
was the most beautiful library in the world. It was such a lovely trip that at the end of
the holiday we were very happy.

Last December, during the holiday, my parents travelled to Saudi Arabia to perform
the pilgrimage. They stayed there for nearly a month.

However, I stayed at home with my elder sister who was very busy with her final
examinations. She was studying medicine at the University of Mauritius. My
grandmother came to our house early every morning to look after us.

One day, my grandmother became ill and had to stay at home to recover. As there
was nobody to take care of us, we had to eat fast food every day for dinner.

In the end, my uncle who lives in the south of the island invited us to stay at his
place. We gladly accepted his offer and we spent the remaining days of the holiday
there until our parents returned.

2 Translate into Arabic.

It was a Monday morning during the month of February. My friends and I were in the
classroom waiting for the Arabic teacher to arrive. After ten minutes, the teacher,
Mr Suleiman, came in. We stood up to greet him. Mr Suleiman said to the class that
he had something important to tell us. He informed us that he would be transferring
to teach at another secondary school soon.

We felt very sad and decided to buy him a beautiful gift. All the students contributed
some money. Then we asked the class captain to buy the present.

The next day, we gave the gift to Mr Suleiman. He thanked us warmly and advised
us to study hard. Moreover, he wished us plenty of success in our lives.

2 Translate into Arabic.

My mother accompanied me to school on the first day. We all waited in front of the school office.
After a few minutes, a teacher came and led us to our classroom. Since parents were not allowed
into the classrooms, the students started to cry. I did not cry because I had been to nursery before.
Our teacher was very busy writing our names on the whiteboard, so we had plenty of time to
ourselves.

Soon it was break time. We went to the canteen. I bought a drink with the money my mother
had given to me. After break, we returned to our classroom. With the help of my new friends, I
managed to persuade two boys to stop crying. Then we laughed and played together.

After completing his secondary education, Ali, my best friend, is going abroad for his higher
studies. His father told him to look for a job outside Mauritius. He said that there is no longer any
hope for young people to find a good job in their homeland.

This is something that I could never understand. How can there be no scope for a young man to
be employed when he has his family around him to support him, especially his mother? At home
he can obtain advice from his elders and get help from his elder brother.

Nowadays, people believe that success lies in working day and night to earn big sums of money in
a short period of time so that they can enjoy all the comforts in life.

It was a Sunday morning. The sun was shining brightly in the blue sky. The weather was perfect
for an excursion. In summer, children like to go to the seaside to swim and play in the water.

Hassan and his wife, Khadija, decided to go for a picnic in the company of their two children. They
thought it would be lovely to eat together on the beach and to admire the scenery.

Khadija prepared the meal while the children helped their father to put the small chairs and
umbrella in the car. “Don’t forget to bring your swimming suits!” said their parents.

Finally, they were ready and they all entered the car and they set off. Hardly had they travelled for
ten minutes, when it started raining.

One weekend, Hassan decided to go for a swim. He was having a great time when he
saw a little boy in difficulty in the pool. The boy was at the deep end. At first, Hassan
thought that the boy was playing but he started shouting for help. He was waving his
hands desperately.

Quickly, Hassan swam towards the boy. He reached him before he went under the water
again. The boy started crying and calling out for his mother. Hassan helped the little boy
to move to the other side of the pool. Then he lifted him to safety. The boy looked very
tired but was happy to see his parents coming towards him.

The boy’s parents were very grateful to Hassan for his help. Hassan advised the child
not to swim near the deep end of the pool again.

When school started in my town this term, students did not find some of their favourite food on the
menu. Fizzy drinks and sweets disappeared too. Chocolates and biscuits became smaller. As for
the most popular option, the French fry, it will be available only for one more year.

You could hear many angry voices everywhere, not just from students; our headteacher complained
about becoming the “health police”. Parents shared stories about chocolates being removed from
lunch boxes. Almost everyone relied on the machines in the cafeteria to get its treasures, leaving
little money for school activities like trips and sport.

Multiple e-mails reached the woman who made the new rules – the Minister of Health.

Permission to reproduce items where third-party owned material protected by copyright is included has been sought and cleared where possible. Every
reasonable effort has been made by the publisher (UCLES) to trace copyright holders, but if any items requiring clearance have unwittingly been included, the
publisher will be pleased to make amends at the earliest possible opportunity.

To avoid the issue of disclosure of answer-related information to candidates, all copyright acknowledgements are reproduced online in the Cambridge
Assessment International Education Copyright Acknowledgements Booklet. This is produced for each series of examinations and is freely available to download
at www.cambridgeinternational.org after the live examination series.

Cambridge Assessment International Education is part of the Cambridge Assessment Group. Cambridge Assessment is the brand name of the University of
Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES), which itself is a department of the University of Cambridge.
