Performance Task
Balloons for the School Carnival

You will sell helium-filled balloons at the school carnival for $2.50 each. Before you can
sell the helium-filled balloons, you need to purchase empty balloons and a helium tank.
One empty balloon costs $0.50. A tank of helium costs $50 and holds 250,000 cubic
centimeters of helium.

Part A
The amount of money you bring in from selling balloons is called revenue. Construct and
solve a model to determine the number of balloons you will need to sell to have revenue
of $40. Be sure to define your variables.

Part B
The profit from selling the balloons is equal to the difference between the revenue and
the cost. Construct and solve a model to determine the number of balloons you need to
sell to earn a profit of $100. Be sure to define your variables.

Part C
Construct a model that can be used to determine the number of balloons for which the
revenue equals the cost. Be sure to define your variables.

You will need to sell more than this number of balloons to earn a profit. How many
balloons will you need to sell for the revenue to equal the cost?

Part D
The balloons can be inflated to have a radius of 12 centimeters, plus or minus 2 centimeters.
Write an equation using absolute value to find the maximum radius and the minimum radius
of the balloons, and then find the maximum radius and the minimum radius. Solve the
equation, and justify each step.

Part E
4
The volume V of helium in a balloon can be found by using the formula V = r3,
3
where r is the radius of the balloon. Using the radii that you found in Part E, find the
maximum and minimum volume of helium in each balloon. Round your answers to the
nearest cubic centimeter.

Part F
If you fill each balloon with the minimum volume of helium, how many balloons can
you fill with the tank? Will you be able to make a profit of $100?
