I. Concepts:
Content Standard: The learner demonstrates understanding of whole
numbers up to 10 000, ordinal numbers up to 100th, and money up to
PhP1000.
Performance Standard: The learner is able to recognize, represent,
compare, and order whole numbers up to 10 000, and money up to
PhP1000 in various forms and contexts.

II. Objectives
The learner should be able to:
 visualize numbers up to 10 000 with emphasis on numbers 1001
- 10000.
 give the place value and value of a digit in 4- to 5-digit numbers.
 read and write numbers up to 10 000 in symbols and in words.

III. Key Points to Master


Study, understand and memorize the following:

Understand Digits, Place Value and Value

Digits are mathematical symbols that are arranged in a specific order to


represent numeric values. There are ten different digits in our number system.
They are listed below:

We use these ten digits to create numbers by placing them in a specific


order. It is the position of each digit within a number that determines its place
value.

In Math, every digit has a place value. PLACE VALUE can be defined as the
value represented by a digit in a number on the basis of its position in the number.
One digit alone can represent a number. A single digit that represents a number is
said to be in the ones place value position.

To assist in determining place value, we use commas to separate periods


of a number. The VALUE of a digit depends on its place value.

Here is an example showing the relationship between the place or position


and the place value of the digits in a number.

In 23, 714, 2 is in ten thousands place and its value is 20, 000, 3 in in
thousands place and its value is 3, 000, 7 is in hundreds place and its value is 700,
1 is in tens place and its value is 10 and 4 is in ones place and its value is 4.

Understand How to Read and Write Whole Numbers

Knowing the place value as well as knowing the periods of a number are
ordered, enables us to read and write whole numbers correctly.

When writing whole numbers using words, we always include the period(s)
in our word statement with exception of the ones period. The diagram below will
help us write the number 23, 714 using words. Pay attention to the numbers within
each period and how the commas are used in the word statement below.

In the sentence above, notice how the commas break up the sentence to
define the periods. Note that the ones period is excluded.

Understanding the place value of digits in numbers helps in writing


numbers in their expanded form. For instance, the expanded form of the number
above, 23, 714 is 20, 000 + 3, 000 + 700 + 10 + 4.

IV. Strategies and Assessments


Activity 1: Study, understand and memorize the key points to master.

Activity 2: Watch the video clip about understanding place value and value of
digits up to 10, 000 and reading and writing numbers up to 10, 000. Note that the
video clip will be sent through messenger. Using a sheet of yellow paper, write
what you have learned from the video clip.

Activity 3: Answer the activities on pages 9-10 and 13-15 in your Mathematics
book.
