Quarter: 1st

I. MELC/COMPETENCY: Rounding off numbers to the nearest hundred thousands and millions
II. OBJECTIVES: a. Identify the place value and the value of each digit in a given number
b. Round off whole numbers through hundred thousands and millions
III. SUBJECT MATTER
Topic: Rounding off numbers to nearest hundred thousands; millions
Reference: Phoenix Math for the 21st Century Learners 5 (pages 11-15)
IV. PROCEDURE:

A. Readings

Rounding off simply means renaming a quantity to the nearest given place value for
convenience. But before we proceed in rounding numbers, let us recall first the place
value of a digit in this number:

27, 782, 987

7- Ones 2- thousands 7- millions

8- tens 8- ten thousands 2-ten millions
9- hundreds 7- hundred thousands

*We name the place value of a digit of a given number starting from the right.

Example 1: Round off this number 25,278,963 to nearest million’s place.

25,278,963 25,000,000
Million’s place/ digit to be rounded off Digits 2,7,8,9,6,3 are
Replaced with zeros
Less than 5 so round down
Note:
(1) When rounding off a number, look at the digit to the right of the number to be rounded
off. If the digit is 4 or less, we drop it off and replace with zeros with all the digits that
follow. Round down means retain the digit being rounded off.

Example 2: Round off 687,952 to the nearest hundred thousand’s place.

687,952 700,000
More than 5/round up digits 8,7,9,5 and
Hundred thousand’s place/ digit to be rounded off 2 are replaced
Add 1( 6 becomes 7) with zeros

Note:
(2) If the digit to the right of the digit to be rounded off is 5 or greater, then the digit to be
rounded off is added with 1 and the rest of the digits at the right of the digit rounded
off shall be replaced with zeros. Round Up means add 1 to the digit being
rounded off

B. Exercises:

I. Underline the digit in the hundred thousand’s place, then round off each number to the
nearest hundred thousand’s place.

A. Readings
Divisibility rules- easily test if one number can be exactly divided by another number
without having to much calculation.
‘’Divisible By’’ means when you divide one number by another number the result is a
whole number.
To see if a number is divisible by 2, 5 and 10, look and understand the rules below:

Divisible
by: Condition Examples Rule

If the last digit is 84, 76, 178 All numbers ends in 0,2,4,6,8
2 an even number 0,2,4,6,8 are divisible by or even numbers are divisible
2 by 2
If the number 650/5= 130 All numbers ending in 0 and 5
5 ends in 0 or 5 355/5= 71 are divisible by 5
35/7= 5
If the number 20/10=2 All numbers ending in 0 is
10 ends with 0 670/10=67 divisible by 10
60/10=6

IV. PROCEDURE
A. Reading
We already learned from our previous lesson about Divisibility Rules for 2,5 and 10.
Now let’s study about Divisibility Rules for 3,6 and 9.

Condition
Divisible by: Examples/ Rules
The sum of the digits The sum of the digits in 825 (8+2+5=15).
3 of the given number is 15 is divisible by 3 therefore 825 is divisible
divisible by 3. by 3.
If the number is both 72- The last digit is even so it is divisible by 2.
6 divisible by 2 and 3 The sum of 7+2=9, therefore72 is divisible by
3.Hence,72 is divisible by 6.
If the sum of the digits 1,755—1+7+5+5= 18. The sum of the digits is
9 of the given number is 18. Since 18 is divisible by 9, therefore 1755 is
divisible by 9. divisible by 9.

IV. PROCEDURE
A. Reading
(Recall of the previous lesson about divisibility rules for numbers 2,510,3,6,and 9)
We’re done about divisibility rules for 2,5,10, 3, 6 and 9. This time , we will study about the
Divisibility Rules for 4,8,11 and 12. Can you tell me when a number is divisible by 4,8,11 and
12?
To know the answer, let us study the divisibility rules for 4,8,11 and 12.

Divisible Condition Examples/ Rules

By:
The last 2 digits must be Is 5,824 divisible by 4?
4 divisible by 4. Answer:
A number ending in 2 zeros (1) The last 2 digits is 24, and it is divisible
by 4. Therefore 5,824 is divisible by 4.
Is 400 divisible by 4?
(2) The last 2 digits is zeros, and it is
divisible by 4. Therefore 400 is divisible by
4.

The last 3 digits must be (1) 457 144 144÷8=18

divisible by 8 Therefore 457 144 is divisible by 8.
8 A number ending in 3 zeros (2) 3000÷8= 375
Since it ends with 3 zeros, therefore 3000
is divisible by 8.

If the difference of the sums of (1) 2,486

11 the alternate digits is 0 or 2
multiple 11. 4
8
6
2+8= 10
4 + 6= 10
10-10=0
Therefore 2486 is divisible by 11
A number is divisible by 12 if a Divisible by 3 (sum of it’s digits is divisible
12 number is divisible by both 3 by 3
and 4 264----- 2+6+4= 12
12 is divisible by 3 therefore 264 is divisible
by 3.
Divisible by 4 ( the last 2 digits is divisible
by 4)
264------ 64 ÷4= 16
The last 2 digits is 64 which is divisible by 4.
Therefore, 264 is divisible by 4.
Since 264 is both divisible by 3 and 4.
Therefore it is divisible by 12.
