WEEK # 1: NUMERATION SYSTEM
YOUR GOAL
At the end of this lesson the learners should be able to;

a. identify numbers through ten thousands;

b. give the place value and value of each number; and
c. read and write numbers through ten thousands in symbols and in words

LESSON 1
Numbers through Ten Thousands
Discussion
Some volunteers of a certain locality
helped in the barangay newspaper drive.
They were able to collect newspapers and
bundled them properly by kilograms. Let
us find out how many kilograms of
newspapers they were able to collect in all.

How many 1 000-kg bundles, 100-kg bundles, 10-kg bundles, and 1-kg
bundles of newspapers are there?
By counting,
The 6 bundles of 1 000-kg is 6 000 kg.

2|Page
The 5 bundles of 100-kg is 500 kg.
The 8 bundles of 10-kg is 80 kg.
The 7 bundles of 1-kg is 7 kg.

Let us use the place value chart to get the number.

THOUSANDS UNITS
Hundred Ten Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones
Thousands Thousands
6 5 8 7
The number is 6 587. It is read as “six thousand, five hundred eighty-seven.”
We use space to separate the periods when we write the number. Note the
space between 6 and 5 in 6 587.
Let us now find the place value of each digit. What is place value of the
following:
Digit 6? Thousands
Digit 5? __________
Digit 8? __________
Digit 7? __________
In the chart, the digits are grounded into periods of at most three digits per
period. The units period contains 587, while the thousands period contains 6.
The position of a digit of a number in a place value chart is used to determine
the value of the digit.
The digit 6 has a value of 6 000.
The digit 5 has a value of 500.
What is the value of the digit 8? _________
What is the value of the digit 7? _________

The owner of the junkshop issued a check to pay for the newspapers brought
by the barangay volunteers. On the check, he wrote the words “sixty-five thousand,
eight hundred seventy.” What is the corresponding amount in symbols?

In Words In Symbols

Sixty-five thousand, eight

₱65,870.00
hundred seventy pesos

For money, we use comma to separate the thousands and units. Hence,
₱65,870.00 is correct, not ₱65, 870.00 nor ₱65 870.00.

How do we write numbers in symbols and in words? Here are some examples.
a. Ninety-five thousand, eight hundred sixty-one 95 861
b. Fifty-six thousand, twenty-three 56 023
c. Ten thousand, two hundred 10 200
d. Four thousand, seven hundred fifty-nine 4 759
e. Thirty-one thousand, one hundred eleven 31 111

LET’S REMEMBER!
 The digits of the number are grouped into periods. The leftmost
period has one to three digits; all periods to the right have three digits
each.
 Use space to separate the periods in writing the number in symbols;
use comma (,) to separate the periods in writing it in words.
 Read the digits of the number by period from left to right.
 The value of a digit of a number depends on its position.

WEEK # 2: NUMERATION SYSTEM
YOUR GOAL
At the end of this lesson the learners should be able to;

a. identify numbers through hundred thousands;

b. give the place value and value of each number; and
c. read and write numbers through ten thousands in symbols and in words

LESSON 2
Numbers through Hundred Thousands
Vocabulary
o There are Three Different Forms in Math
1. Standard Form – the actual number
Example: 146,692
2. Word Form – the number written as words
Example: one hundred forty-six thousand, six hundred ninety-two
3. Expanded Form – the number written showing the value of each digit
Example: 100 000 + 40 000 + 6 000 + 600 + 90 + 2
 Period – is a group of three digits separated by commas in a large number

Discussion
In 2004, the number of Labrador retrievers registered with the American
Kennel Club was 146,692.
Question:
What is the value of the 1 in 146,692?
Let’s look at a place value chart to help
Us understand the value of each digit in a number

The digit 9 falls under the tens place
The digit 6 falls under the hundreds place
The digit 6 falls under the thousands place
The digit 4 falls under the ten thousands place
The digit 1 falls under the hundred thousands place

We can place 0 as a place holder. The value of the digit depends on its
position in the place value chart
Let’s Summarize it!

LET’S REMEMBER!
 The digits are grouped into periods and each period is separated by comma
(,) or space ( ).
 The place value of a digit tells the location of the digit in the numeral
 The value of each digit is equal to the digit times the place value.
