LESSON 1
Numbers through Ten Thousands
Discussion
Some volunteers of a certain locality
helped in the barangay newspaper drive.
They were able to collect newspapers and
bundled them properly by kilograms. Let
us find out how many kilograms of
newspapers they were able to collect in all.
How many 1 000-kg bundles, 100-kg bundles, 10-kg bundles, and 1-kg
bundles of newspapers are there?
By counting,
The 6 bundles of 1 000-kg is 6 000 kg.
2|Page
The 5 bundles of 100-kg is 500 kg.
The 8 bundles of 10-kg is 80 kg.
The 7 bundles of 1-kg is 7 kg.
3|Page
The owner of the junkshop issued a check to pay for the newspapers brought
by the barangay volunteers. On the check, he wrote the words “sixty-five thousand,
eight hundred seventy.” What is the corresponding amount in symbols?
In Words In Symbols
For money, we use comma to separate the thousands and units. Hence,
₱65,870.00 is correct, not ₱65, 870.00 nor ₱65 870.00.
How do we write numbers in symbols and in words? Here are some examples.
a. Ninety-five thousand, eight hundred sixty-one 95 861
b. Fifty-six thousand, twenty-three 56 023
c. Ten thousand, two hundred 10 200
d. Four thousand, seven hundred fifty-nine 4 759
e. Thirty-one thousand, one hundred eleven 31 111
LET’S REMEMBER!
The digits of the number are grouped into periods. The leftmost
period has one to three digits; all periods to the right have three digits
each.
Use space to separate the periods in writing the number in symbols;
use comma (,) to separate the periods in writing it in words.
Read the digits of the number by period from left to right.
The value of a digit of a number depends on its position.

Numbers through Hundred Thousands
Vocabulary
o There are Three Different Forms in Math
1. Standard Form – the actual number
Example: 146,692
2. Word Form – the number written as words
Example: one hundred forty-six thousand, six hundred ninety-two
3. Expanded Form – the number written showing the value of each digit
Example: 100 000 + 40 000 + 6 000 + 600 + 90 + 2
Period – is a group of three digits separated by commas in a large number
Discussion
