Performance Task
Fly the Skies!

Avia is a commercial pilot. From takeoff to landing, her flights last 2 hours. She is limited to
flying 30 hours every 7 days, and she must take one day off each week.

The first graph below shows the number of hours of flying Avia logged each day for the first 8
days in December. The second graph shows the velocity of her plane from takeoff to landing.
The third graph shows the path of a smaller plane that was spotted near Avia’s plane on a
recent flight.

Part A
Express the relation shown in the first graph as a set of ordered pairs and as a mapping. Is the
number of hours in the first graph the independent or dependent variable? Justify your answer.

Part B
In the first graph, what do the x-axis, y-axis, the scale of each of the axes, and the origin (0, 0)
represent?

Part C
Does the first graph represent a discrete function, continuous function, or not a function at all?

Part D
The table shows the flight delays for five other pilots. Pilot Delay
McGuire 30 minutes
List the domain and range of the relation. Is the relation a DiLauro 45 minutes
function? Explain your reasoning. Jackson 30 minutes
Zaleski 60 minutes
Rosenberg 120 minutes

Part E
The plane that Avia flies holds 2900 gallons of fuel. She landed the plane this morning with a
reserve of 900 gallons. The plane is refueled at a rate of 300 gallons of fuel per minute. The
function h(x) = 900 + 300x represents the amount of fuel in her plane after x minutes of
refueling. What is the meaning of h(5.5) in the context of this situation?

Part F
Name the values of A, B, and C when y = 900 + 300x is written in standard form.

Part G
Name and describe the meaning of the x- and y-intercepts in the context of the situation of the
second graph. Justify your answer.

Part H
The path of the smaller plane in the third graph is modeled by the function f(x) = –0.2x2 + 5.
Examine the key features of the graph. Estimate the x- and y-intercepts and describe where the
graph is positive, negative, increasing, decreasing. Determine the end behavior, any relative
maximum or minimum points, and the zeros of this function. Justify the zeros using algebra.

Part I
Describe the line symmetry, if any, of the path of the plane. Is the function linear or nonlinear?
