English as a subject. It is full of life lessons anyone can emulate. It has full of wide-range
characters one can relate. Readers may find themselves similar with the characters in the story.
But why are teachers struggling to teach literature? From my personal experience, despite
being a neophyte in the field, I saw two reasons, students’ low level of English proficiency and
low motivation.
Philippines is in the bottom rank in terms reading placing 340th. Poor reading skills and
comprehension means poor literary appreciation. How can learners see the essence of what they
are reading if, in the first place, they do not understand it? That is the first challenge of every
Assuming that learners can read and are able to comprehend what they are reading, there
is another mountain a literature teacher has yet to conquer. How can he/she motivate the students
to read? How can the teacher engage the students to interact with they are reading? It is very
important for teachers to let the learners see the significance of what they are reading. To arouse
the students’ interest, it should be clear to them why they are reading a certain piece, what they
can gain from it and the relevance of what they are reading.
