The Formance Design Guide V1.1 sets a

Scope minimum standard for the design and
construction of Structural Insulated Panel
(SIP) buildings within the scope of NZS
3604:2011 Timber Framed Buildings using the
Formance Structural Insulated Panels system.
When applied by architects, designers,
builders, engineers, apprentices, building
consent authorities and building industry
regulators, the Formance Design Guide V1.1
provides these users with a cost effective
means of compliance and practical guidance
for designing and building to meet New
Zealand Building Code requirements, without
the need for specific engineering design.
The Formance Design Guide V1.1 provides
prescribed methods for the design and
construction for Formance panel domestic
dwellings, most other residential buildings,
and some commercial buildings up to three
storeys in height.
The use of Formance Design Guide V1.1
during design and building provides
consumers with assurance that their home

#Electrical services in Formance Wire Chases

Formance panels are constructed of non-
hazardous building materials.

G services and facilities

G clauses of NZBC, that are relevant to
Formance Wall Panel standard use of Formance panels, relate to
Wire Chase installation of services.

Electrical Cable Electricity

Predrilled hole Typically, electrical wires are run through
in timber stud pre-cut channels inside the core of the panels
called "chases". Formance panels have
chases cut both horizontally and vertically
during the fabrication process according to
the requirements of the design.
Chases allow wires to be run inside Formance
wall panels. Electricians can access chases
by drilling a small access holes in the interior
skin of the panel. Location of chases are
clearly marked on Panel Layout Drawings,
provided together with the panels. Typically
the wall panels have one vertical chase in the
middle of the panels, and two horizontal
(250mm and 1050mm from ground up) chase.

Building contractors installing the Formance

System must ensure these chases are
continuous in panels by drilling holes in
splines to allow wires to be pulled through.

In this section the design process flow is

8 Step Formance Design Process explained. Following these steps in correct
order, will ensure a smooth design process
for each project.
1. Firstly determine the demand (loads
on actual project).
2. Using the project demands, choose
correct roof panel, based on the roof
panel span.
3. Knowing the roof framing plan project
and loads, select the wall panel.
4. Select the cap plate type for each
wall.
5. Bracing design can be done next,
following wall type selection. This is
done in accordance with the
determined loads and as per
NZS3604:2011.
6. Specify min. fixing for cladding and
roofing.

7. Specify lintel type and span.

8. Overall design process, may take
some time. It is recommended the
Design Checklist is referred to as a
final review, to ensure all steps have
been completed.

1. Demand
Determine demand for your final design, by
using NZS3604:2011. All these parameters
will be used in next steps selecting correct
panel thickness, connection details and fixing.
Project demand is driven by location of the
build, exposure and includes determining
wind zone, earthquake zone and snow zone.
Cladding and roofing loading depends on
selection of actual product.

2. Roof Panel span

Selecting correct panel thickness for the roof
is governed by the load on this area of roof
and span of the panel.

Define Roof Areas

We start by identifying orientation of the
span. Which load bearing walls (LBW) will
support the roof panels, or if there is no wall
available, there might be a roof beam needed
instead.

It is best to try selecting shorter spans

whenever possible. When completed, outline
selected roof areas and span orientation, by
creating “roof framing plan” similar to the
example below.

Loaded dimension
Determine Loaded dimension of defined Roof
areas, following NZS3604:2011.

Loading
Formance roof panels are taking the load of
the external environment (wind and snow)
and also the live load of selected roofing
(light or heavy roofing). There needs to be
min. 37mm bearing of panels on load bearing
elements (walls or beams).

Selecting type of Formance Roof

Panel and Thickness
There are two ways of using Formance
Panels on the roof.

Thermal Roof (SIP splines)

Thermal Formance Roof is using SIP splines
at every joint between the panels.

Reinforced Roof (Timber splines)

Reinforced Formance Roof is using timber
splines at every joint and a grade of timber
#Thermal Roof

#Reinforced Roof
varies depending on the span requirement.

Example of using Reinforced Roof Tables,

taking into consideration different grade of
timber or thickness of the panel and same
time achieving different R-value.

3. Wall Panel span

Loaded dimension
For Loaded dimension (as defined by
NZS3604:2011) refer to previously designed
“Roof Framing Plan”.

Height of the wall

Review all heights of the walls; distance from
bottom plate to top plate. You can list various
heights of walls as different types, or select
the “worst-case”, which will work for all wall
panels in this project.

Demand
In first section of Formance Design Process,
there were all project demands were
defined. Use proposed wall cladding load
and wind load to determine max height (span)
of wall panels. Review also the allowances
listed in the notes below the tables.

Panel Thickness
Reflect the selected thickness of wall panels
in your Floor Framing Plan (fully
dimensioned).

Another valuable function of the Cap plate
lies in building sequence. By overlapping the

FORMANCE Lintels
Formance lintels are formed using standard
Formance Wall Panel, reinforced with LVL
timber on all edges and min. height of the
panel, in order to achieve desired span.

Lintels to NZS3604:2011 / SED

Alternatively, lintels can be designed using
NZS3604:2011 or SED. Timber or Steel lintels
can be designed to fit within the core of the
Formance panels. Formance panels can be
cut exactly as advised in designer’s detail, in
order to slot the panel, over the pre-framed
lintel and create an airtight and insulated
lintel.

8. Design Checklist
When all the steps are completed, last thing
to do is to review all considerations, using a
Formance Design Checklist. By answering the
questions in the Checklist, the designer can
confirm all decisions are within the scope of
this Design Guide, or clearly list items that are
outside the scope. The list of these items can
then be used to engage a Structural Engineer
and to scope requirements of Engineering
Producer Statement (PS1).
We ask that a completed Checklist is

Example of building Building inspection Schedule will vary

Building Inspection Schedule between councils. This guide outlines the
inspection schedule standard inspections and which elements of
1. Pre-pour Foundation Formance panels are to be inspected at each
stage.
2. Pre-pour Floor
Example on the left is showing approximate
3. Bottom Plate Fixing Inspection
building inspection schedule, assuming
4. Pre-Roof / Panel Inspection timber framed building.

a. Timber lintel sizes and fixing Because Formance Panels are a solid
element, that fully encapsulates the bottom
b. Wall Panel fixing plate when slotted over, the inspection of
bottom plates has to occur prior to erection of
c. Roof Panel fixing
Formance wall panels.
5. Building and Sill Wrap or Cavity
Bottom plates are fixed to foundation
Batten
following NZS3604:2011 requirements or to
6. Flashings Specific Engineering Design (SED).

7. Cladding A similar approach needs to be considered

with other enclosed elements, such as timber
8. Pre-Line including Plumbing lintels and special beams. Wall panels can be
erected and timber framed lintels can be left
9. Pre-Stopping exposed before inspection. After these have
10. Final Inspection been inspected, the panel enclosing timber
lintel can be installed.
If there are other SED structures in the build,
these will need to be reviewed and the
correct schedule of inspection will need to be
prepared.

Bottom Plate Inspection

#Bottom Plate Fixing

Bottom plate must be installed and fixed in
accordance to NZS3604:2011.
The location of bracing elements and studs
for lintels and beams needs to be clearly
marked on the bottom plate, prior to panel
installation.
If there are Steel Straps designed for hold-
down of bracing elements, these should now
be correctly placed, before erecting
Formance panels.
