Indian Penal Code – II (LL212)

Course Objectives: This course aims at acquainting students with substantive criminal law
of the land. The Indian Penal Code, 1860 has stood the test of time and along with its
numerous amendments encapsulates a multitude of offences, their constituent elements and
well-defined penalties. The students will be made familiar with the different type’s offences,
their aggravated forms and their punishments with the help of significant case laws and other
ancillary resources.
Course Outcome: After completing the course, the student shall have the clear picture of
essential elements of various crimes and punishments recognized under the law. He will
analyze whether the accused has committed any crime as defined under the law and assess
the punishment required to be awarded. He will be having the enough knowledge of
substantive criminal law and guide the clients.
Unit I: Offences affecting Public Health, Safety, Convenience, Decency and Morals:
Definitions, Nature and Concepts of : Public Nuisance, Adulteration of Food, Adulteration of
Drugs -Offences against Public Safety and Convenience - Offences affecting Public Morals
and Decency
Unit II: Offences Relating to Elections, Religions and Counterfeiting: Offences Relating
to Elections: Electoral Rights, Bribery, Undue Influence, Personation, False Statements,
Illegal Payments and Related Punishments – Offences Relating Religion : Inuring or Defiling
place of Worship, Deliberate and Malicious Acts and Uttering Words to Hurt the Feelings,
Disturbing Religious Assembly, Trespassing the Burial Places – Counterfeiting: Meaning and
Nature of Counterfeiting Coin -Making, Selling, Exporting, Importing Possessing, Delivering
of Counterfeiting Coins, Government Stamps.
Unit III: Offences Affecting Human Life and Body: Offences Affecting Life : Culpable
Homicide and Murder – Offences Affecting the Body: Hurt and Grievous Hurt – Wrongful
Restraint and Wrongful Confinement – Criminal Force – Assault - Kidnapping and
Abduction – Slavery and Forced Labour –Unnatural offences – Suicide and Abatement to
Suicide.
Unit IV: Offences Against Women: Outraging the Modesty of Women - Kidnapping or
Abducting Women to Compel Her to Marry or Force Her to Illicit Intercourse -
Buying/Selling a Minor for Purpose of Prostitution - Sexual Offences – Rape and Custodial
Rape - Causing Miscarriage Without the Consent of Women - Acid Attacks - Sexual
Harassment - Assault or Use of Criminal Force to Woman with Intent to Disrobe –
Voyeurism – Staking - Cruelty by Husband or His relatives - Dowry death.
Unit V: Offences Relating to Property: Theft – Extortion – Robbery – Dacoity – Criminal
Misappropriation – Criminal Breach of Trust – Stolen Property – Fraudulent Dispositions of
Property –Cheating – Mischief – Criminal Trespass
Unit VI: Offences Relating to Documents and Property Marks: Forgery – Forged
Document – Forgery for the Purpose of Cheating – Property Mark – Using a False Property
Mark – Counterfeiting Property Mark – Counterfeiting of Bank Notes and Currency Notice –
Criminal Breach of Contracts
Unit VII: Offences Against Marriage: Inducing Cohabitation by Deceit – Bigamy –
Adultery – Fraudulent Ceremony without Lawful Marriage – Enticing Married Woman

Unit VIII: Offences Affecting Reputation: Concept of Defamation – Libel and Slander –
Exceptions to Defamation - Punishments for Defamation – Criminal Intimidation –
