CONTRAST

Indian- Origin English Authors have a different writing style than British English Authors.
Here, we need to understand each author's writing style before comparing them to identify some
points of distinction and convergence. Anyone who has to produce a book, magazine,
biography, or even just read an Indian/British book needs to be aware of the writing style in
order to make their work more successful, clear, and fascinating to readers. Any language‘s
main purpose is communication.

For my research, I've chosen RK Narayan, a well-known Indian-English author who was born
on October 10, 1906, in a Tamil Brahmin family in Madras (now Chennai, Tamil Nadu), British
India. Through his writing, Narayan was most successful in opening up India to the outside
world. He gave his readers something to look forward to with Malgudi and its residents and is
considered to be one of the best novelists India has ever produced. He gave his audience a
believable and first-hand experience of small-town India. Throughout his literary career,
Narayan received a great deal of recognition. He won the Film fare Award for best story when
the book was adapted into a movie. He received the AC Benson Medal prize in 1980.

Another well-known British-English writer, Charles Dickens, was born on Portsea Island on
February 7, 1812, at 1 Mile End Terrace (now 393 Commercial Road). In 1824, the family
struck rock bottom. Charles, the oldest son, had been dismissed from school and was now
working as a manual labourer in a factory, while his father had been put to prison for debt.
Creating an aesthetic coherence from the enormous range of moods and materials featured in
each novel, with frequently numerous convoluted plots involving hundreds of people, was made
much more difficult by Dickens' writing and serializing them.

So I have chosen one of their childhood books and compared their writing Style.

RK Narayan (Swami and friends) - The book's specifics are as follows:

Title: Swami and Friends

Author: RK Narayan

Language: English

Through this book the author put his efforts in order to create an uniquely personal
representation of his recalled childhood. The pressures and difficulties of British colonial power
over India determine Swami and Friends. While the events of the novel concentrate around
common childhood struggles and tribulations, the protagonist's and his friends' personal
experiences are darkened by their political background, even if the protagonists the mselves
have little understanding of it.
Charles Dickens (Oliver Twist) - The novel's specifics are as follows:

Title: Oliver Twist

Author: Charles Dickens

Language: English

Having read this twice, I think that Dickens' writing style in Oliver Twist, as in his other works,
is immensely elaborate. Throughout in order to generate a range of feelings and responses from
the reader, he also employs a variety of writing styles in this work. He writes in a caustic tone,
criticising the institutions which imprison the disadvantaged and promote those in power in
Victorian society. The story is set against the background of the New Poor Law of 1834, which
established a system of workhouses for people who could not support for themselves due to
poverty, disease, mental condition, or age. I also observed the narrative voice changing. The
narrators' qualities and moral positions in this story are constantly switching, making it hard to
characterize them." The narrator is disconnected and rambling at times, like in the first
paragraph, where he states abstractly that he will not name the town or workhouse where a
specific "piece of mortality" was born. Simultaneously, he is criticizing the patterns of many
books of his day, which begin with a long and sometimes arrogant description of the main
character's birthplace and family. The novel is filled with dark humor
INTRODUCTION
Through reading their novels, I made an investigation on the writing styles of Indian-English
and British-English authors. Let's learn more about these authors and their methods in this
section.
Here are some of my conclusions:

RK Narayan-
Narayan's writings were characterized by its clarity and slightly comedic style. His shared tales
of common individuals attempting to lead straightforward lifestyles in a changing environment.
The most striking aspect of Narayan's works is how he captures the ordinary behaviors of
individuals going about their daily lives. His paintings are so appealing to the general public.
Additionally, he is sometimes compared to William Faulkner, an English author and Nobel
Prize winner, because both of them created fictional towns in their writings. Narayan builds his
characters in such a way that his readers can identify with them and feel the events that are
happening to them. As a result, his works have a genuine sensibility and unity.
For instance, "Swami and Friends" describes the inquisitive and adventurous nature of teenage
schoolboys. Even though some of his stories are only a few pages long, they often represent
difficult ideas that other authors fail to adequately explain in lengthy novels. It displays his
ability to condense his content very effectively.

Charles Dickens-
Comedy and caricature are prominent features of Charles Dickens' literary style. Another
noteworthy aspect of Dickens' writing is the usage of memorable names for his novels. These
had also supported in the formulation of themes in the tale. English author Charles Dickens
employed realism in his writings such as A Tale of Two Cities. In particular instances
throughout the work, Dickens' realistic writing style revealed and criticized social injustice.
This scenario demonstrates realism since it accurately depicted the social realities. His writing
style was meticulous. Exaggeration in description was employed to convey character qualities.
He was fond of metaphor, simile, and he often repeated words in a sentence to highlight a
phrase.. Dickens likewise utilized imagery in the text to aid with foreshadowing. He frequently d

METHODOLOGIES

I'll give a quick summary of my research methods here.

1st thing is to choose the topic but if you have been already assigned with the project you need to work
on it. We have to follow all the guidelines given by our teacher/mentor. My research topic was “The
writing style of British-English and Indian-English authors is different”.
The second thing you must do is locate resources. Before you begin writing, you must conduct some
research on the topic of your essay. It is essential to gather all of your references and go over them
before beginning with your paper so that you have everything planned out before you start writing. A
range of resources are available to assist you obtain knowledge about your chosen topic. I then read
about the writers whose books were to be read in order to understand about the style of writing of the
two authors.... I then inquired about their books and began reading them. As part of my subject, I chose a
well-known British-English novelist and an Indian English author: and they are Charles Dickens and RK
Narayan. I reread both novels twice to fully comprehend them. I took a few notes while I read, put them
aside, and then I scribbled whatever I thought was important (the author's writing style). Making notes is
usually a good idea. Reading about just two authors was not sufficient, therefore I looked into numerous
other authors as well before coming up with an essay's outcome or conclusion. Finally, I typed it down
with the aid of my notes and whatever I had learned is to be posted here (comparing similarities,
qualities and differences). I created my essay and divided it like this.
RESULT AND DISCUSSION

I investigated the writing styles of Indian-English and British-English authors by reading their
novels. We will learn more about our topic and the study goal through this article.
Here are some examples of comparisons and outcomes. So, basically, I'll be separating out the
differences and similarities amongst them and presenting before you the result.

1) As we read, the first author's (RK Narayan) writing style is noted for its clarity and
comic style. Another author whose literary style is marked by caricature and comedy is
Charles Dicken.
2) RK Narayan’s most striking aspect of Narayan's works is how he captures the ordinary
behaviors of individuals going about their daily lives. English author Charles Dickens
employed realism in his writings such as A Tale of Two Cities. In particular instances
throughout the work, Dickens' realistic writing style revealed and criticized social
injustice.
3) Narayan creates his characters in such a way that his readers may connect with them and
feel the events that occur to them. As a result, his works have a genuine feeling and unity.
On the other hand, another notable characteristic of Dickens' writing is his use of
memorable names for his novels.
4) Even though some of Narayan's stories are only a few pages long, they frequently depict
tough topics that other authors fail to fully express in lengthy novels. It demonstrates his
ability to condense his content quite efficiently. Now, on to Charles Dickens. Exaggeration
in description was used to convey character traits. He was fond of metaphor and simile, and
he frequently repeated words in a sentence to emphasis a phrase.

So now I have created a table given below so that it’s easy to find out the differences and
similarities between these authors and you don’t have to read much.

Charles Dickens RK Narayan

He employed realism in his writings. The most stunning part of his work is how he

He liked literary devices and often used them. He wrote briefly but presents a large idea that
is tough for every author to comprehend.
CONCLUSION

After reading thoroughly on the subject, doing research on the writers, their books, and making
frequent notes before comparing their writing styles I could finally share my conclusions ….
What can I conclude from these observations, then, if we compare the writing styles of RK
Narayan (an Indian-English author) and Charles Dickens (a British-English author),
respectively? Charles Dickens is renowned for his caricature and comedy, and RK Narayan
wrote in a highly clear and humorous style. They both use humor, which is a fairly typical
technique, which brings up a similarity.. The fact that RK Narayan doesn't require a unique
lifestyle for a story, but instead manages to depict common people's behaviour, is what makes
him more well-known. Another aspect of Charles that stands out is how realistic his work was.
In the story, Narayan also employs relatable characters. Dicken, though, favors names that
readers will remember. Even though some of Narayan's short stories are only a few pages long,
they frequently deal with difficult subjects that other authors find difficult to completely explore
in longer novels. It demonstrates his skill to efficiently condense his content. The next author is
Charles Dicken, who loved literary devices and used them into many of his books and novels.

Both authors' writing styles were excellent in my opinion. Here, I could learn a lot about
anything from how to write a research paper to the authors' writing styles. So, certainly, there
are distinctions between the writing styles of any two origins. This is likely due to the fact that
the natives of each origin may prefer a particular writing style since it is more readable and
hence accorded greater respect. When viewed from the perspective of the locals and/or the
famous, each type of writing style is distinct.
