How is brain protected in our body? The skull well protects the human brain. Inside the skull, the brain is covered
by cranial meninges consisting of an outer layer called dura mater, a very thin middle layer called arachnoid and
the inner layer(which is in contact with the brain tissue) called piameter.
21.What is solar energy? List any two solar devices and their functions.
Solar energy is radiant light and heat from the Sun that is harnessed using a range of ever-evolving technologies
such as solar heating, photovoltaics, solar thermal energy
Photovoltaic solar technology, which directly converts sunlight into electricity. using panels made of
semiconductor cells.
Solar thermal technology, which captures the sun's heat.
22.A person can see nearby objects clearly but cannot see distant objects distinctly. Identify the defect of
vision ad mention remedies for this.
myopic eye, the image of a distant object is formed in front of the retina [Fig. 11.2 (b)] and not at the retina
itself. This defect may arise due to (i) excessive curvature of the eye lens, or (ii) elongation of the eyeball. This
defect can be corrected by using a concave lens of suitable power. This is illustrated in Fig. 11.2 (c). A concave
lens of suitable power will bring the image back on to the retina and thus the defect is corrected.

Explain presbyopia.
Presbyopia is the gradual loss of your eyes' ability to focus on nearby objects. It's a natural, often annoying part of
aging. ... You may become aware of presbyopia when you start holding books and newspapers at arm's length to
be able to read them. A basic eye exam can confirm presbyopia
1. Sodium carbonate (washing soda) is used in glass, soap, and paper industries. 3 x 9 = 27
2. It is used in the manufacture of sodium compounds such as Borax.
3. Sodium hydrogen carbonate is also ingredient in antacids. ...
4. It is also used in soda-acid fire extinguishers.
Extraction of less reactive metals: The less reactive metals are extracted by the reduction of their oxides by
heating alone.
Similarly,
Extraction of metals of medium reactivity series : The moderately’ reactive metals are extracted by the
reduction of their oxides with carbon, aluminium, sodium or calcium. The concentrated ores can be converted
into metal oxide by the process of calcination or roasting.
For example : Extraction of Zinc : Zinc is in the middle of the reactivity series. It is found in the form of zinc
blende which is Zinc Oxide. It is first heated in the presence of air to obtain Zinc Oxide. This process can be
shown by following equation:
After that, Zinc Oxide is reduced to obtain pure zinc metal. The reduction is done in the presence of carbon.
This can be shown by following equation:

(c)Large concave mirrors are used to concentrate sunlight to produce heat in solar furnaces.

1. the incident ray, the refracted ray and the normal to the interface of two media at the point of
incidence all lie in the same plane.
2. For the light of a given color and for given pair of media, the ratio of the sine of the angle of incidence
to the sine of the angle of refraction is constant.
Refraction is one of several possible boundary behaviors in which the light wave behaves when it
encounters the new medium or obstacle in the path.
Refraction of light occurs as the light passes across boundary between two media.
Normally, Transmission of the light across boundary between two media is accompanied by change in
speed as well as wavelength of the wave.
In solar cooker, glass sheet is responsible for greenhouse effect because glass sheet in solar cooker is used for
capturing the energy by sun which results in trapping of energy and the energy gets accumulated inside which
increases the increase in temperature resulting in greenhouse effect. It helps in generation of heat which can be
used for various purposes.
Biogas comprises primarily methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) and may have small amounts of hydrogen
sulphide (H2S), moisture and siloxanes.
Coal is the most abundant fossil fuel on the planet, and widely used as the source of energy in thermal power
stations and is a relatively cheap fuel. OR
Ozone (O3) forms a layer in the upper atmosphere. It is very essential for the life on this planet. It shields
the surface of the earth from ultra-violet radiation (UV) coming from sun as these radiations are very
harmful causing skin cancer and cataract in humans. It also does harm to the crops.
The effect of more protons in chlorine than in sodium has the effect of increasing the pull of electrons towards the
nucleus resulting in a smaller radius. This is why sodium has a greater atom size than chlorine.
Silicon is in - between metals and non metals. Silicon has 4 electrons in its outer orbitals which it can donate like a
metal or it can also accept 4 electrons like a non metal. So, it shows both the properties of metals and non metals.
Hence, it is called a metalloid or semi conductor.
Because their valence shells have the capability of gaining electrons, thus they are mostly electronegative
in nature.
Eg→ Cl has7 electrons in its outer most shell and thus it can gain 1 electron to be stable, therefore it is an
electronegative non-metal.

35. [a] Traits acquired during the life time of an individual are not inherited why?
The traits acquired during life time of an individual are not inherited.
The traits acquired during life time of an individual include his unique hair styles, different type of dressing,
consumption of different types of foods, etc. Such traits are not inherited by their progeny it is because these are
the changes which does not have any effect on DNA of the germ cells.
Any change which affects the DNA arrangement of the germ cell may leads to transfer of the mutation to the
progeny cells. The traits acquired by the individual during his life time are practiced by him due to the situation
and the environment in which he/she lives after his birth.
As the traits acquired during life time of an individual does not interfere with the genetic makeup of the DNA of
the germ cells, they are not inherited.
Mendel performed an experiments in which he took a tall plant with round seeds and a short plant with wrinkled-
seeds. In F1, They were all tall and had round seeds. Tallness and round seeds were thus dominant traits. When,
he used these F1 progeny to generate F2 progeny by self-pollination, he found that some F2 progeny were tall
plants with round seeds, and some were short plants with wrinkled seeds. At the same time there tall plants, but
had wrinkled seeds, while others were short, but had round seeds. Thus, Mendel’s experiments show that the
tall/short trait and the round seed/wrinkled seed trait are independently inherited.
Substitution reaction, any of a class of chemical reactions in which an atom, ion, or group of atoms or ions in a
molecule is replaced by another atom, ion, or group. An example is the reaction in which the chlorine atom in the
chloromethane molecule is displaced by the hydroxide ion, forming methanol.
Cleansing Action of Soaps and Detergents. ... In the case of soaps, the carbon chain dissolves in oil and the ionic
end dissolves in water. Thus the soap molecules form structures called micelles. In micelles, one end is towards the
oil droplet and the other end which is the ionic faces outside.
The twinkling of a star is due to atmospheric refraction of starlight. Since the stars are very distant, they
approximate point-sized sources of light. As the path of rays of light coming from the star goes on varying slightly,
the apparent position of the star fluctuates and the amount of starlight entering the eye flickers – the star
sometimes appears brighter, and at some other time, fainter, which is the twinkling effect.
The planets are much closer to the earth, and are thus seen as extended sources. If we consider a planet as a
collection of a large number of point-sized sources of light, the total variation in the amount of light entering our
eye from all the individual point-sized sources will average out to zero, thereby nullifying the twinkling effect.
