Lesson VISUALIZING THE VOLUME OF SOLID
1 FIGURES USING NON-STANDARD UNITS

The lessons on volume start with visualizing volume using non-standard

units. This is developed using objects like marbles, balls, mongo seeds, and
cubes.

What I Need To Know

At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:

 explain the use non-standard units in measuring volume;
 visualize the volume of solid figures using non-standard units and
 appreciate the value of teamwork.

What’s In

Let us have a review of our previous lesson. Solve the following

problems. Write your answers on a sheet of paper.

1. Find the area of the rectangular yard with a length of 16 meters and a
width of 3 meters.

2. What is the perimeter of a triangle whose sides measures 10 cm, 14 cm,

and 15 cm?

3. What is the area of a trapezoid-shaped piece of wood whose bases

measure 128 cm and 92 cm and its height is 40 cm?

2
What’s New
Read the situation carefully then answer the questions that follow.

Miko and Carlo love to do the activities in their

modules together. They were asked to find the volume
of an empty box. First, they filled in the box with
balls. Five balls filled the box. Next, they filled the
box with marbles. Forty-four marbles filled the box.
Then, they filled the box with beans. One hundred
twenty-six beans filled the box. Did Miko and Carlo
get the same number of units for the volume of the
box? Why?

https://tinyurl.com/sj7j8wsn

 What was the task of Miko and Carlo?

 How did they work on their task?
 What good trait did Miko and Carlo show in working their task?
 Have you tried to do a team task?
 What should each member of the team do to accomplish the task?
 Is teamwork important? Why?

What Is It
 What did they do to determine the volume of an empty box?
 Do the boxes have the same size?
 Do the balls, marbles and beans have the same sizes?
 How many balls were there in Box A?
 How many marbles were there in Box B?
 How many beans were there in Box C?
 Did they get the same number of units for the volume of the box? Why?

This is how Miko and Carlo did the activity.

Look at the illustrations below.
Box A Box B Box C

5 balls 44 marbles 126 beans

3
The three boxes have the same size. However, the items used to measure
the content/volume of the box namely the balls, marbles and beans have different
sizes. Balls, marbles, and beans are used as non-standard units for measuring the
volume of the box. Non-standard units can be used to measure volume but they
do not give the same measure of volume for the same container.
REMEMBER:
 Volume is the amount of space a solid figure occupies.
 A solid figure is a three-dimensional shape.
 Non-standard units can be used to measure volume.
 When a non-standard unit used is small, more units are needed to fill a container.
When the non-standard used is bigger, fewer units are needed to fill the container.
 Non-standard units do not give a consistent and accurate measurement of the
volume of a container.

What’s More
Direction: Get 3 match boxes, marbles, pebbles and mongo seeds of the same sizes.
Fully filled the box A with marbles, box B with pebbles and box C with
mongo seeds. Then, answer questions below.

A B C

marbles pebbles mongo seeds

1. Which unit will give the greatest number of volume of the container?
2. Which unit will give the least number of volume of the container?
3. What have you noticed to the number of marbles, pebbles and mongo seeds
placed in the match box? Do they have the same number of units? Why?

What I Need To Remember

 Volume is the amount of space a solid figure occupies.
 A solid figure is a three-dimensional shape.
 Non-standard units can be used to measure volume.
 When a non-standard unit used is small, more units are needed to fill a container.
When the non-standard used is bigger, fewer units are needed to fill the
container.
 Non-standard units do not give a consistent and accurate measurement of the
Shorturl.at/cevJT volume of a container.

Lesson VISUALIZING THE VOLUME OF SOLID
2 FIGURES USING STANDARD UNITS

Using a cubic unit of measurement can help you visualize the volume of
solid figures.

What I Need To Know

 describe a rectangular prism;

 visualize the volume of solid figures using standard units and
 appreciate the value of resourcefulness.

What’s In

Let us see if you can still remember what you have learned in the previous
lesson.

Directions: Read the problems carefully. Write your answer on a sheet

of paper.

1. Two shoe boxes with same size were filled with ping pong balls. Shoe box
A had 20 ping pong balls while shoe box B had 30 ping pong balls.
Compare the volume of shoe box A with the volume of shoe box B? Do
they have the same of number of units? Why?

2. Mike wanted to find out which box, A or B, has the greater volume. He
filled box A with marbles. Then, he transferred the marbles to box B.
After the box B was also fully filled, there were still some marbles left in
box A. Which box has the greater volume?

What’s New
Read the problem below and answer the questions that follow.

Fe loves to recycle things. She has a

transparent rectangular container measuring 10
cm. by 3 cm. by 3 cm. She is curious about the
volume of the container so she measured it. What
is the volume of the container?

 Who loves to recycle things?

 What does Fe have?
 What character trait did Fe exhibit?
 Why is it important to recycle things?

What Is It
 What is the length of the container? Width? Height?
 How will you solve for the volume of the rectangular prism?

Get To Know:

The solid figure below is called rectangular prism. It has length, width,
and height. It is a 3-dimensional figure that has six faces that are rectangles,
twelve edges, and eight vertices. Vertex is the corner of a shape. Edge is a
segment where two faces of a prism meet. Some rectangular prisms have faces
that are shaped like rectangles and squares.

6
You can get the volume of the rectangular prism using the standard units.
Let us study the following solid figures. You can count the cubes to find the
volume of the box.

This is 1 cubic cm. box.

1 cm.
1 cm.
1 cm.
A cubic unit is equal to 1 cubic cm. A cubic centimeter (cm3) is a standard
unit for measuring volume. A cubic meter (m3) is another one.
This is how Fe measured the volume of the container using standard unit.

Solution 1: By filling in the transparent rectangular container with 1-cm cubes

until its brim. Then, count the total number of cubes inside.

transparent rectangular container

The container contains 90 cubes.

Each cube measures 1 cubic cm.
Therefore, its volume is 90 cubic cm.
90 cubes
Volume = 90 cubic units or 90 cm3

Solution 2: By counting the number of rows, columns, and layers. Then,

multiplying the number of rows by the number of columns and by
the number of layers.

row = length column = width layer = height

3 cm = 3 columns

3 cm = 3 layers
10 cm = 10 rows
V = 10 rows x 3 columns x 3 layers
V = 90 cubes
= 90 cubic units or 90 cm3

V=4mx2mx1m B) V salt = 1/4 of the container
V = 8 cubic m (The volume of the tank) C) V salt = V container ÷ V salt
C) V = V tank – V water V = 60 cubic cm. ÷ 1/4 cubic cm.
V = 18 cubic cm. – 8 cubic cm. V = 15 cubic cm.
V = 8 cubic cm. D) V = V container – V salt
60 cubic cm. – 15 cubic cm.
V = 45 cubic cm.
3. No. of pieces cubes = volume of the wooden cube ÷ 8 cm3 cubes
No. of pieces cubes = 1,000 cm3 ÷ 8 cm3 cubes
No. of pieces cubes = 125 pieces
