"EFFECTS OF BODY SHAMING TO THE MENTAL HEALTH OF

STUDENTS" INTRODUCTION
Body shaming is the act of mocking or stigmatizing someone by making negative remarks about their
body's shape, size, or appearance. Body shaming is the humiliation of another person by making
improper or unpleasant statements about their body size or appearance. In addition to "fat shaming,"
you may receive nasty comments if you are underweight or refer to a specific body area also. Body
shaming can be caused by the culture in which a person was raised or comes from. Sometimes they
pick it up from the people around them and believe it to be normal. Body shaming can affect eating
disorders, body dysmorphic disorder, anxiety, and depression in the victim. Even supermodels and
idols have insecurities and flaws, but we nevertheless regard them as the ultimate embodiments of
beauty. If you do not meet these expectations, you may feel insecure and unworthy. If you are
subjected to body shaming by others and take their harsh comments seriously, it can lead to
unhealthy behaviors and mental health issues. BODY OF THE STUDY (BOS): This study aims to
analyze the forms of action that are categorized as body shaming crimes and criminal law
enforcement against body shaming crimes on social media. This study uses normative juridical
approach. The data used is in the form of secondary data consisting of primary and secondary legal
materials. The data collection methods uses literature study and descriptive qualitative analysis. The
result of this studies indicate that, the formsof action that are categorized as body shaming crimes,
namely; the words uttered contain elements of physical insult and have humiliated and lowered one's
self esteem because they can be seen/witnessed by many people, making them feel sad and
depressed. Body shaming is the action or inaction of subjecting someone to humiliation and criticism
for their bodily features. The scope of body shaming is wide, and can include, although is not limited
to fat-shaming, shaming for thinness, small breasts, height-shaming, shaming of hairiness (or lack
thereof), of hair-color, body-shape, one's muscularity (or lack thereof), shaming of penis size or
breast size, shaming of looks (facial features), and in its broadest sense may even include shaming of
tattoos and piercings or diseases that leave a physical mark such as psoriasis.[1] In a study of
children's film and books regarding messages about the importance of appearance, media targeted
toward children were heavily saturated with messages emphasizing attractiveness as an important
part of relationships and interpersonal interaction.[2] Among the movies used in the study, two
Disney movies contained the highest number of messages about personal beauty. This study also
found 64% of the videos studied portrayed obese characters as unattractive, evil, cruel, and
unfriendly, and more than half of the portrayals involved the consideration or consumption of food.
[3] Some forms of body shaming have ancient origins in popular superstition, such as discrimination
against people with red hair and stereotypes of people with blonde hair.[4] Forms of discrimination
may also differ significantly depending on age group. For example, tall preadolescents are sometimes
depicted as awkward and can face derogatory pejorative terms such as "lanky", despite height being a
typically valued characteristic among adults.[1] Sometimes body shaming can extend to a perception
that one does not sufficiently display masculinity or femininity. For example, men with wide hips,
prominent breasts, or lack of facial hair are sometimes shamed for appearing feminine.[5] Similarly,
women can be body shamed for appearing to have a man-bulge,[6] or for having broad shoulders,
physical traits that are typically associated with men.[5] Suicide due to body shaming is the fourth
leading cause of death in 15–19-year-olds. Extensive levels of body shaming can have negative
emotional effects, including lowered self-esteem and the development of issues such as eating
disorders, anxiety, body image disturbance,[7] body dysmorphic disorder and depression.[8] These
depressive effects can worsen especially when people feel their body can not meet social criteria.[9]
Perpetrators of body shaming can be charged under article 315 of the criminal code, with a maximum
imprisonment of four months and two weeks or a maximum fine of four thousand and fige hundred
ruphias. And if it's done on social media, the perpetrators can be charged under article 27 paragraph
(3) jo. Article 45 paragraph (3) of the ITE law with a maximum finr of seven hundred and fifty
million ruphias. The police also offer a settlement process in a non-litigation context, namely by
maximizing penal mediation to reduce the build of cases in court.
There are various instances where people make indirect body-shaming statements, and even though I
believe that we should dig deeper into this topic with any given situation faced by the victims, I think
that the most common scenario is victims receiving backhanded compliments or even direct insults
from their own peers. This experience can badly affect anyone and could lead to anxiety, low self-
esteem, eating disorders, and even depression. We must put more effort and time into studying the
effects of body shame on its victims and how we can help them cope with their situation and have a
lot more body positivity. The locale of the study with regards to the problem that I want to study is at
the school campus, or Camarin High School. As I said earlier, the most common situation that the
victims face is their peers body-shaming them, since body-shaming isn't limited to their homes and
may occur at schools too.

4. How often do students encounter body shamers or how often they get body shame? Is it same
person or not?

5. How do they cope with the feelings of others body shaming them?
