CONSOLIDATION WORK | DOUBLE COMPARATIVES | 10th grade

Task 1 Double comparatives are used to express a cause-and-effect process. Finish the sentences
illustrated in pictures 1 – 15. Follow the example:
1 The harder you study the more tired you feel.
Example sentences:
2 The more money you have the happier you feel.
3 The more you eat the fatter you get.
4 The older we get the more we depend on television. / … the more our eyesight
deteriorates.
5 The more friends we have the better we feel.
6 The more you read the more you want to read. / … the more fascinating reading

7 The more you travel the more different cultures you get to know.
8 The more you train the more tired you become.
9 The happier you are the sillier you act. / … the more you laugh.
10 The more you work the more tiring it becomes.
11 The more beautiful you are the higher your self-esteem.
12 The less you know the more insecure you feel.
13 The more relatives you have the livelier / noisier your family gatherings will be.
14 The wiser we become the more tolerant we feel.
15 The less we worry the more relaxed we will feel.

Task 2 – Answer the questions using a double comparative.

1. What happens when you do sport?


The more sport you do the fitter you will be.
2. What happens when you eat too much?
The more you eat the fatter you get.
3. What happens if you can’t sleep?
The less you sleep the more tired you will feel. / … the harder it will be to focus.
4. What happens when you lie in the sun?
The longer you lie in the sun the bigger the risk of sunburn.
… the faster you will tan. / … the darker your tan will get.

Task 3 – Repeated comparatives describe things that are increasing (getting bigger)
or decreasing (getting smaller).
Example: Maths is becomming more and more difficult.

Fill in the gaps as in the example.


1. He is becoming more and more boring. I can’t listen to him anymore.
2. I didn’t like this book at first, but it’s getting more and more interesting.
3. Claire’s English results are getting worse and worse.
4. The boss will be angry at you. You arrive later and later for work.
