Essential Question: What’s reading comprehension?

Questions/ Vocab, etc. Notes

What is reading? Highly complex interactive process (socio-cognitive view) “of decoding
symbols in order to construct or derive meaning”. Ex: reading comprehension,
text understanding, meaning created by the reader.
It requires mind activity, translation of words to images.

Meaning Construction It’s a process that requires 3 elements and each brings something to the text:
1. Reader: prior experiences, language and literature.
2. Author/Text: ideas, vocabulary, syntax, style and form.
3. Meaning: it’s constructed by the reader with a text in a particular
context.

Reading Process Before reading: preview the text to make a plan, do research of vocabulary, set a
goal.
During reading: Read with a purpose and connect the information using sensory
images. Use comprehension and shape knowledge.
After reading: reread to remember and reflect information.

Elements involved Lexical Process: Meaning (semantics)

Written word: visual analysis, orthographic lexicon, phonological lexicon,
short-term memory
Phonological process: segmentation of analysis. Letter-sound mouthing. Sound
synthesis.
The written word is the start and after the process with all previous elements
mentioned, what comes out is the spoken word.
Meaning construction Strategies for meaning construction: reflecting, asking questions, developing
mental images, checking for understanding, revising, summarizing, previewing,
applying, synthesizing information, taking notes, setting a purpose, evaluating,
reading.

Reading Proficiency Steps to Reading Proficiency

1. Cognitive skills: phonological awareness, processing, attention,
automaticity, working memory.
2. Reading Fluency.
3. Language: Structure, vocabulary, spelling
4. Reading Comprehension.
5. Knowledge: life experiences, content.
6. Reading with Metacognition: process information and how it’s being
processed.

Reading Comprehension Reread text, activate prior knowledge, use context clues, infer meaning, think
Strategies aloud, summarize the story, locate key words, make predictions, use word attack
strategies, visualice, use graphic organizers and evaluate understanding.

Skimming vs Scanning Scanning:

● Search keywords or ideas.
● Look for organizers (numbers, letters, steps, etc.), words that are bold,
italic.

Skimming:
● Identify the main ideas of a text.
● Find dates, names, places, graphs, tables, charts.

Summary: Reading is a complex interactive process of decoding words to construct a meaning. The meaning
construction requires the reading process and comprehension, which can be done easier using strategies before,
during and after reading. The meaning construction can also be done with strategies like reflecting,
summarizing, etc., whatever works for each person. Reading proficiency can be improved to achieve
metacognition while reading. Some strategies for reading comprehension are scanning (search of keywords) and
skimming (identification of main idea).
