“ Yes to Not Normalizing Teenage pregnancy”

Teenage Pregnancy has been an ongoing social topic/issue for decades not just in our country
but globally. Our country the Philippines has the highest rate of teen pregnancy among the ASEAN
nations, recent World Bank data shows that the Philippines has 47 births annually per 1,000 women aged
15-19, higher than the average adolescent birth rates of 44 globally and 33.5 in the ASEAN region,
according to Philippine UNFPA org. Seeing this statistical reports we could claim that the Philippines has
been normalizing, teen pregnancy which we should not. As a teenager myself I believe, we should not
normalize teenage pregnancy to decrease our country's poverty and for the betterment of the Filipino
Youths.

Teenage pregnancy is when a woman under 20 gets pregnant. It usually refers to the teens
between ages of 15-19. But it can include girls as young as 10. There are different cause and reasons for
teen pregnancy which are; lack of information about sexual and reproductive health and rights,
inadequate access to services tailored to young people, family, community , and social pressure to marry,
sexual violence, lack of education or school drop-out, and etc. One of the greatest contributor of the
increase of teen pregnancy rate to our Filipino teen youths is the lack of sexual knowledge. The lack of
sexual knowledge to them led them to think that getting pregnant at an early age is normal because they
don’t know what might be the consequences or neither how to even prevent it. Early pregnancy of these
young women should never be normalize, because it could risk not just the mother’s life but also the child
inside of that womb. Teens are at a higher risk for pregnancy-related high blood pressure (preeclampsia)
and its complications than average age mothers. Risks for the baby include premature birth and low birth
weight. Preeclampsia can also harm the kidneys or even be fatal for the mother or the baby.

Knowing this risks we should never normalize teen pregnancy not just to the Filipino youths but to
all over the world youths. Preventing and overcoming this social issue could be one of the answers to
ending the world's poverty and world hunger.
