Based on the Story of Change: Dabbawala

1. What are the key features of Dabbawalas as a model of food delivery?

 The key features of Dabbawalas as a food delivery model are they carry and
deliver freshly prepared food from the customer's home in a lunch box (Dabba)
and deliver it to offices. Every day, approximately 5,000 people deliver
approximately 200,000 tiffin boxes. Maintain a flat organizational structure to
help keep costs low. Every day, dabbawalas deliver approximately 120 tons of
food. They collect the leftover food and distribute it to those in need. They
deliver food by bicycle, which contributes to a more sustainable city and opens
up opportunities to strengthen local food markets. Furthermore, the Mumbai
suburban railway network is critical to the operation of Dabbawalas, which
provides low-cost delivery.

2.  Think of a hunger situation in your country. What would you propose to the
government by learning from the Dabbawalas example?
 Hunger is prevalent in my country, particularly among street children who lack
shelter and food to meet their basic needs. As a result of my learnings from
Dabbawala’s story, I would like to propose to the government of my country a
project called “Street children free meals and education”, which aims to provide
free meals to all street children while also teaching them basic education. This
project should be funded by the government, and funds may also be raised from
other stakeholders, institutions, local governments, and others who want to
help. It is not only about providing free food to children but also about teaching
them the value of education in changing their lives.

3. Will the Dabbawala system cope with the challenges of a global city in the future?

 Hunger is one of the most serious issues confronting the world today. In my
opinion, the smallest things and simple ways of helping others must be started
to lessen if not eliminate it. That is why the Dabbawala system will be able to
meet the challenges of a global city in the future because a simple way to help
those in need is the most significant contribution to making the world a more
sustainable place to live.

4.  Is the Dabbawala system a key factor for sustainable urban development?

 Yes, the Dabbawala system is a key factor for sustainable urban development
because it provides food to those needy from leftover foods. In addition, the
food is delivered by bicycle and suburban railway, which contributes to a more
sustainable environment. A lunch box system for addressing hunger in the
neighborhood. The model bridges the food gap in the community, where one
vulnerable group of people may be experiencing a food deficit while another
group may be enjoying a surplus of food.
